I liked that Crookshanks discovered before everyone else that Scabbers wasn't all that he seemed to be. Though animals do seem to have an innate ability to tell if a person is good or not. The theory that Crookshanks had originally belonged to the Potters is interesting and that he would have been able to recognize Sirius's and Peter's scents from meeting them before. He could have tried to warn the Potters about Peter's true loyalty but they didn't listen to him.

8 months too late but animals are capable of detecting things we humans can't. Some of them can tell if a person has a kind or evil nature . More than likely, Crooks awas able to tell that the rat was really a transformed and very dangerous wizard. Likewise, he would have seen Sirius as a poor, malnourished, but overall GOOD wizard that needed help. It gets even better if he really was the long lost Potter cat. He'd have known that Peter had brought harm upon his family, and seen Sirius as an old trusted friend of the family.

Your theory is believable about originally belonging to the potters but I think being half kneasle was enough for him to identify suspicious or unsavoury characters like Wormtail. He was probably wary at first of Sirius because he was also an animagus, hence why Sirius had to communicate to him that he was concealing his identity but was a good person. I did feel sorry for how Crookshanks was treated unfairly, nobody was to know that he was hunting a criminal so you can’t blame them for disliking an animal that’s hellbent on killing a supposedly innocent beloved pet.

Crookshanks is half kneazle, as you had pointed out earlier, kneasels know when someone was a bad person. His pursuit of Peter was because he was a kneazle; this can't be counted as evidence that he was Lily Potter's cat. But it doesn't disprove the theory either, and I absolutely love this possibility.

For me, I always thought it was a she for some reasons. One of the reasons is strongly because of a fanfiction I once read called: Crookshanks. Yes, I know it's just a fanfiction but the way Tina,aka the author wrote it just so amazing that I can totally see it happening. In there, Jenna Potter, James' twin sister is Crookshanks. She is also Sirius's love interest. There are so many things cover in her fanfictions that I can't even find some plot holes. I don't know if you have wattpad or read fanfiction but I really recommend her stories.❤️

Take for example Helena Ravenclaw she’s the Ravenclaw house ghost and I’m really sure that witches and wizards have a choice to either live on as ghosts, their animagus form (An Animagus is a witch or wizard who can transform into their animal form anytime they would like) And Regulus black chose to live on as an Animagus, I know cats are usually after rats but crookshanks was after scabbers (Peter pettigrew) a lot and crookshanks was also Sirius blacks friend so crookshanks must have something to do with the black family.

Maybe somehow, crookshanks is lily. Being an unregistered animagus isn’t outside the realm of possibility, seeing who she was married to, and who his friends were. Maybe Voldemort’s killing curse did something, and caused lily to exist as a cat for the rest of her life. Things that would explain: Closeness with Harry Knowing who the dog is Knowing about pettigrew Was Harry with hermione when she got crookshanks?? I’m thinking maybe (s)he jumped at him. My theory leans that peter even though an animagus, pheromones, and body odors of being human first would still be present though probably diminished. So with Croockshanks having been in that menagerie for several years would with ease detect a different scent of a rat that wasn't true to its form.

Not only did Crookshanks live at the Potters. But Dobby's Mother and or Father also lived with the Potters. Hence his Loyalty to Harry. Conflicting with the Malfoy's "ownership" later on. And why he would do anything Harry asked to a point. Why else would he show up....totally unknown wanting to help Harry? Yep. Dobby had ties with the Potters as well that were never really addressed in the series. When Lilly and James were killed. Crookshanks ended up in the shop because he KNEW one day Harry would turn up. And he wanted to be with Harry or in close proximity due to Loyalty to Lilly. Similarly Dobby, or his mother or father. Left jobless after James and Lilly's death. Went looking for work.....finding the Malfoy's.....finding out from Draco (Mostly due to Draco's constant crybabying at home about "Potter this and Potter that".) Finding out that Harry was at school and also knowing that "Bad things were set to happen this year at Hogwarts". Having loyalty to his previous owners but that old ownership not really dissolved due to Harry being alive but being also under the rules of Elves and their new "masters".

as a part Kneazle, Crookshanks is said to be a bit bigger than average cats and he has high intelligence he recognized Sirius as an animagus and knew he was trustworthy, so he secretly allied himself with Sirius and tried to help him get into Gryffindor Tower (he kind of got Neville in trouble big time by stealing the passwords) Crookshanks later tried to protect Sirius from Harry, who didn't yet know the truth and would have done some thing he regretted to Sirius (since Harry had no knowledge of avada kedavra as a third year, the worst he could do was to use some kind of harmful, but not lethal jinx) Crookshanks remained a faithful familiar of Hermione, but he wasn't shown to have joined her when she went horcrux hunting with Harry, I assume Hermione must have sent Crookshanks away to Australia with her memory altered parents and told him to keep them safe
