Don't forget, Luke, if you take suckers off of those tomato plants and put them in some water to grow roots. I find it takes about 5-7 days for that to happen, and you automatically have a plant that is already growing. Then plant them in the ground. Then you won't have to worry about remembering to grow tomato plants from seeds 3-5 weeks before or scurry around to greenhouses to see if any of them are left. I do this successfully every year. :) The nice thing is it's free to do.

I just take cuttings from my current cherry tomatoes, and they have roots in 3 days naturally in the shade of my soon to be cut down cherry tomatoes. Clones grow faster and fruit quicker too. Your vids are great! Keep them coming.

I rooted seversl suckers from my determinate I think Better Boy, tomatoes and they are almost a foot tall and trying to flower. I imagine I'll get at least a few fruits in the fall. The original plants put on 8-10 fruits each all at once.

When I prune my first crop of tomatoes, I usually put some of the shoots which I clip from between the stem and branches in bottles of water and after 4 days, when the roots appear, I plant them in a little plot next to the garden as ready replacements. Works for a second crop as well. BTW: Your Trifecta is great fertilizer! I use at least a little on everything.

We always drop a few Okra seedlings in to grow over top of my second lettuce. Protects them from the heat and produces like crazy right till things cool off. Then chop out the Okra so the lettuce can catch full sun through the rest of fall. ✊🏼

If this is overwhelming a lot of times you can find the local university extension office. Many will have lists on what is ideal to plant based on time of year for your region. Keep in mind your microclimates of course, and there are things you can plant that fall outside that list, but it's a great place for begginers to start.

Now while we all are having to live through this pandemic, and live socially isolated, it is a really great idea to go into that backyard, and plant a beautiful productive large bountiful abundant vegetable garden with plenty of variety to feed the soul and also the eyes. I would even add a flower here or there. Don't forget to let at least two of each variety of plants go to seed, in order to save your own seeds. Plants learn their microclimate and just get better. If obtaining seeds is any problem, take a really good look at your kitchen and cupboards, and see what can grow outside. There actually are quite a few things, if you really look and are creative. So far ive had tremendous success with my first food garden. My beans are almost done, okra just started producing. 1st set of tomatoes still producing but slowing down, 2nd batch is going nuts and tons of maders. Strawberries arnt doing well. Japanese beatle attacks and tiny berries. Sweet potatoes grew like crazy and are taking my yard over. I planted 5 watermelon plants and fertilized them by hand and I have like 20+ melons growing. My raspberries are struggling, deer ate all my squash. Birds getting my blueberries. Blackberries doing great and potatoes are great. My peppers are finally producing as well. I always just grew flowers so this has been alot of work especially for a disabled person but I'm very happy with the outcome and will be following your advice and plant those mentioned in the next few weeks. I'm in GA btw its so humid I hate it lol

I had a rabbit eating my peas in the spring (even dig some of the peas out of the ground literally the day after I planted them), but I laid down some cayenne pepper and crushed garlic around the perimeter of the bed and never had an issue after that!

I love this because every year I have to experiment in my garden even if I dont like the vegie or fruit. This I have 2 beds of mixed items that I wanted to play with. It's the first time I have ever mixed crops in a bed and as soon as I harvest something I replant it with something different. I dislike empty beds so much! I'm even irritated at the lawn this year because I wish it were all garden lol. At 58 I figure I have about 25 more good gardening seasons. Once I thought of it that way I realized there were many permanent things I should get it, one of those were coffee plants so I bought some seeds from Luke. They can 3 months to germinate but mine took only 2. I'm so excited over these little plants and I dont drink coffee! In 5 years when its producing I will probably need it tho lol.

This is my first year gardening, I have very few crops right now. I am supplying three households with garden beans, carrots and Cucumbers. Lol I didnt think any of my seeds would germinate. Last year I had 1 success of like 25 seeds. This time almost all of them germinated. I had some room in my newly cleared front yard so I said may only the best remain! MORTAL KOMBAT!!! Nope there all chillin' pacificists. Sprawling but respecting. I've understood this and tried to say okay you get this area, this vine gets this area with their leaves to prevent overcrowding and disease. Melons are so cool! I've had so many shocks and awe's is that a MELON!!!!!!!!!?????????? Hahah great stuff Fear

Also, if you start seeds every few weeks from late winter into summer, you'll always have something waiting in the wings to fill empty spots. For example I start brassicas every 3 weeks from mid March to end of June. Same with fennel bulbs. That way I always have fresh broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

The ones I planted from nursery plants are looking good but are no where near that big. No matter what happens, gardening is interesting. So many people get scared and don’t try things. You never know if it will work. I planted cabbage seed in a pot last fall. It didn’t come up until December or something. We moved and I put it in the ground in mid April. I now have a small cabbage that I hope will be ready soon. Who knew? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m in TX and am already thinking about what to plant next to replace my determinate tomatoes and what to have ready for when the rest are gone from the frost that is usually late October.

Last year was my first year gardening. Honestly, I was done or done in. I was never so glad to see 32 degrees on the thermometer. This year is different. My plants starts failed terribly so here I am with almost nothing planted. This was good information for me. I found some larger plants of several peppers and a Roma type tomato, 2 eggplants and squash seeds, cuke seeds and I am planting them tomorrow! Better late than never. I do have 80+- days left to grow. Fingers crossed and prayers, I forgot to mention I did have success with a cherry tomato and my tomatillos are jamming. Never use an unproven seed mix! Lesson learned.

I made new plants from suckers so my five plants will be 15 and I will have ripening tomatoes right till frost

Mind sharing your method? I've left suckers till 8 to 10 in then snipped, skirted and planted in another bed. Only 1 out of the 6 made it :(

I put mine in water for a week or so before planting. They have roots, but not so many that they'll damage too easily.

@@danielsavage3405 try root hormone. I dip mine in the root hormone, put it in promix soil in a pot, keep the soil very moist. It wilts for a week and then pops back up looking like a seedling that's been growing for two months.

I have about 27 tomato plants. One of them is a monster cherry taking up over 10 square feet. Super healthy plant. I will take some suckers and hopefully get more of the same for later in the season.

Melissa Gannon Not positive but it might be too late unless you already have the suckers in a pot rooting and ready to plant out. It’s according to what zone you live in probably. I live in 7b, I have some suckers ready to plant and hopefully they’ll do fine - we’ll see.

@@dianetucker2711 im in zone 8b, but that doesnt have much to do with growing veg except for what i can ovetwinter. I can plant a huge variety of perennial plants in my landscape. My winter hardiness is grest. BUT...I have 90-120 days till my first frost. These experiments will go in very large pots and get moved into the greenhouse if necessary.

My tomatoes never fizzle out i grew them over 12ft tall last year cherry and bs and produced from july to October when we we done picking and decided to end it

You can “start” mid-season “seedlings” of tomatoes from your suckers, though, folks. In many (most?) places, those do have time to become a mature plant; especially, if you are focusing on cherry tomato crops. Honestly, though, I have beefsteak variety sucker starts growing in pots and those babies will likely produce this fall.

You can under a shade cloth if you keep the soil mulched and watered.

Put up a pop up dealy, keep them moist, soak them once a week, mulch mulch mulch, im in the desert of southern California and my garden is flourishing! Plant under a large shade tree. Put a thermometer or two around the beds. Throw ice around if the ground is scorching hot.

You can. I have plants growing from seed now. On a patio in Tx in the summer! Depends on what your growing. Just keep them watered and you'll be fine. Just dont over water!

I have some black beans in my living room that I germinated on the June 1st they have sprouted and two of them have just the tiniest of leaves coming in. I don’t know how long they are going to live inside. I did it as an experiment, so to answer your question. Yes. They will grow. We’ll see if they can produce anything or not.

Just a suggestion for clarity. Use the words ‘planting’ and ‘harvest’ after the word ‘season’. Early, late, and mid season planting. Early, late, and mid season harvest. i.e. early season planting for a mid season harvest.

Melissa N. I would think he is saying to plant seeds in pots and then transplant them in the garden when they’re about 4 inches tall. I’ve seen a couple videos made by master gardeners where they say to start them inside where it is cool and transplant them when they’re about 4 inches tall.

I have a pretty short growing season and I’ll be starting mine tomorrow. Get a short season crop. Broccoli and cauliflower are typically cool weather plants. I’m not an expert, this is only my second year gardening, but I do watch and read a lot of gardening videos and books.

At a sad time that has brought so many people into having to think of provide more for themselves, it maybe good for those whom can make some money out of it all but sadly so many of us are getting exploited real bad that it is rather heartbreaking because also they are bewildered in finding they are living in unprecedented times. that are causing panic buying that cause families to go individually to supermarkets to buy then shortages for so many others. This is like wartime but without being able to actually support each other by meeting up and learning of growing tips. So you are more than ever greatly appreciated, keep the good work up.
