Thanks for the 'nudge' I needed Scott, I have been needing to start my fall crops a.s.a.p. I've gardened a bit on a smaller scale before but this is my first 'large scale garden' {at least to me it is large}. When it's super hot outside I procrastinate about getting out there in the sweltering burning heat. My favorite days to garden are cloudy or even lightly rainy ones!

So sorry to bring it up, because this is a great video: like you, I recently harvested my garlics, shallots, and was planning on (& excited about) putting in a few crops that grow well after garlic. BUT, here in California, we're having to let parts of the yard/garden go due to drought. Having to seriously cut back on water usage, so the garlic bed will stay empty for now. Hopes are that the winter might bring more moisture to our dry/struggling lands here. Thanks for your great videos

I am planting carrots and peas in my garlic bed. I just planted buckwheat in my onion bed. A week or 2 after the buckwheat flowers, I will cut it down and cover it so the bed is ready for next spring

Sowing deeper for drying soil is a great idea. My first 'balcony' sweat potatos was a bust but the varied herbs and the plant I found in the hallway are doing relatively well. :)

Just planted my baby tree collard which is the first time trying. I've had them in small pots and they needed to be transplanted. I covered them with tulle to keep the bugs from eating them up....again. Also trying comfrey.

Good advice. In 9b Sacramento I have zucchini and squash going crazy right now but I am also planting cucumber seeds for a later harvest. They do terrific as the weather cools a bit. I pulled out my last tomatoes last year on Dec 23rd. I saved my faves indoor overwinter and had a great crop this summer from last years best tomatoes.Love your videos and your Monday shows.

Great tips, especially about brassicas. I do think that the one plant that is a big challenge to germinate in hot conditions is spinach. It is a very finicky plant, and will best germinate in soil temperatures around 70 degrees. I recommend starting it in the basement (if you have it, or indoors in air conditoning) under grow lights. Then move it outdoors in September when the temperatures have cooled slightly.

You've convinced me! I think I'm in a similar climate. I'm gonna try beets, carrots, spinach, peas and lettuce in one of my 4 x 4' vacant beds (just harvested my garlic). Also sowing some parsley (in pots so I can bring it indoors to over-winter). Thanks for the inspiration. Cheers.

One great tip when sowing seeds is to cover them with a piece of cardboard/plank after the initial watering. Check in a few days later and remove it once the seedlings start to be visable.

In one of his videos I also heard Luke from MIgardener say something about using cardboad to aid in germinating seeds directly sown. That tip always sticks with me. Some great gardeners with great info on youtube, Scott, Luke, Gary, Jess, Charles, Kevin, the list goes on.

Thanks , I will plant late July turnips, Please do a video on how to grow the perfect radishes. A successful gardener here, but my radishes however suck. They r hot, crooked, split, leap out of soil. Many various sizes, ugly results after many years of trying. I wish continuous yield as much as possible!

Great suggestions Scott. What about planting more potatoes? If there's 3 months til 1st frost wouldn't that be enough time for a potatoe crop considering the tubers won't die in a light frost?

I didn’t have very good luck with my order of True Leaf seeds. The Beefsteak seeds turned into a large cherry tomato. Cayenne pepper seeds grew to be banana/bell pepper. Roma tomato starts all stunted and died at 2 inches tall. I had no no problems growing tomato seeds from other companies. 😢

You should look at the seed packet and count back from the theorized frost date. Keep in mind frost dates are based off the Gardeners Gambling Guide. Otherwise known as the farmers almanac. I personally start some seeds indoors if pests will murder them, or it is to cold. Otherwise I sprout them in a shaded outdoor space so I don't have to bother with hardening them off. The only time a person should plant seeds outside in ground, or in a container is if the seeds won't dry out while germinating. Shallow planted seeds can dry out fast especially if they are very small. This is from a seasoned gardener in a drought area of 7b.

Sadly with current weather it's harder to grow viable sprouts before they try bolting. This year I started some that got frosted in the greenhouse in early spring, but they lived. I planted them in ground and they are still just growing leaves. They haven't bolted yet, but I will start some more to be safe. I do know if you let them overwinter in a snow area they will bolt the first chance they get in spring. I sprouted some pak choy and michilli cabbage and they both bolted abnormally fast this year. I got a few radishes before they bolted, or got shredded by earwigs. Aphids are a pain when I grow brassicas. There is nothing more disgusting when picking Brussel Sprouts to find them full of aphids. Growing them into a cool fall is a better idea if you want to avoid heat waves and keep bugs less active. Then again not long ago I got a killing frost in early September. If you have hot areas it can benefit Brassicas by growing them in part shade to keep moisture in the soil and shield them from being baked in mid day. Every year my Garden is a puzzle with a lot of unknown pieces that can be found everyday and no matter what, I have to make them fit.

You missed the BEST summer vegetable called Amaranth. Different varieties of amaranth thrive in the hot and dry summer. Many of them are ready to be harvest in 40 days. You can continue to sow their seeds from early May to end of August here in zone 8. Mizuna is another vegetable that can tolerate a lot of heat and they can be harvested again in 40 to 45 days. Mizuna seeds can be sowed year round cause it is also cold hardy.

Im confused about which things I should direct sow in July for fall and which need to be started indoors in July to plant out ...when do we transplant them outside? It's so hot, I don't want them to bolt or wilt or be eaten by grasshoppers. I'm out here in Ellicott

Look at how long it takes for the plant to grow to harvest. Brussels sprouts may benefit from starting indoors and transplanting when cooler. Spinach and lettuce grow so quickly they are likely to bolt.

It depends on the plant and how long your season is. Plants like brassicas may do better started indoors now and transplanted when temperatures cool.

Scot 1st year gardener here. I have 3 compost bins working away. But I'm accumulating a ton of green from pruning, trimming, pulling lettuce out, etc. I don't know what to do with all of it. I'm already way off on my green to brown ration in my compost bins. Any suggestions. I have plenty of space where I can pile it up but will they turn into browns over time?? Thank You.
