Today I'm talking about 11 vegetables you can plant in late July in zones 5 to 7 and still get a harvest before the fall frost. In this gardening video, I cover the 11 veggies you can plant and then I actually do a little planting in my new Smart Pots. These are some fun fabric pots that Smart Pots was kind enough to provide for me to try out.

I use grow bags too...love 'em...great for potatoes! But potting soil isn't cheap. To save cost you can partially fill the bags with yard waste(twigs/branches/leaves/grass clippings, etc.) and top them off with 6-8" of potting soil. Basically Hügelkultur in a bag. This works for large pots or raised beds as well.

This is great info because I am trying something I haven't heard of anyone in Newfoundland doing. That is mid season planting. I want to start pushing to get rid of those plastic bags that compost comes in though. Garden centers should be pressed to offer those products in bulk. A person can bring reusable containers to get filled.

Just subscribed. Love your instructional method, easy to understand. Also nice to see a mid-season planting video instead of straight into a fall planting. A mid season trick i've been doing is starting an early or dwarf tomato or two the last week of June to plant out in mid or late July expecting a late harvest.

Next time, cut the top of your soil bag open, flip the grow bag upside down and slide it over the soil bag, then flop the soil bag and the grow bag on its side and then flip them over again so the soil will dump out into the now upright grow bag, and pull the plastic bag out as usual. Prevents from having to fight with a collapsing bag. Alternatively, leave the soil bag uncut and drop it into the grow bag, then slice the bottom open after it’s inside the bag and pull the plastic bag off as usual! ;-)

"Mineral tubs" are AWSUM planters, generally free from local farmers. Spade bit holes. Fill 2/3 with manure, leaves, compost pile stuff.... then put your finished compost or garden dirt on top. I've got potatoes in mine, then I'll tip them out and plant garlic. Maybe even later kale and collards on top. Use a hand cart if you must move them full. Or use that spade bit to add rope handles or a pull rope like a muck tub ;)

I'm in 8b, going on my 3rd planting of beans & peas. I got a decent harvest of broad beans before the black flies took them out. 🤬 But I germinated a bunch more indoors, so I'm rolling the dice and going for a 2nd crop. Just harvested garlic, some of which I'll be replanting in a few months for next year's crop. Some of my onions are falling over(almost harvest time), so I'll toss some more carrot seeds in those beds because winter carrots are amazing.

What balanced liquid fertilizer do you recommend?
@seekeroftruth9900
@seekeroftruth9900 11 ай бұрын
you can weed your garden and put them in buckets or somethin and let rain fill them up, cover and allow to ferment and use that water to fertilize. That water steals the nutrients that the weeds stole in the first place....not to mention you if you don't take meds can use urine, diluted of course to fertilize as well. Some plants need acidity you can use coffee ground water. I just put coffee grounds in a bucket and sit below my spigot which has a little drip so conserves that water and makes it usable for my blueberries, raspberries, things like that, that enjoy high acidity nutrient dense soil/water additions. Not to mention using your compost pile soil you can put some of it in water, so, compost tea/worm casting tea whatever you wanna call it, urine, and weed teas will virtually feed your garden for free, just takes a little elbow grease shall we say. Hope this helps. :)

I don't know how any thing going to grow better in a bag with less care and much less water. $7 for soil and added fertilizer , adding cost for water that should not be wasted$ grow bags aren't free to everyone. I'm not for raised beds exception for drainage problems which I'm don't have. Raised bed is mostly sucking in nursery funding and business not for most people trying to save on groceries.
