This is my favorite David Crosby song. Very nice early version. Rest in peace, Croz.

Jack Casady!

Can you believe that this was only a demo??? I remember seeing Jack Casady in SF when he was still playing for Jefferson Airplane. I could only describe his playing as, "soaring." I think he was seriously underrated.

What strikes me about this is that your brother had worked out the harmony part that Graham Nash later embellished upon.

Whoa! That is some bass, alright. Casady is amazing. I like the spare simplicity of this take, too - not overproduced.

Broham, the CS&N album version is absolutely pitiful compared to this demo version! This demo is by far the most emotionally TRUE/deep version I have ever heard, and I have many versions in my collection...thanks!

Love it, a bit of foreshadowing towards the CSN harmonies to come. For me, it's this procession on the bass right here @0:48. Just brilliant all around.

Does anyone know if Jack Wilce played on this version but is uncredited? I listened to intv in which he claimed to have been on this specific version, having previously taught Croz the chords to this mesmerizing song.

I read that this is the version that David wanted to include on the first CSN album but Graham and Stills wanted to contribute their parts. Back then there were no ego conflicts or overuse of coke, so it was rarely a problem for them to come to an agreement on things like collaboration. Most of the added instrumentals and arrangements on the first album's songs were done by Stills and again, there were no conflicts with that. Things changed considerably when they set out to record their second album. The band’s cocaine use didn’t begin to interfere with the music until CSNY’s Déjà Vu. Their drug intake would eventually coarsen their vocal cords and distort the texture of their harmonies. As Nash said. “By the time we got to Déjà Vu and we’d snorted eighty pounds of cocaine, things were a little different.”
@buddysteele762411 ай бұрын
great input thank you. But it should be noted that they were still doing a lot of coke prior to the first albums release. Before Nash even entered the fold, a Crosby Stills number was playing on the radio and they were referred to by the DJ as “The Frozen Noses” also, when the trio were trying to find a management home, they went and auditioned for Apple Records, of Beatles fame, and George Harrison and another exec auditioned them and declined them and the rumor is that Paul McCartney had stopped by and was a little off-put by their amount of cocaine use, as it wasn’t anywhere near as prevalent yet in the UK. Just some anecdotes for ya ✌🏼

Jack Goddamn Cassidy, holy shit. The bass is not his instrument. He is the bass's instrument.

@arthurbludgeon I've found that when one's words manifest from the overflowing of their heart, those who are really listening will hear more than just what was said. It's always nice to share a little bit of kismet over some good music with a fellow seeker who you met while walking down the road, at least in my experience. Especially right now, when I keep waiting to wake up having recovered from the shock of the election, only to find there's still plenty of spiral to tumble down as of yet... well, the value of a warm smile and an earnest handshake is reaching truly lofty heights.
