I was 19 when this album came out. Came from a conservative family & always had short hair but started growing it long in college. Long hair "hippies" were a minority and berated by most of society in the 60's. I constantly had people make fun of me and spit on me & frequently heard "I can't tell if you're a boy or a girl". Minorities, women, gays, hippies were all discriminated against and treated badly by most of society & especially the police. You could go to jail for a long time if caught with just a little marijuana. This album came out right at the time when I was questioning whether it was worth it to keep my hair long. This song provided the inspiration for me to not only keep my hair long, but to devote my life to advocating for anyone who was discriminated against just because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or the way they chose to alter their appearance. It's 55 years later and I still have long hair, I still advocate for those discriminated against, and I still will never give in an inch to fear. So, yeah, this song means a lot to me.

This was the first “record album” where I totally fell in love with the whole thing! Both sides, every song. A hippie masterpiece. I bought it about a year after it’s release. Several songs got a ton of radio play, back when EVERY radio song was Zeppelin, Floyd, Grand Funk, Allman Bros - you get what I mean! Peace

Same here. Every song, every note is perfection, imo. I can't say that about any other album I've heard in the past 55+ years. There's always at least one song where I go, "Eh". Not this one. Every, Single. Track. 🔥🔥🔥

Love the sound of CSN&Y They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. The "Deja Vu" album where Neil Young joined them is great. It has other hit songs such as "Woodstock", "Carry On", "Our House", "Helpless" etc.

I've read that David Crosby objected to the idea of bringing Neil Young in for some of the songs. His thoughts were, we have a good thing here, why take any risks of screwing it up. David was asked if he had ever heard Neil and Stills playing off one another on guitar. David said no, but this song shows exactly why Neil Young was added to the group.

@nukes27 Жыл бұрын
Ahmet Erdugun insisted. Turns out it WAS a bad idea in the long run. Neil doesn't work or play well with others. The whole Country Girl medley is Neil using CSN as backup singers. That being said, I'm glad Ertugun forced this album to happen. It's a masterpiece!

Close. But the two incidents were with Nash, not David. NY went to DC and played a few new original songs to convince him.

I love David Crosby's singing here. There is also a longer version of this song with a lot more guitar and instrumental music at the end which is excellent. And, an early version! which I only discovered recently - a totally different working of the song for both Crosby and Neil YOung's guitar.

This song is a real rocker and maybe David Crosby’s best. The song reflects the feeling of the rebellious youth of the late 1960’s and into the early 1970’s. It was like the 1960’s felt like it didn’t end until about 1973 with the music and environment started to change around the tune of Watergate and winding down of the Vietnam War.The flu that Crosby was probably talking about was his drug habit.

This is one of the few songs CSNY where David Crosby features solo vocals, with the rest of the band joining in on instruments rather than on vocal harmony, as in many of their other song. David wrote the song; in my mind, it's a masterpiece. It captures the extent of the divisiveness in American society, which had turned into violence and hate over someone looking different (long hair), dressing differently, looking different, and believing in freedom differently. Some things never change. We all want to be free. I was 20 in 1970 when this came out, and it's still one of my all-time favorite songs.

The story behind the actual recording is pretty wonderful... after a day of DC not getting it down right (he was a mess, dealing with the death of his girlfriend in a car accident), Stills told Nash to take him out for a burger and home, come back the next day and they'd try again. DC and GN arrived the next day to find that SS had stayed all night, redone it all and played it for them and told DC it was ready for him. DC said he was nearly in tears by the end and said, "I think someone finally helped me find my voice." Stills was always a gifted arranger - in addition to everything else.

Dejavu is Golden. I always envisoned this song being about freedom, born in 73 I missed all that stuff but the way it tells in my head is all those hippies were gettin' shit for having long hair lol. Kinda ridiculous now when you think about it but hey some things never change. I listened to this album a lot when I was a young man, Deja vu the song from the title was the one that stood out for me, can remember some mystics on that one.

Neil was only a full-time member for this album - he was tough to work with. A great album none the less. The following album, marred by infighting and the eventual dissolution, was basically four solo projects with minimal co-operation.

This album was outstanding. The GUITARS flow on and on by these masters of their instruments. In that era...a guy with long flowing hair was not just making a political statement, but he was brave and " cool" and women loved the look. You knew he was deep, proud and sexy all rolled up. I still love a man in long hair. Love this song. 🎵 Love his SCREAM 🗣️ at the end.

"I feel like I owe it to someone" -- a draftee fighting overseas perhaps? Growing your hair long back in the sixties was often taken as an outward sign of protest in opposition to the Vietnam War or at least a show of some affiliation towards the counter-culture peace movement. So cutting your hair short could be taken as breaking a promise to fight for peace. But it could also mean getting drafted and having all your hair shorn at boot camp. Suggesting that the line about getting the flu at Christmas might be code speak for time spent in Canada away from the man holding the scissors. David Crosby, RIP.
