They had the most amazing harmony of any band! Try their Southern Cross...beautiful

This song is about post nuclear war when people from different sides meet each other by riding wooden ships. (the phrase "Who won?") Nobody will win a nuclear war.

Beautiful song about a sad situation. Their harmonies are legendary.

this came out during the Viet Nam war and, in the beginning, they were speculating what a conversation would be like between opposing sides (smiling, a universal concept everyone understands and sharing berries with your opponent to keep you both alive). However, the middle and ending of the song is suggesting that we just "leave them to settle their own problems" and that "they take their sister [their family] somewhere where they can be safe until the dust settles/the war is over, then stating "we'll set a course for home" meaning, leave the country and return to the States.

Can’t miss on Crosby, Stills and Nash “southern Cross”

I am always struck when I haven't heard it for awhile, by the beauty of David Crosby's voice, his the one at the close of the song- "And it's a fair wind, blowing warm from the south over my shoulder..." from the 60's band the Byrds, this band, a solo career, a duo with Graham Nash (The Hollies), I have always listened to his voice, listened for it. He died this past year. He loved the ocean, he loved to sail. There is a beautiful song he wrote, called Wind on the Water, which was either a solo effort on one of his albums or done with Nash, although I think my first choice is correct, I saw him live when it was he and Nash performing. Don't know if you could dig it up, but it'd be a fitting tribute to an amazing musician to play it, it ends with the words, " Wind on the water carry me home." Despite his troubles, or because of them, an amazing musician and singer.

One amonst many of the incredible works by Crosby Stills and Nash (and sometimes Young, such an important influence). I was first listening to this when it came out. I was 11 at the time, in the 6th grade. I still so treasure it to this day, along with the earlier contributions from The Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, and the Hollies, the musical holy triumvirate.

Stephen Stills plays guitar - what a wonderful musician he is. I saw CSNY play Wembley Stadium in London in 1974 (as I remember) and Mr.Stills blew it offstage, even as the rest of the group were merely great. This song wiggles its way into your brain and there is a permanent place in mine for it.

CS&N were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. I had a few of their albums. Loved their harmonies. They have so many great songs such as "Marrakesh Express", "Helplessly Hoping", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Southern Cross" etc. The words of the song "Wooden Ships" depicts the horrors confronting the survivors of a nuclear holocaust in which the two sides have annihilated each other.
@rk41gator10 ай бұрын
But the way the lyrics are written this could apply to being in the middle of any past, present, or future war. I believe the two fighters are deciding to desert the foolishness. "Silver people on the shoreline, let us be'" may simply be either side's enemy soldiers. "we are leaving, you don't need us" and the "fair wind over my shoulder" makes it pretty clear they are out.

Enjoyed your reaction to this, people escaping nuclear fallout and sailing away, I have always loved this song. Jackson Browne wrote the song " For Everyman", as a kind of retort to this, which is a very beautiful song also, "But don't think too badly of one who's left holding sand He's just another dreamer, dreaming 'bout Everyman".

Anti war songs were common in this era. This masterpiece is set in a post-apocalyptic scene as a warning. CSN & sometimes Y made some awesome music. You can't go wrong.

I saw them perform this song a couple of times. The most memorable was in 1983 sitting on the stage at Wembley Arena in London. Was sitting in fold out chairs on the side of the stage about dozen feet from Graham’s piano.

The song illustrates the anti-technology sentiment among young people in the late sixties. The reference to " silver people" is people in radiation suits, and the Wooden Ships are referring to old wind driven ships to escape to a simpler life after a nuclear war.

And it is not the fact that version of CSNY is not good, I remember how I have appreciated their song in 1969/70, but I am agree, the one of JA is fantastic. I hate to compare. It is like, who was the better, SRV or Jimi Hendrix. Independently of anything, personally my God is JJ Cale! This Artist never does others things than create music and songs, for himself and for those who like listening his songs and without regards of the music industry. Sorry for my english, Daniel from the Québec, this part the America, where that spoke French. Vive la belle musique 👋

This song was written by Paul Kantner (Jefferson Starship), David Crosby and Stephen Stills (obviously of CSN). Jefferson Airplane put out a different version of this song a little later than CS&N, slightly different melody and lyrics and quite different sound. It is piano-based (famed Nicky Hopkins), begins with creaking wooden ship sounds, song is heavy on Jack Casady bass and psychedelic guitar lead Jorma Kaukonen. It features all three JA lead vocalists Grace Slick (amazing voice), Paul Kantner (rhythm guitarist), and Marty Balin solo on separate verses and together in harmony for much of the rest. Casady and Kaukonen formed a separate blues-based band Hot Tuna a little while later that still is playing.

Just imagine yourself on a ship in the 15th and 16th century. Landing on strange shores and finding out that you were the bad guys, that the people you met/conquered didn't ask for you to come and want you to leave so they can live a life they enjoyed before you came along. You then understand that you have to plot a different route and leave ...???
@renemokum10 ай бұрын
From that same (debut) album came songs like 'Guinevere' and 'Marakesh Express,' both worthy of a first reaction. They were soon joined by Neil Young and CSN became CSN&Y, and created many great songs. You could start with 'Woodstock' (written by Joni Mitchell), and 'Ohio.' Their album 'Déjà Vu' is a classic with all songs worthy of a review. 'Teach Your Children' and 'Our House' would be good starting points.

Here's a novel idea that may have merit ... the architects who decide to enter a war must feel very strongly about it . Therefore they must be willing to die themselves and should be on the front line since they feel that way .

The nuclear-war / threat-of theme of the song didn't land with me at the time. Duck-and-cover drills were part of my elementary school years, and some in my little circle of friends were nuke-weary enough to wave off the literal meaning of the lyrics as too simple. The more generalized message was to bail on society whatever the reason. Get back to the land. Eat berries and share them. Move to Oregon (or wherever). The theme of that moment in time, for me, was yearning for Utopia. The song reminds me of Jon Krakaur's book, _Into the Wild_ , about an idealistic young guy who was forced, by his own idealism, to confront the consequences of hubris. I've never given up on my ideals, but sequestering myself to a cabin in the woods, or boarding a ship to nowhere, would do nothing but silence my voice.

Actually, Neil Young had nothing to do with this song - he wasn't even in the band when they recorded it (their debut album). As one of their first anti-war tracks, it was actually written during the height of hostilities in Vietnam, originally intended for the band Jefferson Airplane (by Steven Stills and David Crosby with Paul Kantner of JA). They also recorded a version of their own. Most of the confusion about this track (and some others) is because many choose the version on the album "So Far', which is a compilation (including songs from their second album, Deja Vu, with Young). A little research goes a loooong way to avoiding mistakes. Here's a version of this great song, live, from many years later (with the original three in full harmony): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnSlZqeJZrFlodk

Can someone tell me why Crosby’s vocals are cut from THIS and ALL reactions to this song?
@tonyharmon851210 ай бұрын
While this song is the more popular due to it's radio airplay length I believe the definitive version to be by Jefferson Airplane. The song was coauthored by members of both groups. The Jefferson Airplane version also has members of Crosby, Stills and Nash playing on it as well as Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The Dead and JA lived in San Francisco and CSN lived in Ventura Canyon in Los Angeles along with members of about 20 other bands. It was a hothouse of songwriting. They used to walk over to each others homes with ideas and work songs out together. Credit for songs sometimes was gives, sometimes not. In this case it was and while I find the CSN version thoroughly satisfying I think the JA version catches the angst of a postapocalyptic song. The guitar work by Jorma Kaukonen drips musical tears all over the song. If not for its 6:27 length I do believe this would be the version everybody remembers today. Jefferson Airplane - Wooden Ships (Remastered)

Really interesting choice of songs. Not the easiest to follow! Both Steven Stills and Neil Young play guitar. Young broke away from this group to go solo. I think egos got in the way. That happens when you have four stand out artists in one band. Their harmonies are some the best you'll ever hear. Good stuff!
@michaelwalker525710 ай бұрын
You might be trying too hard on the lyrics. Simple, really: two survivors of some big battle. "Who won?" one asks. But they bond over surviving 9(haring the berries, etc.). War. Hope you noticed how beautiful it is. BTW, no Neil Young on this one: just CSN.
