4 days and 390km. No shoulders but lots of deer flies. LOL

Hi! So glad you drop us a comment. I couldn't put the part about your friend's tic toc account since you are kids and I didn't have his parents' permission. You made our day btw. We had fun swimming in your river!

Big adventure for sure! Tried motorcycling from Winnipeg to Nova Scotia end of June. It rained all the way to Thunder Bay. Stopped for the night and decided to turn back. It was cold, wet and miserable. Take my hat off to anyone cycling across Canada. Good luck and safe travels. The highway from the Manitoba/Ontario border sucks. Too much traffic, one way, no shoulder. We need to have a better 4 lane hwy across Canada, all the way! And maybe a proper cycle lane all the way too!

Thanks for commenting on the video. We are happy that we chose to take the southern route (Hwy 11 from Rainy River) as traffic was much lighter. Even now, after 2 full days on Hwy 17, we have no complaints. Shoulders have been good, traffic isn't crazy (maybe we are just used to it), and the payment quality is excellent. BUT, consistent 2m wide shoulders would be amazing...a cycle lane even better!

Some of the most vibrant sunsets I've ever seen up there. Those were some hungry deer flies!

Hey Shelly! Those deer flies were HUGE and FAST! But miraculously they didn't bite much and they left us alone in the campground.

On a motorcycle trip I took your detour through Minnesota to avoid the trans Canada as well. That was in 2005. The border guards were not friendly then either!

Beautiful videos. Gravel, big nah for me. Too bad you missed the best part, KENORA. Winnipeg was so horrible I had lunch an drove on. I drove from Edmonton all the way east in 2019, with my CCM 3 speed on the roof. So I had a lovely ride in Kenora on a hot sunny day. Next day I took the Beaver plane flight for over half an hour, with a family from China. I drove hwy 17 to TB, I still think it's better than the TransCan. But there were even stupider stretches of sand shoulder, almost looked on purpose. The old Fort William museum park by SW Thunder Bay is a must see IMO. >> The year before I did a 3,900 mile loop across BC, then to the NW Oregon coast and back up the I84 to Kennewick, then N to Spokane and Idaho to Cranbrook, Calgary. Only motels. Only problems were heat and damn flat tires starting in Kennewick, then my pumps went lame.

That loop sounds amazing! We are already planning the next one but it may be in Europe or the West coast. Thanks for riding along with us!

Well done! We took a pic with Willy the Walleye too!! HA!! So you went back over to Ontario - awesome! Is that the 17 you’re on? Seems ok! I wish you well with safety and tailwinds (and good skies!).

We rode mostly Hwy 11 from the border into Thunder Bay. It was really nice. Good shoulders, smooth pavement and reasonable traffic.

I took the northern route out of Winnipeg through Beausejour and the swarms... Did you know that Rainy River is the end of Younge St. that starts in Toronto?

Shoulders are the panacea for cyclists and motorists. It’s obvious for cyclists creating a safe zone, but even motorists benefit as it reduces the annoying factor of having to wait to pass. I don’t understand when the city of Ottawa repaves roads why they don’t just extend the pavement to create that shoulder buffer zone. Cost can’t be that much higher and the equipment, material and manpower is already out there. Keep up the great work. BTW, must feel nice to be in short sleeves.

Our home county is adding shoulder every time they redo a section of road...as you say, it is good for everyone and probably extends the life of the road surface.

Manitoba hates cyclists. I never feel safe on the hiways. Too much money spent on diabetes in Manitoba. None left for the roads.

LOL. Maybe Manitoba hates cyclists but Manitobans were super friendly and courteous!
