The cross scissor trip is a takedown performed from the rear clinch or when you have the back of the opponent. It is often used as a mat return in wrestling when you are unable to step and lift and is a superior option to a simple tani otoshi or rear trip.
The more common rear trip ends up with you and your opponent's hips hitting the mat at the same time which gives them an opportunity to initiate a scramble. But the cross scissor trip keeps you on your knees and your hips above the opponents when they land on the mat.
It's worth noting that the tani otoshi is banned in John Danaher's academy due to the risk of injury from uncontrolled falling bodyweight and I think it is possible that the same risks exist in the cross scissor trip.

It looks a lot more controlled than the Tani Otoshis I see from amateur Judokas, a lot of the injuries from Tani Otoshi happen because Tori is falling on top of Uke on the way down - and most people suck at the technique atogether.

Hi Sonny, from a tactical point of view, when would you choose to use the broomstick (also covered in one of your vids) over this or vis versa

Another outstanding job. I was watching old Gracies fighting in the beginning of MMA/ Vale Tudo, and many times when they try the famous Gracie Tani Otoshi from back clinch they got immediatly reversed once they hit the ground. This cross scissor trip is a great substitute in this situations, as you pointed in the video.

Worse yet, you can get easily countered with a Kneebar if your opponent knows his wrestling. You can see this in early UFC style vs style matches where Frank Shamrock (Catch wrestling) Kneebared Jeremy Horn (BJJ) when Horn was going for the traditional bjj leg trip from the back.

@@kallepikku4991 Man, thank you so much. I never saw this fight, and never even crossed my mind to counter this move with a kneebar. Brilliant commentary!!

That looks so much better than the broom stick sweep, nice to have another option for when I don't want to brutalize my partners with suplexes all day :)

haha I guess it is easier on the training partner than a suplex.

@@SonnyBrown No was just wondering if you can call the cross scissor trip "Ura tai otoshi", since the mechanics seems very similar but the grip is the only difference

Is this takedown safe ? In looking for an option to use a takedown from rear bodylock against bigger opponents . I'm a bit worried that it looks like it could tweak the tripping knee? Any tips appreciated
