Crossfire DZ Rig - Tigerstripe Belt Kit!

American here living in the Rocky mountains. Did my time with the light infantry. Some lessons I learned with a belt kit: 1- chest rigs only work for sustainment with a pack. Ditching your pack in an emergency means you lose your sustainment. 2- jungle rigs keep your chest and back exposed and cool, but also keeps your cold weather gear filling lofted which keeps you warmer when you need it. 3- If you really needed to use kit as a citizen warrior, having one piece of kit to grab is exceptional and necessary. Chest rig and battle belt combo is cool, but overall falls short on the “grab and go” concept

Hey Mate! Thanks for the review; you're one of the first who gets the concept behind this rig, seeing how you wore it for 25+ years. Just to answer a few things. First of all marketing guru will be sending pics of our drag handle mod. But for the details: no. 69 thread, nylon bonded, with 6-7 SPI, in a "Z" stitch of at least 3 passes, end to end, across webbing. We drug each other with that up to 250 lbs with full kit. On IFAK, we are making an insert to work with either mag pouch, or a sustainment. Also going to start work on a 4-pouch prototype. Material is 500d and works well under NIR and thermal as well, although we do recommend 3-D scrim in high threat areas. We are listening. Cheers! Diz

I think it's a great bit of kit, and will be perfect with a couple of minor tweaks. I think a four pouch option would be awesome too. Would it be possible for you to make it so you could fit a bowman radio in the outside utility pouches and add mountings below the magazine pouches for a dump pouch like Jayjays does on their webbing, an all other areas yours is better tho?

Suggestion some rings mounted at the bottom of the magazine pouches would be a game changer for comfort. I find those under the pouch dump pouches to be quite bothersome and think it would add a nice touch to the design. For example Jay Jays or Kit Pimp uses this style.

What I see missing in this rig, is the ability to wear a ballistic protector inside the belt. Many larger battle belts have the ability to integrate a soft protective insert, which is crucial in a near-peer conflict where artillery is the main casualty producer. Worn in conjunction with a flak vest or a plate carrier, now that's a nice amount of protection.

Gucci looking bit of kit. I really like wide padded belt, I always found the PLCE belt hard to synch up against my skinny no hips waist and it not just bounce around. Love the pack belt kit combo it does look very comfy.

Good looking bit of kit, as you said very comfortable when loaded up, as all belt needs to be. I totally agree on the lack of dedicated IFAK space, plus there needs to be collar and draw cord on the larger pouch. I think they need to give that some thought. I’ve used Jayjays belt kits in DPM and later on Multicam and they are hard to beat, but this kit looks to be up there at that level of quality. 👍🏻

Again, that was a good honest review of belt kit and how it fits in with the use of systems. I do like the way they have made it possible to integrate the pack with the belt kit and make it a more stable frame when having to move faster than tabbing speed. I like that they do the plain green colour so for those who are not using it in a military capacity but more for the bushcraft types you don't look like you have been put through the local army and navy shop window. I would like to see a comparison between the Jay Jays, Dragon supplies, and dixies corners belt set ups. The one thing for me as a civi now is the price If I buy that here in Australia it is going to cost me over $500aud and that is a big chunk of change and can not justify it when you can get a helikon tex butt pack set up for 200. Texas yank here. I love the thought behind it. You pointed out what i saw as well. I prefer total modularity so the user can change the loadout to fit their needs. I have their dg3 pack in multicam. I love it. As a female i prefer the alice and plce style of kit. Much more boob friendly. By using these 2 styles of kit for hiking i can carry a smaller pack. Much easier on the back! Subbed, btw.

Having grown up playing in the woods wearing M81 and ALICE gear, I much prefer an LBE rig over plate carriers or chest rigs. I had commented on a video from someone else that my GF and I attended a carbine course this summer(June 2024). All the attendees with plate carriers or chest rigs and hydration bladders stripped that stuff off at lunch and ran to their cars for a dry shirt. Many had trouble getting low enough to shoot under some of the barricades and opted to finish the class without the carriers, pulling reloads from their pocket instead. I put together a MOLLE LBE belt kit, though lighter than a DZ rig/PLCE, using an HSGI Sure Grip sleeve and Direct Action Gear Y harness that will fit under a plate carrier if need be. It can comfortably carry 8 magazines(or 6 with a pistol), a 1qt canteen, a larger tear off trauma kit and a radio or GP pouch with room to spare. Being able to keep the weight down low while moving quickly over steep and uneven terrain here in the PA Wilds makes a huge difference. The only downside to my version, and why I'm looking into the DZ rig, is that it isn't quite beefy enough to support a larger ruck sack.

Oddly very similar to the 782 gear ( webbing ) I was issued in the USMC. Except for the belt and pouch designs, layout is very ALICE like taking a hint from the Israeli Ephod webbing...I like it actually, those butt packs are invaluable. Thanks for the extensive review, Tom! That's a really well-thought-through kit!!! The butt-packs and kidney-pouches are gradually returning back in fashion, it seems. Such belt-kit could work much better for bushcraft, day-walks and light overnighters, than a backpack/daysack would. I always found that if you're walking long distances, it's much easier to carry 8-10kg on a padded belt (even without a yoke) than in a backpack/daysack (less strain on traps, and less fatigue); Plus, one retains better mobility, speed, agility and balance. And when you need something, it's within arms reach. The only drawback is that if one would walk with such a kit on public footpaths, one is likely to attract unwanted looks from passerbys and the police.

Great review, Tom! I’ve been putting together a couple of Franken-belt kits lately, with Russian surplus (when it still was available), Polish, British and American parts, but this one seems to have a lot of the features one would need. Agreed on the dedicated IFAK pouch and the collar on the sustainment pouch. That would’ve been frosting on the cake, but looks like it’s useable as is, depending on environment, you might get away with one water bottle, so the other one becomes the IFAK pouch, maybe. Tiger stripe is pretty rad…! I’d probably install a metal Cobra buckle up front. As you know, I spend time in extremely cold places (Yukon), and at certain temperatures the plastic buckles can go….which is another reason why I love that closure system on the pouches, btw. The Yukon would be one place where I would carry one or none water bottle, for example, which would free 2 pouches for IFAK/jetboil, maybe…sometimes it even gets too cold for jetboils here…best regards from north of 64.

My rig is setup just like this. Alice h harness, Alice belt with hsgi tactical padded belt ,Alice m16 pouches without grenade pocket, 2 canteen pouches and a Russian smersh butt pack. I really love tigerstripe camo. In the near future, I will be buying one of these. I love the lbe setup and used it in the army back in the 90s. All good things come full cicle. Thanks for the vid.

That’s a really ingenious pouch closure and I could definitely see it growing on me, especially for the ammo pouches! It might just be my aesthetics but I think the butt pack at the back would be more beneficial with two smaller closures as opposed to the one big one in the centre but that’s just me. It’s nice seeing field kit starting to come out in tiger stripe too and the correct version as well! Great review Tom! 🤙

Yep, there's loads of ways to store/add an IFAK, but not a dedicated pouch per se.

Great review mate. I think you picked up on the pros and cons nicely. I recently had Carters build a Commanders belt kit in green for 1S use and Mike included the snow collar. Only mistake I made was the commanders pouch. I should have had it made in two parts to give an IFAK position and an admin section. I don’t need to tote a full TAMS on the belt. Given Crossfire has made the Ammo pouches MOLLE mounted. You can ditch the right hand pouches and mount a dedicated IFAK pouch like the ITS one or even a Platatac Billy Boy or some other. Including maybe an MBITR. Lots of options

This is the 4th review of the DZ Rig I've seen recently. Apparently it's making a splash - hope the maker can 'keep up' with the orders. DZ was smart to put some adaptability into it by adding the MOLLE pouches - not everybody wants to carry AR15 mags. A bit pricey for me - but all the 'newer' gear is. That's why I still run around with my old gal ALICE. I've added a padded MOLLE waist wrap that the ALICE belt runs through and cut off all the 'meat hooks' on the harness and replaced with 550 cord. I can change MOLLE pouches as needed and it's comfortable as it could be. Over the years I've fiddled with FLCs and LBVs but I keep coming back to the LBE style. I think DZ has started a trend - 'what was old is new again'. 👍

An outstanding and comprehensive review as always sir. You addressed many of my concerns with the DZ rig. In particular how the yoke worked underneath armor. My homebrew belt kit is somewhat similar: 2" webbing suspenders, 2x 3-mag pouches, 2 GP pouches and IFAK. I use a 3day pack for sustainment items. I prefer to have my USGI canteen cup inverted atop the canteen in the GP pouch; that somewhat prevents ingress of debris.

If youre handy with a needle and thread jist stitch loop velcro to the inside of the drag handle and a small patch of hook to the yoke so you can stick the drag handle down flat when not in use. People with their slick plate carriers and three magazines are going to be in for a hell of a shock. Its good crossfire have been taking notice of battlefield trends in conventional war and are tailoring products towards it. I think we'll revert back to something like early GWOT days where guys had mainly soft armour because of explosive threat with belt kit or vest over the top of it.

@PreparedPathfinder yeah I also find interesting how were teaching the Ukrainians conventional tactics when we havent been in a conventional war since WW2 and theyre the most experienced currently. On another note, after studying countless pov videos from them, it seems like theyre using more of an in-between belt system. Lighter than LBE but heavier than a shooters belt which makes sense being that most movements are by vehicle and the trench systems a lot of the time are quite narrow, not to mention urban centers are more common to come across these days. The SORD agile belt with the agile suspenders seems to be the way to go imo. I was mounted infantry in the Australian army for 13 years and i remember dudes who were running webbing always had to take it off to get a full section in the back of an ASLAV or M113. Going off what ive seen seeing a plate carrier with only a tripple shingle, then that agile belt with 2 double m4, large admin pouch at the rear (or med if its not in a dangler) and grenades on the master side seems to be the go

Yeah same thoughts ref teaching the Ukrainians. TBH most of our NCOs below Sgt have virtually no operational experience.

This is based odd the Australian Army Web kit that we were issued in the 2000s. Besides the harness, very similar to issued kit before the body armour/chest rig setup up they issued for Afghanistan. As per some other comments, having another large pouch at the rear would be good, I had the that set up on my issued kit two minimi pouches on the rear between the water bottles. Tight fit, but made it happen. Great video, thanks for a great review.

Great review. Thanks. I would recommend you shorten the grab handle by sewing it with light stitching. Sew it enough to lift the filled kit but not enough to drag your body. Think of it as a fall arrest kit. It rips open during a fall.

Always said the fight light Afghan/recent years thing was a fad for that theatre and vehicle based opps and troops on the ground would return to belt kit as they can live out of it for longer and it suited wider operational environments. Will take a look at this one as a multicam upgrade sounds like a prudent idea. It might be interesting to see what they come up with to store CBRN kit also on this rig, the old roll idea updated to go on top at the back and likewise where does the entrenching tool/folding shovel go?

The belt load out to carry more sustainment is not all that you can carry. The plate carrier cumberbund can obviously carry ammo pouches on sides as well as on front of carrier.

Alright there Tom, hope you had a good Christmas/New year. The Belt kit is a good set up and certainly much better than the old canvas 58 kit, no shrinkage when wet for one, but not keen on the plastic D ring attachment points, a weak point imo, the way the Bergen attaches to the Belt kit is a hoofing idea, nice quick release system. The PLCE Belt kit, slightly modded, still works well for me though and is cheaply replaceable and obtainable. All the best for the coming future and stay sharp 👂🏻👀👂🏻

Agree on non-removable pooches, I'd want three of the large to the rear (Or knowing me I'd put a rocket either side of their middle one.) For the saggy loop, stitch some velcro each side, soft to the top, scritch below and you can then fold down the loop when not required. I thought it'd be 260 so yeah not far off 😂 And tell em I want mine in 95 dpm :-D

I see the belt kit coming back around to the standard or regular Infantry. Just for the ability to self sustain for 24-48 hours. Here in the States, I see this being the go to setup for the prepared citizen as well. The chest rig and battle belt combo will remain in service but for direct action folks. Maybe a blending with the micro rigs and belt kit for the assaulters/breachers, and the like. It will be horrifying yet interesting to see what more gear will be developed for the Peer to Peer conflicts(choppers scare the shit out of this grunt) and the development of drone warfare is now a standard in any military/rebel repertoire.

Good looking webbing. I’ve got a set of JayJays Gen 3 Inf webbing which is great. However, being the most non-flexible bloke in NATO, I always struggle to reach anything after the first ammo pouch, including getting in a faff of putting mags back, which is why I’ll always prefer a chest rig or pouches-on-plate, and placing non-essentials in my daysack. I should probably take up yoga to be fair

Appreciate the review. I found it more informative than the others. In regard to the sustainment/canteen pouches, how do they compare in size to the old PLCE canteen pouches? Is there adequate room for additional small items? Water purification tabs, filter, spork, etc?

Cheers. The waterbottle pouches are slightly smaller than the PLCE ones (which l actually always found a bit too big). You’d probably be able to slip some small or flat items in. Personally l’d just put them in the sustainment pouch though, which is pretty big.

Awesome deep dive into this piece of gear Tom. It looks awesome. You can't be an "operator" if you're not in tiger stripe. Your mods and issue definitely made sense and I second that draw cord cover in the main sustainment pouch. Another thing I'd like to see is a pull forward to tighten belt and probably the same thing on the ruck connectors. More ergonomic. One question for you since you've used this type of belt kit for years. The padded waist strap or the Brits hippo pads, they look like they would hold a lot of heat in. Any problems with that in the warmer times of the year that you have noticed? Want to stay away from that prickly heat. Nate

Yeah l mentioned pull forward straps on the belt in my feedback to the company as it goes. I used a hippo pad for years and never had a problem in the heat.

Sure, it's a pricey pill to swallow in one chunk, but if you build something like this out of a modular belt system, you'll end up spending nearly the same if not more. The price really isn't bad at all

@@PreparedPathfinder for sure. The Velocity Systems Jungle rig is well over $600 if I remember correctly, and this looks VERY similar. I'm curious when they plan to release this rig. Their site just says "coming very soon"

@@ChickenShackIRL they’re planning to release it before the end of the month. The VS rig is more modular, but it doesn’t look anywhere near as sturdy or comfortable as this gear.

All the videos I see of this rig, shows a larger middle rear pouch. I just got mine (m81 woodland) and all three rear pouches are the same size??

Oh, I learned there are two sizes of the rig, and the larger one comes with the larger rear pack, the smaller size the pouches are all the same. I contacted them so I think they may have updated the website to reflect this. Been running this myself past two months and I really like belt kit for patrolling with the guys

The principal advantage of the plastic waist belt buckle is that it is far less likely to turn into pentrative fragments if you re hit by a nearby explosion than with a metal buckle. One can argue of course that if the explosion is close enough to break up your buckel you have worse problems than just a buckle turning into fragments. But explosions are funny things and one never really knows what effect they will have...

I’d say the more practical advantage is that there’s no metal parts to rust in a tropical environment.

Or they could use a stainless steel buckle. 304 may be corrosion resistant enough but 316 stainless would be ideal and for sure wouldn't rust. I haven't tested how a compass reacts to stainless, but it has a low magnetic permeability, so in theory, shouldn't affect your compass. Using plastic does shave a few ounces and cost. They have the addon on their site for $10. A buckle in stainless would would probably run $25-50.

WARBELT is an excellent system in a combat situation. You definitely(!) need to have IFAK. The remaining items are completed based on assigned personal tasks. It is very good to have WARBELT with the ability to install a Ballistic protection package for the belt inside. We have a popular one in Ukraine - M-Tac War Belt Tiger Multicam into which Ballistic protection is inserted. One of the WARBELT configuration options used by the Ukrainian military can be viewed from Alex Saint.

Nixieworks LFR is a wonderful substitute to this. The buttpack has canteen holders sewn into the sides and the wings with Molle for pouches is sewn into the buttpack as well. It’s very light and doesn’t bounce around like Molle only belts with Molle pouches will. It’s awesome and the buttpack is massive. Highly recommend at least checking it out!

I’ve seen videos of it, it looks horrible. The point of fighting order is ammo, water, med kit and a small amount of sustainment, so you can keep mobile. An assault pack carries further kit, there’s no need for that ridiculous butt pack.

I got my rations issued, they’re readily available in the UK. If you’re elsewhere your national version will be available. An air marker panel is for signalling to aircraft. You can buy them online. A Cyalume is a glow stick.

I just got a dz right as my first step into lbe. What Iv finding is what is the appropriate way to fit it to your body? Should the buckle be in line with my belt or more by my bellybutton? Also shoukd the back side be above the butt on the lower back?

It's all down to personal preference and what suits you best. However the belt is designed to sit on your hips, as that is where the weight is carried most effectively.

I'll be fair. I like the idea. But.. I'd LOVE the rig if the entire kit were modular, not just the ends. The fixed pouches they give you are fine, but I can see situations where you may want a different layout in back.

Having three of the pouches sewn on and the ridiculously small butt pack is a no go. Neat kit, but not good enough. Except that the pouch material is usually not the best, I will stick with my old 82 Pattern Canadian webbing.

Won't wearing a different pattern of cam actually draw attention to your outline instead of blending it in, making it look even less like a person? I'm a fan of the layout but the camera is a bit silly. It DOES remind me of 80s American belt gear tho
