I look at The Open these days as an opportunity for the "everyday athlete" to join in and feel like they are part of the CF Games process. It doesn't really mean anything more than a fun thing to do for 95% of those participating. Those who need to be tested, are tested and they move on to the next stage.

Totally agree, that’s why I think it needs to be fun for that 95% (or 75% if you think about the ones that don’t move on to semis) and should be both a fair and fun test of fitness which needs to include a heavy lift in my opinion

For the games, i think they also just need to consider the overall visibility appeal of their sport. I would much rather watch a heavy lifting event, that’s slightly longer but is still exciting to watch, in comparison to a marathon row event that while watching from home feels like I’m watching paint dry. I also think its crazy that they say stuff like this yet they have a handstand event every year that pretty much guarantees ONE person a first place win at every games. Get rid of that

Tooootally agree with you. In fact when I’m home and watching the games we full on sit down for the lifting event like it’s movie night. All the other workouts I’ll have on in the background, get bored and skip till the end 😂 But CrossFit are trying to do SO MUCH at once. They’re holding themselves to a lot of standards I feel. I think they need to prioritise. Do we want the best test of fitness? Or to be “constantly varied”? Mass appeal? An exciting test? Can we do them all at once?

Weightlifting can be a matter of mass moves mass whereas gymnastics still requires a lot of conditioning and fitness..my heartrate goes up tonnes on big sets of gymnastics. A lift is a lift

In the same vein being lighter really helps with gymnastics. And “mass moves mass” doesn’t actually work either because it has to be muscle not just weight and big muscles aren’t necessarily strong muscles. I could lift virtually the same when I was thin. It’s more in the training than the body weight especially when you’re not going for super maximal lifts (like powerlifting) there’s no sense in being stronger than a certain threshold. For instance there’s actually no real point in me being stronger if I want to be better at CrossFit all round.

Weightlifting is highly technical and does take a bunch of skill. This is why it's at the olympics along side gymnastics.

I'm stunned to find that I agree, largely, with Sporty Beth. What's the world coming to?

I’m not really sure why anyone ever thinks my opinions are controversial to be honest 😂 I’m really (intentionally) nuanced. But it might be that a lot of people only see snippets of my videos 👀

yeah I get powerlifters often lack conditioning because their sport doesnt need it. but in the big picture of things, this mindset of invalidating strength is why crossfitters are not taken seriously by the rest of the fitness world. they are seen as cardio bunnies with crappy lifting form and don't wanna lift heavy.
