I didn’t know about this bridge when I took a ferry from HK to Macau. When I thought I was in the middle of the ocean far away from land I saw the bridge in the distance stretching on seemingly forever and I was blown away by the scale.

Actually the key value of this bridge is facilitating freight transactions, it does really reduce the transportation cost between Hong Kong's international port and the west coast of the Pearl River Delta, instead for of convinience of individual travel. In fact, it would be more convinient to take a ferry between two sides for individuals.@@RSCB

Uh, what? I don't know about Europe but the US took 35 years to build the Interstate Highway System which is over 70,000 km of roadways connecting every single state in multiple continuous paths spanning coast to coast, border to border. If it was necessary to build a 55 km bridge in the US, it wouldn't take 20-30 years. It would probably take about the same amount of time as this one. But it would already be built by now. As the new kid on the block, China just likes to show off with hyper-focused spectacle projects that allow it to flex its new economic muscles. Is it cool? Fuck yeah. Is it something only China could pull off? Not at all. It's just something only China would bother doing in the first place.

These technologies being used are old and this bridge isn't the first of its kind. Sure its long, but like most engineering features: it isn't about how great it looks, but how practical and easily maintainable it is in today's society. My guess, all that fake concrete will erode 2X as fast. We will see in time. In the meantime, be aware of emotionally(music in the video) strewn propaganda.

yeah but in this case, it would have actually been factual to call out the political motivation of the project and not call it an "effort to bring China and Hong Kong together for economic growth" because that statement is wrong the main motivation for the project was asserting political might over Hong Kong. Normally I don't really care about the political background but you don't have to go an extra mile and say things that are not exactly the truth to distract from it
@Masood18106 жыл бұрын
@@laenadurlaire4606 anything and everything China does is to exert pressure on its neighbours, other territories - everyone knows that. This channel's objective is to focus on the construction side of it - not the policies - we have enough of other noise makes for that either for TRP or more views or real journalism! (By this I do not endorse China's actions and am against it - infact I have a greater threat from China than you may have as I'm just across the border.) It is a road and it does make travel quicker between the two. To enlighten you a bit, Hong Kong is already a part of China and was well connected already - and the Chinese don't need a road to extend their might over that territory - they have various ways - and have already done that. TheB1M has correctly said that this bridge brings the two places closer and still managed to take the politics out of it and focused on the engineering achievement aspect of it - you know why? Because that's what it does - it's a construction channel, not a geopolitical one. Remember, governments can change, but engineering feats like this will always remain. Piece of advice: learn to live with the dragon, unless you can slay it. Don't be butt-hurt with its strength.

@CS Wong They have POLITICAL WILL - which is why they are coming out on top! The Westerners would cry waste of money if their government did something on this scale!

Idea : if underground tunnel breaks, water can flood the tunnel. 1) outer tunnel wall to check for water breaks. 2) tunnel with emergency water proof doors that close on flood warnings. 3) Above water bridges can have concrete slabs that float on water when it collapses.
