Great Video! I grew up in Oakland, where my father was a painting contractor. He painted most of the bridges in the Bay Area with large painting crews when he first moved there. I loved all the bridges, but the one I loved most was the one that crossed the estuary between Oakland and Alameda. If I was lucky, I was able to see it lift in half for large barges and boats, going to the Port of Oakland from the SF Bay, then set back down again before crossing to Alameda(where I was born…even though my parents lived in Oakland). I also loved the Posey Tube which was a short tunnel that also took you from Oakland to Alameda! It had “style”.

The Golden Gate Bridge across the Golden Gate is San Fracisco's signature landmark as a gateway bridge because the Golden Gate is the gateway of the bay welcoming immigrants from the other side of the Pacific and the bridge welcomes drivers to San Francisco as they pay a toll going south.

Nicely done Kyle! I hate the traffic in the Bay area...but I always enjoy driving over the bridges there! I haven't had the chance to drive over the newest one...the Bay Bridge since they replaced it. Whenever my next trip to the Bay area, I'll definitely want to do that drive as they have turned a sorta ugly bridge into one of the most beautiful in the world! In the past, while visiting family in Sacramento, I'd purposely fly into SFO, OAK or SJC to get a lower airfare, but also to enjoy the drive back to Sacramento and when leaving, back to San Francisco.

SF still needs a bridge to bridge freeway, perhaps a new imagined double deck 101. My grandfather worked on the GG bridge in the 30s. He had these b and w photos taken from the bridge during construction. He crossed the bridge boocoo times after the main suspension cables were spun, and before the roadway was built. One memorable photo was from the top of the Marin tower looking back at the construction of the Bay Br. Amazing photo album.

The vast majority agreed apon definition of what makes you part of the SF Bay Area is if you live within any county that borders the bay waters. So using that definition, the Antioch Bridge is part of the San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Region. It's also part of the FastTrak fast pass system.
@InterstateKyle7 ай бұрын
The Antioch Bridge is clearly in the Delta and is located east of where the two major rivers meet to form Suisun Bay. My definition is based off more geography rather than population statistics which can be very misleading at times.
@Alejandro-vn2si5 ай бұрын
@InterstateKyle But with all your respect, why did you include the richmond-san rafael Bridge and the cartinez bridge when those bridges are located in the San Pablo bay rather than the San Francisco Bay. I think geographically speaking, your argument about not including thr antioch bridge might be off since those two bridges are also not located in the san francisco bay, but they are still part of the nine county san francisco bay area.

The original San Mateo and Dumbarton Bridges were draw bridges. The old San Mateo Bridge was sometime called the oyster shell bridge because a lot of the calcium for the concrete came from the ancient shell middens that lined the East Bay. A length of the west end was left as a public pier. The biggest bridge you didn't cover may be the Hwy280 bridge above Crystal Springs Dam. 250 feet high and a good half mile long.

It is crazy to think that they built the Golden Gate Bridge & the SF-Oakland Bridge in the 1930s, here in Asia, we only have farmlands back in the 1930s.

@@cookingwithkimbap4432 yea lol and if I’m honest, the freeways in California are very bad, driving on the 405 & 5 in LA is like driving a speedboat, it’s not just bad pavement, it’s the whole road is jumping up and down and my car it feels like it’s gonna jump to another lane… and then there’s lack of central barrier like they do in Europe, the on ramp is still way too short (like why can’t they just paint like white line so it takes a bit of the shoulder for maybe an extra 200-300 meters???) I never understand how US got such bad highway infrastructure and design, despite its supposed to be a “car country”
@DriveNRoam2 ай бұрын
@@cookingwithkimbap4432 but to be fair, East Asia has the advantage that many areas are not built up areas originally, and people can build many new stuff (highway/railroad) to the latest standard, in US, many freeways are built over half a century, some even close to one century ago, and many areas surrounding the city are already very much built up, and they are very busy, you can’t just shut it down and upgrade it

Do a video on the Delta bridges and ferries. Some were built by the same engineers that built the Golden Gate Bridge ,they had never built a suspension bridge before and they had to raise all the money there self for the GG bridge. The engineer that did most of the structural design was fired when the bridge was almost done and his name is not listed on the plaque on the south end of the bridge .

The Antioch Bridge is ABSOLUTELY apart of the Bay Area!! It's also the scariest of the bridges. So many people use that bridge to commute into the Bay Area from the delta region. You missed out on driving across that one. I was involved in a bad accident on the Bay Bridge (Oakland Side) before the new span was built. When I went to see a buddy working on it, the marking on the side of the bridge I hit were still there. They actually cut that portion out and let me have it. LOL Great video overall, just know that the Antioch bridge is apart of the Bay Are Bridges.

If I ever went on all of these, Richmond bridge would be the scariest for me. Here are my thoughts on every bridge Dumbarton - Not exciting, long, boring, not a bridge I would be satisfied with. San Mateo - Again, not exciting, VERY long, and only high. Bettr than Dumbarton. SFOB Bridge - Absolutely Majestic. Great suspension bridge, nice lanes, amazing bay area views, wonderful sightings of San Francisco. Glad they made a new eastern span. Golden Gate - Amazing. Sure, no amazing views, but certainly beautiful itself. Wonderful Artwork, famous landmark. Richmond-San Rafael - Long and Very Tall, and VERY old and rusty. Also, the views get blocked. It is a very strange illusion if you look at it, the ramp seems so steep. A.Z. Memorial - This bridge is better with suspension. The views are not as great as anticipated though, and its short. Benicia-Martinez - Very high but not that exciting. Same exact thing as the dumbarton and the san mateo bridges.
@Dunkaroos2487 ай бұрын
Golden gate has tremendous views. If you are headed north you can look to your right and see the entire interior of the bay, angel island, Alcatraz, and tiburon and Sausalito. If you are going south, you obviously get a great view of the city.
@Redrumhamm4 ай бұрын
As someone who lives in the Bay Area, yes the Richmond-San Rafael bridge is absolutely the scariest. The winds feel the strongest on that bridge and lanes are just as narrow as the lanes on the Golden Gate bridge. If i find myself needing to go to Sonoma county then i take a detour on the Benicia-Martinez bridge. If i want to go to Marin County i take the San Mateo bridge and then get on the 101 North to get on the Golden Gate bridge. I've had nightmares as a kid of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge even before ever being on it as weird as it sounds.

The dumbarton bridge is the one I drive on the most, but I was surprised that I have been on every bridge in the video. Fair warning to anyone driving on the dumbarton bridge. I was in this area around the year 2000, and I got to cross the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. I'm glad I got to see these two iconic bridges while I was there. Didn't have time to do any of the others. Plus my mom was with me at the time, and she has anxiety about large bridges so I would have been pushing it had I done more than those two.... Back then, the new cable stay monstrosity side of the Bay Bridge wasn't there and I crossed the truss style bridge that was there before it. Sorry but that new span is like the black sheep of all of these bridges and sticks out like a sore thumb! IMO it's ugly and doesn't fit in.... I understand why it was built (to withstand earthquakes) but surely someone could have come up with a more attractive and classic design. Nothing against cable stay bridges, as some are breathtaking and very beautiful (Sunshine Skyway in Florida and Millau Viaduct in France). Not sure what they could do with that side of the Bay Bridge....maybe paint it a different color to get it to blend in more? I hope we don't end up with something looking like that here in Baltimore when they build a new Francis Scott Key bridge!
