I cross the border between Barrio Planeta and Rivera Hernandez of San Pedro Sula to enter the community of Las Torres. For decades, the MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs have controlled different sectors of Honduras and have been at war. In the most conflictive sectors, someone from a neighborhood ruled by a Mara cannot enter a neighborhood governed by another Mara since the gangs have established "invisible" borders between the neighborhoods. Those who dare cross those borders could pay with their lives.
The war between the gangs of the two huge sectors has been one of the bloodiest in the country's history. The situation is difficult for innocent people, especially those who live on the shores or even inside the borders where they can fall victim to stray bullets.
The Las Torres community in Rivera Hernandez is right on the edge of that invisible border. Due to the lack of a school in their community, each child decides between three options to receive an education: 1.) study in a borrowed building made of rotten wood 2.) cross a four-lane highway (without a pedestrian bridge) to study in another neighborhood 3.) walk from Rivera Hernandez to a school in Barrio Planeta.
I felt for the children when they pointed out to me the streets that they cannot walk and the soccer fields where they cannot go to play. I ran across the four-lane highway to live and understand a reality too dangerous for children. I learned about the dreams of the children (many want to be doctors) who invited me to their favorite park. I was invited into their homes to meet grandmothers and pets. I met the entrepreneurs in the community and tried their food. Despite the harsh situation, the families maintain a fighting spirit and have great hopes for the future.
Thanks to your support, we were able to start building a school in Las Torres. The goal is to raise $35,000 to complete construction.
Thank you @sunsethopper4928 from Japan for accompanying me to Las Torres.
