We are back on the road and visiting the Alberta Badlands, with a specific focus on the ghost town of Wayne. Home of the Last Chance Saloon and historic Rosedeer Hotel, we travel Alberta Highway 10X and cross 11 bridges to reach the location of the former coal mining boom town.

Thank you for doing this video you gave me the opportunity to go back to my childhood home, the memories that came back as going through was something I never would ever ever had the chance, it was my home and the home of the balls family that got destroyed in the fire along with the 2 grain elevators, the blue house on the fire site was built by me my dad and his wife and my uncle the original house is in the picture in the paper that is posted on the video, again thanks for the flash back, it has brought tears to my eyes,,, the good kind

Hey Dan, Pat here from the Toronto area. You nailed another one, lots of fun facts and pics with both phone and drone. I'm glad you fixed your drone, 'cause that birds eye view from 200' makes it even more enjoyable. And flyin' under those bridges.......wowwww, now yer livin' on the wild side!!! Stay safe. the way I see it-- Pat

Wayne is a great place, with so much history and such a scenic location too. I'm sure we could spend many days out there just exploring the hills and the Red Deer River valley and never come close to uncovering it all.

if you continue on railbed to Rosebud there more bridges. Definitely "Bridge country". From Rosebud to Beynon we counted 13 bridges.

When I used to ride motorcycle a lot I loved going into every small town I could. I understand your interest. I used to look for every small brick building on main street because they last the longest and showed what commitment the original people who settled made to the town.
@DanOCan

For sure. So many wood buildings have been lost to fire and/or neglect so the brick buildings are often all that is left.

I still have hope that the railway through here will be brought back at some point as CN still won't sell the land. Perhaps it could be bought and made into a heritage railway or freight traffic could return either by a short line company or by CN
@DanOCan
@DanOCan 3 жыл бұрын
It would make a great tourist line through that scenic valley. Too bad the tracks were removed because that adds such an expense along with the land purchase from.CN.

That was not the original alignment of the road at bridge 4. The old bridge had been removed, the new cement landings were set, and a new, double lane bridge built in its place. The 4th bridge you went over, was a temporary bridge. The company that did the replacement is called alberco. Great video, cheers.

I don't know if it's still held but in the 80's there was an "ice race" on the creek/river between Rosedeer and Rosedale which was basically a demolition derby with a start and finish line.... they had only two rules, 1- no 4 wheel drives, 2- no guns... everything else was fair game...

I too love old railroad bridges, trestles... I usually photograph them, sometimes hike across. One active rail line in Sunny Valley, Oregon, I hiked in, decided to walk across and then measured it. It was quite long, well over 100 feet and over 100 feet to the valley floor. Thankfully, the train didn't make an appearance. Keep up the good work.

Could have been a real “Stand By Me” moment, especially since that famous bridge scene was shot in Oregon. As kids, train tracks were our favourite place to play. There is a small trestle in the Crowsnest Pass where we would cross over it and play on it for ghouls every time we were camped there. Funny how we never were worried about getting hit, likely because we were engaged with our surroundings and not walking along the tracks with ear buds shoved in our head.

Hopefully you had time to stop at the Last Chance Saloon for beer, barbequed steak, and socialization. You can pick the steak and barbeque it yourself (at least you used to be able to do this) on the pet friendly patio. It's an experience you'll not find anywhere else. Included at no extra charge are bullet holes in the saloon wall and a closed off third floor that is supposedly haunted. Fun place!

I didn’t on this trip, but we certainly have before. It is a really great place. It was up for sale a couple years ago and we had serious thoughts about buying it, but decided we weren’t in a position to make it happen. Plus we have no experience running that type of operation.

It was a once a summer 'must visit' for my husband and I and a group of friends for years (we even stayed the weekend several times, taking over the entire 2nd floor). I tried my utmost to get to the haunted 3rd floor but the locked door was not cooperating. The owner during those years was Fred, and was a fabulous host. Yes, it was for sale, on and off, for several of the years we visited. I'm glad Fred finally found buyers...@@DanOCan

I guess I'm historical because I believe I am the last surviving individual to be born in the Wayyne hospital which does not exist now on January 25th-1939. My Dad was a coal miner in Wayne and his picture hangs in the saloon. If you haven't been to Wayne you are missing out on a fun filled place to visit, eat and be entertained.
