As an owner of a Crossland CC1 v2 since ~2014, I've enjoyed my home espresso experience. Having previously owned a La Marzocca GS/2 back in the early 90's, I got spoiled drinking velvety, dark, traditional espresso and I subsequently struggled for years trying to find a compact, countertop, prosumer machine, that enabled me to pull consistent quality and tasty shots at home. Besides liking the size (it doesn't dominate my kitchen counter), it's easy to clean and perform routine maintenance. Having a PID was key to me at the time of purchase; and I've grown accustomed to the simple menu and the degree of control that it provides. My shot quality improved when I added the Crossland Bottomless Portafilter; as well by periodically adjusting brew temperature based on the coffee I'm brewing. Having such a reasonably priced machine, with good aesthetics, and with pre-infusion is awesome! Recently, I began using the Niche Zero grinder along with a WDT - resulting in even better flavors from my home roasted coffee! I've toyed with the idea of upgrading to a LeLit Bianca V3 or a Decent DE1Pro, but after hearing your review of the Bianca and now your review of the CC1, I think I'll stick with the CC1 a little longer. Thanks for all you do to help me elevate my espresso experience!!

I got so excited when I first saw your Short featuring the CC1. My Fiancée and I got one as a hand me down/starter espresso machine about a year ago and have been learning as we go ever since. There’s so little information out there about the CC1, and frankly it took us a while to get comfortable using it. Now we love it!

Another point for CC1 vs Silvia ProX is the screen. The screen that is on the CC1 is way more readable and user friendly and frankly something that should be on the ProX for the price point. The CC1 is kind of in this weird space where it is overlooked because of the price. It is definitely better than Silvia, but with used GCPs and Silvia on the market all the time for cheap, it is easy to overlook this machine. I think it is really CC1 and Profitec Go as single boiler machine sub 1k that i would recommend for out of the box use. Lelit Anna is another option if you don't care about 58mm, but probably take the CC1 over it.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a good point. The second hand market for the Gaggia and Siliva, and even less popular options like Lelits are definitely more widely available. The CC1 definitely strikes me as an out of the box machine, I wouldn’t mess around too much with it, but for the price and what it delivers I was pretty impressed.

I’ve bought two of these machines since 2010ish and they’re both still working well. Given I had to do some major surgery on my 1.0 machine to keep it alive, but couldn’t be happier with how well it has served me. I’m glad you made this video because in my opinion even over 10 years after launching, the CC1 is the best value home espresso machine under $1.5k. Even though you can’t pull a shot and steam at the same time, the separate thermoblock steamer guarantees steam is ready to go without 20 seconds of pulling a shot. And no need to wait for the boiler to cool down before pulling a shot after. steaming. It’s great!

I bought one of these a couple years ago and I agree, the feature set for what you get is pretty great. Having a PID, 58MM Portafilter and separate thermal lock for steam has been a major upgrade from my old breville. That said, there are some quality/fit and finish issues. The machine was delivered to me with a steam wand that was not fully attached. I just had to tighten it down and it’s works perfect for 2 years now but it’s not great that a machine gets delivered with stuff dangling off. Also, my portafilter doesn’t lock in a 6 o,clock. I’ve got to crank it all the way to the right to keep it from leaking and with some aftermarket baskets, it can’t get it locked in at all. Luckily, my 18g vst fits so, it hasn’t really been an issue. I noticed yours locks in straight so hopefully they fixed this. Also, just something I’ve noticed, the flow rate was way faster than my old breville. I didn’t measure it, but I remember being surprised when I saw how much faster water was coming out of the group head. Knowing what I know now about espresso I suspect this is having a negative affect on extraction, and anecdotally I do feel like it’s tough to dial in lighter roasts but you’ve brewed on way more stuff than I have. Don’t get me wrong, I think the machine offers great value, but if your asking why this machine hasn’t sold better, I think it’s because the build quality is kinda cheap and you’ve gotta be willing to make that trade off for the features

The new CC1 ships with silicone brew head gaskets. It can seal well with light pressure. Once brewing has begun there is no moving the portafilter arm. Best to over tighten slightly.

I had a CC1 (technically still do) for about 7 months and recently upgraded to a Decent. I also never used the auto shot stopper even though I fully expected to when I originally bought it. One of the main reasons why I upgraded so soon was because I found it pretty hard to find parts (bottomless portafilter, group gaskets) but I think my entire ownership spanned a migration from G&H Grinding to Pantechnicon design as the distributor. Things would be OOS for months on end. I'm hoping that transition is over because it's really the only thing I would warn prospective buyers of. If I didn't have the budget to upgrade to the Decent, I probably would have stuck with the CC1 for a lot longer and started messing with the OPV to pull it down from the factory ~9 bar to around 6-7.

I bought one of these machines not too long after they made their debut. Loved the simple, straightforward utilitarian feel of it. But could not control the pressure when pulling shots, in order to reduce it from the 13 bar that I seemed to be measuring. The OPV valve was only slightly adjustable, by heading into machine and I making a manual adjustment. So I shopped a replacement, and was not able to come up with a replacement that would fit this machine. For this reason, I sadly said goodbye to it. Maybe this is not an issue currently? I am a fan of Bill Crossland, who graciously responded to an email I sent him shortly after receiving the machine.

I think I just found what I'm looking for. This product seems like the perfect espresso machine for premium entry-level espresso enthusiasts. Yes, it could have benefited from a pressure gauge, but let's get real, nothing's perfect. I will thank you once I'm done convincing myself of buying it.

I've had my CC1 V2 for seven years. I pull a double shot every morning and steam milk for my cappuccino. The thing has never broken or wavered in any way. I haven't even had to replace the grouphead gasket. Just consistent performance. I'm a restless bean buyer, so I'm constantly changing bean varietals and roast levels. I readjust my brew times and temperatures, and have always been able to dial in a great tasting shot. I bought a $38 pressure gauge on Amazon and it reported 10.5 bars of static pressure at the portafilter, which means it is around 9 bars when running a shot, which is perfect. I've never had to adjust the OPV, but it's easily accessible from opening the top of the machine, by literally removing six screws. The machine has never had huge market share because the inventor, Bill Crossland was making these basically in low volumes on the side, as he is an engineer in his real life. He's never put capital into advertising or ramping up major production, and has never sold business to a larger manufacturer. Don't let market-share fool you. This is a machine packed with features that other machines from $1K more do not have. In my opinion, it has the best PID on the market. You can tell an engineer and not a marketing team designed it. I bought it on SCG, which no longer sells it since they sold to an investment group. You can buy them from Pantechnicon Design online now.

Seattle coffee gear use to sale this machine. I considered it for the PID and the 58mm portafilter. I was concerned that the power draw for the thermoblock would trip the 15 amp circuit breaker. I decided on a Lelit Anna with a PID. It took a while to obtain 57mm accessories such as precision baskets. Still this machine is interesting and at the price seems to be a great value.

Yeah I think power draw is one of those things a lot of people don’t think about until you have a machine that blacks out your kitchen. Very interesting review of the Crossland CC1! Being techy, I love the screen and PID /wait time adjustments! Another machine that I believe is in a similar unknown space is the Quick Mill Silvano Evo. At $1200 I can't believe more people are not considering it with all its features. Yeah I am biased as I bought one 3 years ago, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on why the QM also is not very popular with its PID shot timer, brew pressure gauge and adjustment, and fairly powerful thermoblock steam arm. It's interesting now that Pantechnicon is the sole distributor of CC1. I wonder if that changes the problems of the past. The way that I look at the CC1 is like a single boiler Breville dual boiler. While this machine seems to be capable, I can't but feel like the design of the front panel screams that late 90s, early 2000s aesthetic to it, and not one that has aged well. From the fonts, to the basic LCD screen. Maybe a second gen CC1 could fix that. Perhaps a nice OLED screen.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Well this is the second gen. I’m not sure aesthetics have changed much between V1 and V2. But personally I don’t find it’s design any more or less appealing than the Silvia. I think a lot of machines in this price point we’re designed by folks aiming for that classic, boxy look. The screen isn’t great, but I’ve seen worse, I mean, it’s 4x the size of the one on my GS3 haha.

great review @spromethius, a few things I'm wondering. I bought a used Breville Dual Boiler, unmodded and have been using for a year+. is that a better machine for pure espresso than this? I find the design of the crossland quite garish, but the price is appealing. Love to know the footprint size more specifically and how you found the build quality and accessory quality (portafilter, filter basket, etc). The typos hopefully are fixed. Do you think there are IMS shower screen compatible replacements? Does the machine come stock with a bottomless portafilter? I'd love to see you review the ECM Puristika and Breville Dual Boiler (which I have). I quite enjoy the thoroughness of your videos.

Hi Spro. This is a neat machine! I wanted to ask you when talking about steaming power, you said it is better than the GCP. Where you referring to the normal use of the steam or the “don’t wait for the light to go on and start steaming after 20sec” GCP use of the steaming? Very curious about it

That was ALMOST my first real espresso machine, funny I hadn't thought about this one in a while but just the other day I mentioned it to a friend. It was pretty big I think in the 'underground' espresso scene back in the day thanks to it's more advanced / unique tech at the time. I knew about it, and didn't even know or care who the guy was, or what La Marzocco was actually lol. I'm not sure the internet/ coffee community was quite as big back then. As a Newb, I thought it was very important that my espresso machine could STEAM AND BREW at the SAME TIME! So I ended up with a QuickMill Silvano which was I think about the same price at the time. However, in the last 15-20 years of doing espresso I've probably actually steamed and brewed at the same time like 3x! :D It's better to focus on one thing at a time, unless you have something automated that stops at the desired weight output, AND you have everything dialed in nicely with a single coffee, so it's all set up and consistent, then brew&steam feature would be more useful. Ironically the Decent brand machine fits that description, and can do pretty much anything except brew and steam at the same time. The benefit of having the ability to do both at the same time means you don't have to wait switching between one or the other so that's still a good feature / benefit (the Decent can switch pretty quick at least). I don't think the Crossland was ever really marketed (maybe not mass produced?) and not available at traditional espresso machine shops, I think ChrisCoffee in the states sold them if I'm recalling that correctly.

The thing I have become most obsessed with is just have volumetics and preinfusion. Both of these features are hard to come by, specially when most machines come with an E61 brew head. Ascaso seams to have there line-up just using thermalcoils and all the machines come with programabel buttons. Wish there were more options out there

You should find yourself a second hand Breville duel boiler, it's a very capable machine, and can be had for much cheaper second hand than many of the other home espresso options.

@@wackywixted I actually own a Breville Barist Pro that I bought from a refurbishing center. They make good machines but no OPV on the dual boiler. Moreover dual boiler and heat exchanger seem quiet wasteful in terms of energy consumption. Heating up the entire system just for a few espressos a day is a bit ridiculous. That is why I like the idea of using a thermoblock with a PID.

@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
I think a better question would be how accurate do you expect a $700 espresso machine PID to be? Yeah, no gauge, which isn’t ideal, but isn’t uncommon for relatively inexpensive home machines. And yes, it does have the ability to swap from F to C.
@giuseppecesarano108
@giuseppecesarano108 Жыл бұрын
@@Sprometheus I don't really know what you mean for "accurate" but a PID system is not that hard to realize and implement specially if we're only taking into consideration the boiler temperature. A precise temperature sensor costs cents and micro-controllers on big scale don't even reach $1, the concept itself is really basic to implement. If I'm being honest, the coffee industry kinda milks PID controlled machines for the simple fact that the user is willing to pay more. Controlling the water temperature at the exit is a LOT harder tho.

James Hoffmann did an overview of Starbucks (Milan, Italy) olive oil & steamed milk Oleato espresso drink. I use the new Crosland CC1 as my workhorse to make this drink. They have many varieties of this formula. I use what I know, good beans, half & half, very good Italian EVOO. Nothing sweet like oat milk, just plain steamed milk which is plenty sweet. Fabulous smooth drink!!!!! I learned espresso making on the CC1 and am very happy to be center staging it again. Fabulous machine.

Does the brew boiler auto-fill or do you have to make sure it's filled? If the former, that's certainly a good thing given the whole thing with SBDUs where you can nuke the heating element from leaving it in steam mode by accident.

I know it shouldn't matter, but I personally am not a fan of the CC1's design language. Weird mix of font styles, printed labels, and (subjectively) cheap-looking buttons makes the design look dated to me. And although looks matter less than how well it performs, it's still an appliance that will be sitting on my kitchen counter every day. Given the feature set, if they can address some of the aesthetics I think they could really stomp the competition.

Why exactly is it a bad thing in this case? Normally a single boiler has some disadvantages, because you're using the same boiler at different temperatures for steam and brew, which leads to trickier temperature control on your brew, but here you have a dedicated brew boiler and something else is used for the steam. The only disadvantage is that you can't use both at the same time, which, at least for me, is not a big deal.
@chrisquin9

@@scviper I think it’s just personal preference. When I see all that water shooting out the steam wand my impressions of quality steam aren’t really there. That and back to back shot consistent temps. That’s just my preference is to have those things.

It’s been around for what seems like forever. My guess as to why it never really caught on. They should have hired a better industrial designer.
