Taking his last 2 dollars is very symbolic. The devil takes everything from you that he possibly can, even your bottom dollar, leave you destitute with nothing and vanish with it like he was never there. In the end you end up soulless with nothing, the devil drains every bit of life from you.

charlesbodie4557 . . . he sure did. But, they all played their parts impeccably. I think the guy who played Legba stole the show; he was both convincingly charismatic and terrifying at the same time. This film is a bit of a masterpiece, imo, and gets better with age. The climax of the guitar duel is just the icing on the cake. Steve Vai & Ry Cooder battling it out -- what could be better? Originally the script was written so that you didn't know if he was dealing with the devil or not, it would be up to the viewer to decide. There is a leftover fragment from the original script in this scene, he tells him he'll be taught every Saturday how to play instead of just granting him his wish, that way at the end you would still have doubt that he actually sold his soul or not. And the finale was to take place in an old warehouse, they weren't transported to hell originally...

I love the mystique of this old tale of selling your soul to master the blues. But as I got older, I always wondered "how" the devil taught him the blues. I highly doubt it was like my generation of finding a music teacher and paying him 20 dollars an hour to learn how to play scales and other people's songs when I was a kid. The irritation on my guitar teachers face as I fumbled on my guitar, hit the wrong note, and played the shit repetitively. Lol
@Movierebel3 Жыл бұрын
I remember when I lived in Mississippi, I was told that Robert Johnson gave the Devil his guitar, and the Devil tuned it. And once he did that, Robert could play anything on it. So, it wasn't even about giving the victim the talent -- it was the guitar itself that was enchanted.
@edwardreese97610 ай бұрын
Not to get "too deep" or "spiritual" with it... But the most likely answer is the person being possessed either constantly or when it's time to play. Musicians, actors and sports figures are typically idolized by "common" people. Evil spirits and fallen angels crave worship and to be made known into the physical realm. This is one way to do so. Remember Jesus said, What does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul? The devil tempted Jesus the same...bow to him and receive all the kingdoms of the world.
@BrookeMichaela13 жыл бұрын
Papa Legba does not serve in this devilish manner that Hollywood portrays. He determines who comes and goes in this life. He can appear as an old man or a young boy. He is also who you pray to if you want opportunities. He is the door opener. He can open doors to new beginnings (new job, new relationship, etc). He can be labeled as the “trickster” but I would like to see it more as “be cautious and careful what you wish for” because you will get it.

Legba's got absolutely nothing to do with abrahamic religion's concept of a devil. Legba is a road opener, you go through him to get to the other Lwa. He's a friend not an adversary which is what the actual translation of Satan means. And he certainly doesn't take souls. He can be a trickster. but never in a negative way. There is always a lesson he wishes to teach you about the choices you make. he's all about possibilities. He's closer to Ganesh than any devil.

+mochawitch In this movie, Legba's just another name for Satanas (el diablo). Which is why he had no problem whatsoever changing his name to "Old Scratch" later on. Shinobi Vega I'll have to check it out as I'm a sucker for old acoustic blues, as it often makes reference to Afro-american Root magic traditions and practices, such as Hoodoo, which is the distant cousin to the Religion Voudou among others. Bible verse is used in Hoodoo, but they're not followers. They see it more like a book of magic.

You can't sell your soul, it's mainly a figure of speech.. All souls belong to the Most High.. Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

I know it's about control, I was simply stating what I would have told him as my reaction would be I just signed over my soul but that doesn't come with control as I figure if I'm going to hell and so is he then I can be a smart ass towards him and make his life hellish while he's still on earth. In other words, I'm gonna cook in the fires for eternity with them as my tormentors then I may as well torment them while I'm still alive.

On an episode of the Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" a voodoo priestess in New Orleans summons "Legba". And no sooner does she do that, the wind starts blowing through the tree branches just above her and the crew. Don't know if it was staged or scripted... but it was creepy as hell.
