I always imagined that more radioactivity would be released from an underwater test, considering the fact that the water vapor most likely carries the radioactive particles better than dust or air itself. That wall of condensed water vapor is truly terrifying when you think about it.

It's the same amount of radioactivity, but it doesn't get carried into a mushroom cloud into the upper atmosphere. It immediately comes crashing back down and then gets diluted pretty fast in the ocean after that. Locally the radiation is a lot worse, but it beats the shit out of a radioactive cloud that will travel half the world depositing its fallout everywhere. But I still wouldn't want to live there or eat anything produced in the area, as it's still heavily contaminated 70 years afterwards.

Not true. The water column rose up to about 2 km before collapsing more or less completely back into the lagoon. The steam created condensed quickly and also returned to the lagoon waters. On land, the mushroom cloud can rise thousands of feet into the air, high enough to reach the jet stream.

This is my wife's favourite test; the fact she has one at all something of an indictment of living with me! It is *lovely* though. The detail also is massively interesting. For instance I have always read that the real contamination came from the low-level 'mist' that surged from around the very lowest stalk of the mushroom cloud. However I have never really seen it before properly. In this clip it is clear as day... Amazing. I cannot *wait* to see what Castle Romeo looks like in real 1080p!!!

The backstory of this test: The reason it was called *Operation Crossroads* was because they wanted to test just how vulnerable Navy ships would be to a nuclear attack. This was long before the use of atomic weapons meant nuclear armageddon, and radiation was still not very well understood. To the military of the time, they were just much bigger bombs, so their limited use in a future conflict seemed inevitable. The 'crossroads' the military was at was whether the Navy or the soon-to-exist U.S. Air Force was going to be the major war player of the future. There were still no nuclear missiles or submarines, just bombers. So the Air Force wanted everyone to believe they were the future, and that warships were now a thing of the past. Especially if they showed that an entire carrier task group could be wiped out with just a single atomic bomb. The results were mixed. Although the Air Force thought that the test proved exactly that, the civilian and military leadership knew better. The delivery by huge Air Force bombers was cumbersome and slow. And everyone knew that, eventually, bomber squadrons themselves would be highly vulnerable to nuclear attack, both in the air and on the ground. Something this test _did_ show was how much everyone had underestimated the seriousness of radioactive contamination. They really thought that the more lightly damaged ships could have been decontaminated easily by literally just having the crews swab the decks with chemicals. They actually had sailors do this expecting it to work. When the superiors were told by the scientists how heavily radioactive those ships remained, they pulled the cleanup crews off all the ships. And they recommended canceling the third 'Charlie' test. The fear of this conjured up images of a horrible future where hundreds of naval 'ghost ships' littered the world's oceans, still floating but with crews long dead from invisible radiation..

一見観たら凄い爆発のように見えますが、都市を全滅させるほどではないように見えます。2:00～2:01（オレンジ色の爆破部分）をよく見たら、広範囲の爆破ではないように見えますよね。周囲は海水なので、地上の映像のように広範囲で燃え広がらないというのはわかるんですけど・・・。実際、爆発しているのはかなりの小範囲。空母にしてもそうですが、損傷が極端すぎるのは何故なんでしょうね。殆んどの船が沈んでいないのは何故なんですか？沈んだのは空母一隻だけ？損傷が他の船に比べて極端すぎる。爆発が花火職人技に見えます。映像はCG技術とかもあったりするので、余計に何がなんだかわからなくなりますよね。この映像がCGではなかったとしても、観た感じは花火職人技のような感じに見えます。広がり方が花火に似ている。煙の花火版みたいな・・・。

At 1:11 you can briefly see a vertical dark shape running up the right side of the mushroom cloud's "stalk". That is actually a ship that had been flipped on its end by the force of the explosion.

It was the USS Arkansas - “The Arkansas was the closest ship to the blast and was lifted upwards by the rising water column. At 562 feet long (more than three times as long as the water is deep) and weighing 27,000 tonnes, the Arkansas was bow-pinned to the seafloor and toppled backward into the water curtain of the spray column.”
