Back around 1973, my family lived across a little used highway here in Idaho, where 5 bison were kept...there was a slight hill our house sat on with the front of the house facing that pasture. In the back of the house where our car and truck were parked in a dirt area...it bordered a small pasture where every year 2 beef cows were kept...the cows were shot and slaughtered in the pasture by a local mobile butcher truck. It was really easy to see the different personalities between domesticated cattle and bison. I had a smallish dog about 25 pounds, that upon rare occasion thought it would be fun to challenge the cows. She would go out into the cow pasture and bark at the cows...who would promptly turn and run....I was about 10 years old at the time...and would rush right up and over the fence to get her...afraid if the neighbors who owned the cows saw her, they would shoot her... I had no fear of the cows. However, sometimes she would cross the road and try to pull that 'standing in front of the bison and barking' stuff... and they will just lower their heads and start to paw a grave in the soil for my dog, who was stupidly unaware of the deadly 'game' she was playing with those animals. I would not go into the bison pasture...and would just cry, and try to get my dog to come to me...which she would after a minute...but she would so just turn her back on those bison to do so, not realizing they were inclined to follow her....I always worried one would just decide to run her down and trample her. One year, my sister and I was walking from town, to our home and one of the bison was out on the highway....fortunately, we were near the base of that little hill when we heard a galloping sound behinds us. We turned to see one of the bison coming after us and we screamed and ran up that slope and over the plank fencing we had in the front of our house. My sister was over first and had dropped and I was swinging my leg over when that bison hit the fence with it's head just below my other leg. I thought the whole fence was going to come down. My sister called the man who owned the bison and we watched as he tried to round them up...2 of them got out. One of them rammed his pick up truck door...dented the heck out of it...but he finally got them back through the hole in the fencing. It was nice to see in this video that bison can be gentled a bit with contact....but I actually winced when I saw that nice pickup truck and those bison get close to it...the truck I saw in 1973 was much worse for wear after that little round up.

There was a photo in the NYT of a dairy farmer with some of his cows which had reached the end of their milk-producing years. Rather than sell them, he allowed them to retire and graze and he stood among them with no trepidation on the part of the cows; they knew. Another photo in a different publication of a gentleman farmer with his stock had all the animals crowded into a corner of the area away from him. The one photo of the dairy guy was nice, but contrasted with the other photo was really striking.

Great footage of the Bison attacking the Bale of hay. You caught Eleanor just as she was falling on her side near the ground. It's funny for her to get so pumped up to run at the bale. She always seem so docile on the videos. Nice that you got the footage of the bull horning the bale. The two new calves are looking great and they look the same color as the mothers now.

Loved watching the bison playing with the bale. Reminds me of our pigs when the winter litters are in the barn. When we clean their stalls, we can distribute fresh straw, or we can throw the flakes in intact and watch the sows have fun tearing up the flakes and carrying straw around in their mouths to busily make their nests wherever they want them.

Nancy Litton A bison bull can get up to one ton and are so strong, that they literally can toss another bull over a six foot fence with no problem. I know this from personal experience. One of the coolest things about bison bulls, is that that during mating season, they make a very low sound that sounds exactly like a lion roaring and on a still day or night you can hear it a long ways away.

Everything is a play thing. 55 gallon drum of fuel, hay bale, stack of concrete blocks, pickups, etc. You'd never believe all the things I've had to drag out of the woods. Give bison a hay bale ring and they'll scrap it within an hour. Trust me, I have a really good feeling about this.

My Bison used to DANCE when I would put out the 1500lb roll of Alfalfa!!! They would wear the alfalfa a like a crown of glory on their head, they're so animated! Does your whole herd suddenly decide to do the PE-PE La Pew bouncy dance for 5-15 minutes as mine did? They'd bounce all over sometimes as high as possible 7-9 ft just outta the blue! They'd all start talking to each other (snorting/grunting), then BOOM, they're off and I'm on my knees about wetting myself laughing as they blaze err bounce trails around the 55 acres and disappear into the thick woods and reappear on another side; still bouncing! As in your video, I see you bull is very animated as well as mine at Dancing Buffalo Ranch. Thanks for sharing the video, really miss raising bison, if you need help I have RV and looking to get back into the industry. Have many talents... Working with bison...Ahhh those were the days!!!

I enjoy the editing you do on these videos so we don’t miss things that are going on in the background plus you add the bisons’ names!!

We use that mesh here (Ireland) too and I've found that a SHARP box cutter blade and a SINGLE cut ensures there are no wayward strands... slashing away with a blunt blade is guaranteed to create strands of mesh ... 🙄🤨 😎👍☘🍺

You are correct! Been down that road before. You gotta get it all too. Thank you for the comment and good to hear from someone that far away! I have always wanted to go to Ireland...I'm gonna make it over there someday!

We used to feed hay all year long but now we have no hay left. Our hay fields have been under water all summer. The green grass is good but it gives the cows the runs if that's all they eat. So we feed hay to help them get more weight.
