Big Joe is a magnificent beast! I've seen pictures of the early days in the mid-west getting trains across the Great Plains, with riflemen on the cow-catcher (?) clearing a path through the bison herds. I was quite young and the images blew my mind. Different times, eh? Thank goodness for bison ranchers...

I've been waiting for your version ever since Daniel's came out. Um, you left something out: you left Dunbar's escape out, and him breaking your head gate off. And the bison that almost climbed out. Your followers would love seeing that. If you don't watch Arms Family Homestead already, go there to see another version of the bison being worked.

Just watching you try to corral the two ladies, I remembered a clip, watching the game wardens trying to round up a few bison. They were in a truck, with crash bars all around. We couldn't believe that the bison would butt the truck, and gave the wardens quite the jolt. I see Dunbar knock the gates off, imagine what he could do to your little vehicle. Best of luck.

Those who don't like Hotshots, what you need to understand is that sometimes they are needed for safety of the handler and the animal. They are not that bad for a zap (I know I have been hit by one a few times) just a encouragement to move in the direction needed instead of risking a animal falling and being trampled by other animals or a person getting injured.
@JeannetteShoreland3 жыл бұрын
Hot shot! You mean when Dusty says he gives them a 'poke', he is actually tasing those bison. If the hotshot isn't so bad how come the bad guys on Cops fall down screaming and hollerin' for their mothers when they get tased.

Maybe you can get Big Joe into the tub again and then let him relax there for a few. Then coax him into the chute with the cubes instead of pressure. Hey, it sometimes works with stubborn horses, so maybe it would work for your situation.

If I can make a suggestion that u might want to try while working Big Joe since he hangs up and won't move forward try using a steel bar that is longer than width of shute/run u can move the bar up slowly as the animal moves forward we've had to do this when working stubborn bulls (cattle) not buffalo.

In my option I think y’all are doing a great job. I thought of a way to get Big Joe to get more easy going with the chute and corral. I would suggest to put a trough of feed in the lot right before the tub and feed him alone in there for a few days with no human pressure. As in put some feed in the trough and and check to make sure he has water than walk away don’t watch him where he can see you. I would do this for a few days or however long it takes to get him comfortable with that area. Than move the feed trough closer like inside the tub gate and do the same for a few more days and keep him singled out. Unless he is too crazy when you put him alone in the alley area coming to the gate going to the tub. I would suggest get one of the calmest girls (Bison) you have to show him it’s safe to go close to there, and leave all the chute and tub wide open. Where if he feels good he can just walk through it and nothing will happen to him. Even if he goes through it backwards as in goes through the head gate first all the way around to the tub. After some time he will eventually get to be comfortable enough to work him in the chute and get a good weight on him. I use this same process on my cows I have a small cow operation in East Texas. Every time I get a new cow I lock them in our working pens and make a big circle where the trailer they were hauled to our place is backed up to the front of the head gate and that’s how I get them out of our trailer when I drop them off too. It can make a crazy cow be very gentle and it kills me every time I do it. But I make sure they have everything they need a fresh clean roll of hay and water and I come to feed them every day so they get some human contact but only enough to feed and water them. I hope this helps you with your Bison and get them more comfortable with your working pens. Your doing a great job and don’t let anyone tell you any different it takes some serious guts abs pride to handle animals of that caliber.

I know this sounds stupid but would there be a way to make the gates and shoots less noisy. All that banging & noise. That surely doesn't help. WD40 everything.
@dakotawinds92913 жыл бұрын
kind of a catch 22 situation, some of those noises actually help move them through the system as a gate closing behind moves them forward a bit especially if the gate in front of them opens. I have not ever seen the gate and chute noises really be a issue with cattle or bison much before, even on animals that have never been through a system before.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Dusty, I PRAISE GOD for U & Ur wife!!!! It blesses me beyond measure that Ur raising these Bison & bringing their #'s back up. They R my all time. Fav. American animal & I'd LOVE to get up close to them. Just to be around them must be a humbling experience, I wish we lived closer to U, I'd be BEGGING U to come over & just sit & watch them & take photos of them... But Michigan is way too far away to just pop in for a visit. Anyway Thank You for taking on this mission in life to raise them, I mean there can't be much $$ in raising them unless U sell them for food, who would pay U to bring the herd up? The Gov.? & if so, for what reason? The only thing I can think of would be for food. There again I will admit that a BBQ Bison sandwich is the best by far hands down. They taste far better than a cow, I'm not sure what the difference is when it comes to the calories & the fat % rate when U compare the 2, I just know which one tastes the best. And to watch Big Joe as he just walks around is impressive & then there's Dunbar, I wouldn't want to see the 2 of them going after it. U know they wouldn't stop until 1 of them either backed down or 1 of them died... & that would be awful!!!! I know @ the end of the night after U all work them U must be wiped out & sore W/Pains U haven't ever felt before or @ least in a long time.... & Ur minds must be going a mile a min. trying to plan this & that & all the what if's that could happen. Talk about an adrenaline rush!!! I know that Daniel loves helping U out, he breaks out in all smiles when he talks about coming over there to help U out.. U've got a Blessed family!!!! Thank You for being there for all of us & allowing us to see & visit Ur farm in the only way that we can, it's worth every min. that I spend watching Ur Vlogs....

Black out that last little area of the tub, it looked like the way out and he could see the other bison through it. Also since you ran the 2 herd past each other, he most likely wanted to go back to protect his cows from the competing bull. Work your 2 herds on seperate days. Animals are not so much ornery/stubborn/etc. but their logic isn't ours. Work according to theirs instead.

Love that you are raising bison. They look like something from another era. I know nothing but could you just leave food in there and and let him walk through a few times without trying to work him? Also, for another naive idea, I wonder if a drone could be used to bring them in from the field.
