ONE idea would be to improve the feet. A lot of animals have special shapes that just improve grip in their environment. Maybe you need a small almost surface increase or digging claws as the foot touched the ground. The same way a human foot also folds, and squashes out. Walking in slow as a human you use tennis rackets or a larger spread out sole, so it spreads the weight. More legs also does this but it also increases weight. Tank treads, also use this idea, of spreading out weight using their footprint. If the foot is static pad, it can also STICK or suction to surfaces, so folding the foot resists this effect allowing the creature to lift it away.
