A lot of birds (heron, gull) shake prey by the neck, maybe causing some nerve damage. Wonder if that's what happened.

Yeah most likely the attack from the crow caused nerve damage. The duckling is not paralyzed because it is still moving it's feet, but it can no longer stay balanced or walk.

To answer the question I noticed in comments. Yes, crows and other predatory birds (around that size) will weaken their prey into a submissive state. Then wait until the prey is tired out from fighting itself(lashing out) to get into a safer environment or until prey is weak from convulsing from pain and survival techniques. In this particular video, the crow had to wait for the surrounding ducks to disperse from the now tired and helpless duckling before it could go in for the kill.

I feel certain that it was getting food for its chicks. It took the duck to the side & took off its head & then hid it. To come back later to eat. Oh she is. Total panic Thats the amazing thing with this video. It proves that animals are not as dumb as the human tag line say that they are. Watch as she calls & see the other ducklings run for the water. Thats conversing with each other, telling that they are all in danger.

That’s why they lay more than an egg. Meanwhile it’s healthy ones are not smart enough to take shelter because of the lackluster parenting of the mom leaving the rest out to hang dry for the gimped out duckling. It’s amazing how they keep what they can alive sometimes. It’s gotta suck to be a duck sometimes. Maybe it will return as a crow in its next life.
@AveburyEddie2 жыл бұрын
Ha Ha !! Quite possible :) You are correct ! I have seen clutches of 11 ducklings & this is why so many eggs are laid. Maybe only 2 ducklings from that clutch will make it to adulthood. Being a duck isnt easy, with so many predators about :)

That's right, I get irritated when I see some bleeding heart interventionist telling the cameraman that they are horrible for not stopping a predator catch its prey, it's how the circle of life works, only the strongest survive and then goes on to reproduce, while the weak becomes nourishment for another group to survive.

The crow behind the slaughter-
@markjymnast48884 жыл бұрын
I know your excuse or argument for not saving them is “it’s just nature, let it take it’s course and don’t intervene with it” but I personally don’t think that argument works because 1. Humans are animals and are therefore part of nature, so you’re not really going against anything by doing it. 2. It’s not like you’re going to make the Crow or Raven or their chicks starve or anything since unlike some other predators, they have a little to no trouble finding/scavenging for food either by themselves or by humans supply them with it either by purposely giving it to them or by supplying them with fresh roadkill basically every day. So saving it would have clearly been the better choice and not really significantly damage both sides. Note:I’m not trying to demonize the Crow or Raven or hating on them for taking the duck, I like them quite a lot (some of my family members raised a few and I befriended a few in some parks) and overall I actually prefer Corivades over Ducks, I’m just trying to tell you why your argument/defense for this situation doesn’t work.
@rattle95194 жыл бұрын
Mark Jymnast ok but the problem of helping them, is the attacker (crow) will also have nothing to eat. so at the end of the day. 1 of them is going to die
@markjymnast48884 жыл бұрын
Rattle I already countered that argument with my second point. They’re quit smart and have basically no trouble finding food for themselves.
