Hindsight if one of them stayed back instead of leaving nest unattended took turns to get food.robbins always build open nest no protection for chicks

Even if one of them would stay on the nest at any given time the crow would have no problem killing the parent as well as the chicks. Even two robins don’t stand a chance against a crow plus the crows partner is always somewhere close as well.

Robins aren’t particularly intelligent TBH. Hence why they spend time wondering WTF just happened despite the fact they witnessed the nestlings get picked off one by one. That and the fact they eat fecal matter.
