On July 19, 2024, American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike distributed a faulty update to its security software. This update caused widespread problems with computers running Microsoft Windows, resulting in approximately 8.5 million systems crashing worldwide. It's considered the largest outage in the history of information technology, affecting industries such as airlines, banks, hospitals, and more. The financial damage has been estimated to be at least US$10 billion¹. The issue was quickly discovered and fixed, but manual repairs were needed, leading to lingering outages on various services.
