These are definitely rare, back when I was a kid there were a few school districts that held on to these for backups. By looking at the fit and finish and features it's safe to say compared to other busses these definitely were not cheap. Great video on this rare bus sad they went out of business.

Back in the 1970s when I was in high school our district had mostly Gillig rear engine pusher busses with either Hall Scott in-line 6 engines or Caterpillar 3208s. They also had a couple of international front engine conventional busses with International V8 gasser engines.

I miss hearing these, when I was in high school my bus driver went out of his way to take a 1990 Crown Series 2 like the one in the video, one morning to pick us up just so I(and probably him as well) could ride on one last time before they were retired a few months before I graduated high school. My bus driver even gave me a crown off one of the old crown super coaches my district had from one of the mechanics. I loved these buses, the last few were stored for years in a parking lot, before they were gone I took a few pictures of the last one I rode on bus 94. Also the ones my district had looked amazing since they all had chrome aluminum wheels. Most reliable buses ever made I swear, too bad they emit too much or else my district would probably still have them. I also remember getting to ride a 1988 crown super coach tandem in middle school. Hope you’re doing well Tim, thanks for being a great friend and bus driver.

That must have been N/A engine. 6v92 TA with the right injectors and turbo setup can easily crank out 550hp, and with such a big usable RPM range, it's great for rocky mountain interstates fully loaded as you can wind it out to 2300+ rpm and then grab half a gear, and keep it up in the powerband. As long as you don't let it drop below 1700 and keep it wide open, they will run up a hill. When I drove one years ago, I could go up grapevine hill I-5 southbound with 79,000lb gross, and cruise up the hill at 1750 rpm at 49-50 mph, 50 psi on the boost gouge! Fun times. Yes it used a gallon of oil every 1000 miles, and only got 3-4 mpg going up and down all the hills on the west coast, plus LA county traffic, so it's nowhere near as good as a modern Series 60 - pre- EPA and DEF/DPF and all that BS with the right tune etc. Detroit series 60 pre-2007 would do just as good and get 6.5-7.0 mpg and not use any oil. But definitely not as fun to drive or sound as good! Freightliner FLD flattop with 13 speed pulling a 53' reefer.

That's is best school bus I've ever seen! Rear engine with air bag suspension. Wow! Did they have A/C? Still noisy inside like a school bus. Hits those bridge expansion joints with heavy solid front axle. A school bus has to clime steep rural road grades with a full load of kids on board with sharp terrain changes on gravel roads. I'd think the school bus lady would be feel pretty proud driving one of these. There is a press video with Kamala Harris the VP in front of a school bus saying "Who doesn't Love a Yellow School Bus!" Really nobody Kamala unless they are surprised to see this one roll up.

I used to drive a Thomas transit school bus, front engine, 40ft. Awesome turning radius, and it was fastest bus in the fleet. It was a little shaky @ 60 mph, but then it was smooth sailing on up to 75-80 mph. Pulled really strong up hill, out accelerating every semi truck that tried to pass me on the inclines. Lol hahaha 🤣😂 I loved driving that school bus. 😇😇

I am a California kid. The elementary school district I attended and the high school district all had Crown Coaches. Of course they were built in California. The buses I rode all had Cummins engines in them, but I understand a lot of the Crowns also carried Detroits. I'm seriously thinking about getting one of the later Crowns and converting it into an RV. I'd prefer one with gearing for highway speeds, and this later one with the 6V92. If it didn't already have an automatic transmission, I'd probably try to get an Allison automatic for it. I can drive a shift if I have to.

Never had that kind of bus nowhere in Chicago. I used to drive the 71, and 77 passenger conventional school buses, Thomas, IH and Bluebird. And the 81 and 88 passenger front engine flat nose front engine buses from IH and Bluebird, the 81 passenger rear engine IH buses that were my favorite. I drove the 2001 and 2002 Vanhool coach buses including the short 26 passenger buses for charters. Drove the 1998-2001 MCI coach buses a lot. Had fun driving them even though i was younger.

I was in elementary school in the 1950s in Soutern California. It seems that all of the school districts used Crown Coach buses. In those days they were powered by Hall Scott gas engines mounted under the floor in the middle of the bus. In the early 60s they came powered by either Cummins or Detroit engines. All of these engines were mounted on their sides.

Those old Teleflex tachometers get unreliable when they're old, so it's easiest to just replace them with a VDO 3000 RPM tach that's driven off the alternator. My Teleflex wouldn't show 600 RPM at idle, but if I adjusted it then the top end readings were way off. I wanted to use a Speedhut tach, but they don't make a 3000 RPM tach in the right size.

In grad school, I drove motor coach. We drove a very similar engine, only placed in a 1991-1994 MCI. I drove in the midwest between 1994-1999. That 6v was the worst! We called it a, "driptoit." Even though it was serviced every six months and inspected by New York inspectors, one always expected puddles on the pre and post trip. Maybe it was bad because the coach was just too heavy. Maybe it was because the injectors were too small. Maybe it was something else. I don't know. All I know is that the PA mountains made me climb at 20MPH. I'd hate to see the reaction out here in the western U.S. where some mountain passes are over 10k ft. The newer coaches had a 60 series. That was glorious (except for that Allison 6 speed transmission).

All the old 2 strokes mark their territory. A lot of guys put the old trays back under the engine bays (that mechanics tossed asap) and made catch cans for these old buses. Its just part of being a Detroit 6V owner.

20mph up the big hills with a motorcoach? There was definitely something not right with the setup. Even with 80,000 lb gross weight, I could hold 25mph with a 6v92TA. What's tare and gross weight on a motorcoach? I'm thinking tare might be 35-40,000 lbs, and maybe 10-11,000lbs onboard with 46 people averaging 200 lbs each plus some luggage. Driptroit, that was normal. Green leakers ! I do have fond memories, sure glad that those days are behind me. 4-stroke all-the-way now, and only marred by complete computer control and never-ending nightmares with sensors. I don't believe I ever turned a paid mile with an Allison, but I can definitely attest to Eaton automatics being completely useless, until the warranty is up, then they are a huge moneymaker for the shops and a huge write-off for the companies that pay repair bills.

Wow! I finally got to a part of the video where you can hear the turbo. Is that coming from the intake, or directly from the turbo? Sounds like maybe someone removed a sound baffle from the intake. Are there better turbos that can increase the performance and mileage?
@stanpatterson5033
@stanpatterson5033 2 жыл бұрын
You can change turbochargers, but you're looking at big dollars and sometimes other mods are necessary in the vicinity of the turbocharger. They make specialized turbos that use variable-vane geometry; One guy out there makes a variable chamber, so that depending on the situation, it can act like a small turbo, and then as more boost can be utilized, it adjusts to vary the boost. That one's called Switchblade. There's another KZbinr named jpaydirt who converted over a highway truck and some of his off-road construction equipment to Switchblade turbos. Yielded great results, but came at a fairly chunky cost. You would want to discuss your needs with turbocharging professionals to determine your best course of action, whether going for better mileage or better engine performance, as to what choices might be right for your situation.
