The services from the Crystal Cathedral are nothing if not monumental.. Just standing in the building takes your breath away. You feel the presence of Christ. Thank you !

As someone who is actually singing in this video I would like to make some comments. 1. Not everyone in the choir was paid. Paid choirs are very common in Southern California. I currently sing in an Episcopalian church choir and everyone is paid. It is viewed as a ministry and is therefore compensated like every other minister. 2. Secondly, the comments about the vibrato among the women. It is difficult to explain what it was like to sing in that church. It was beautiful but it was an acoustical nightmare. 10,000 panes of glass, 12 stories high, and larger than a football field you LITERALLY cOULD NOT HEAR YOURSELF. Then throw in an orchestra of 80 and put them 120 feet away and for good measure add the world's fifth largest organ. It had the potential of being an absolute nightmare every Sunday. 3. It was the brilliance of Don Neuen, the professional orchestra, the professionalism of the choir that allowed for such magnificent v music. The reason anyone could hear anything other than the organ was that every instrument and the choir was micd to an inch of our life. You can see the suspended mics in the video. There were 84 enormous speakers in the Cathedral. Without them, one would not have heard the choir. It was up to a world class sound design team that occupied an entire room to mix and balance 180 plus musicians, singers and organ into something that was able to be able to be heard, that would work for international broadcast, and that was moving and impactful. I'm guessing that on this recording one soprano was micd a little too closely. Finally, I have seen comments comparing the Crystal Cathedral Choir to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There are substantial differences between the two arms one that is not insignificant is size. There are more singers in one section of the MTC than there were in the ENTIRE Crystal Cathedral Choir. ( 75 per section in the MTC, 72 in the entire CC, 36 men 36 women).

Very interesting.Thank you for that insight. Im must say though that I am shocked to hear some of the things you said. Because if everthing was as extremely professional as you describe, then, I'm sorry to say, the all over result was actually not that great. I always thought the musicians and singers were ambitious non-professionals or semi-pros but not more. By such standards they would have been great. But if all (or the vast majority) were professionals then I must say they were terrible. Every opera house (EVEN THE LESS FAMOUS ONES IN SMALLER CITIES) has a better orchestra and choir. Many music academies and universities have better orchestras and choirs. For me personally the CC-choir only worked because it seemed to be non-pro hobby musicians. OH MY GOD!!! They were pros!!! Are you sure???😂🤣😅

And again this wasn't simply a performance. This was about celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was an 8:30 am performance on Easter morning which we had exactly ONE practice with orchestra and organ only 15 minutes before the service and taping.

IMO - This building needs grand and spacious music to fill it. While I'm a musician and I play in a contemporary style church, the best musical days for CC were when the organ and orchestra where blended, the organ led much of it, and then there were special features of contemporary music. However, my heart and prayers go out to the Crystal Cathedral ministries during what has obviously been tough few years. So grateful for the hope Dr. Schuller has given so many people throughout the years.

Matthew 5:14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Jude1:25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Thanks for posting. . The people on the platform are paid. The cost of these folk per annum was $1m. That is $20,000 per week. . Hard now to see how such extravagance was so gradually, over the years, was thought to be needed when. the most important thing is the readings from actual the Holy Bible. . . Cheers. from del-boy

LOL yeah from what I've seen, every soprano in that choir seems to be a "soloist". :) I've watched several videos trying to spot the "Queen of the High C''s" Anyone know who she is? Cause in MY church choir back home, it was ME, and I was a 17 year old BOY:). I was the youngest member of the adult chancel choir and the ONLY person male or female that could hit those notes:). LOL Now I"m a low baratone. Funny how 10 years can change a person, huh? At any rate, overall good job, boys and girls!:)

Yes, catholics sing this hymn. Each hymn may have a certain variation in the text with use of the, thee, or thus, etc.. in their denomination or depending where the biblical verse is, but they sing the same tune to 98% of the same lyrics. Most denominations that use hymnals will have the same hymn tune, except a small variant in the text. However, they have the same meaning.

Skip verses? Some hymn may have 30 verses!!! If you go to a quaint British church where they use words-only hymnals, you will likely find many more verses. Our music hymn books have limited room for verses.

How could that building have been built with so many windows or glass panes, in an Earthquake zone?
@MarulanChristianDior10 жыл бұрын
Dear *****, Yes, that's it. So, in past earthquakes and future earthquakes the building oughtn't to be affected? o0o

Dear *****, thank you for your response. Glad to hear more details about it. It is hard to find Building Code details, for Counties, so far from here. I know merely from, Architectural Digest that in California glass is restricted in house building; I read that ages ago. . The Crystal Cathedral, now called Shepherd's Grove, is a nice building. I like the other old building on the site, too. . Hard to imagine anything lasting centuries, simply because existing things, have to compete with "new inventions in technology". . I have enjoyed many televised sermons from that Church. Are you a church-goer too? . Thank you once again, VW, for your detailed information. . Cheers. from, del-boy

Then what exactly would you refer to them as? There are many denominations of christianity!

I am used to singing this hymn in Elizabethan English (Thou hast died, etc.). But since they stopped reading the KJV in school and methinks only a minority go to a church that uses KJV language (minority even goes to ch); only a small group of young persons understands KJV language. A lot of hymns have been butchered also by persons who thot they were correcting bad theology or thinking it needed a focus on Christ instead of us. Methinks most of the changes are ignorant.

For example, imagine singing all verses to Immanuel's Land! Check it out if you don't know that beautiful hymn. Some of the verses are rather secular. Perhaps the poem should be distinguished from the hymn which obviously leaves out the secular verses.

A little late for this observation. Choir members must be taught that they are a unit and not individuals. They must stop their individual vibrato, it sounds awful. It takes a lot of work to get this under control, but other major choirs around the world do it.

well in their defense, as you can see from the camera pans, the average age group for this choir is around 50. I would guess some of them have been singing for so many years, any hope of voice control or correcting bad habits would pretty much be lost on them at this point.
