No Nonsense Whisky

7 жыл бұрын

In Jim Murray's 2016 Whisky Bible, the Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye won best whisky in the world. In fact, it achieved a score of 97.5 out of 100 from Jim.
This scoring caused a lot of controversy as, typically, the northern harvest rye is supposed to be a cheap dram.
Does the whisky actually live up to the mantle of best whisky in the world? We shall see

There's no bag in Canada and it's a $35 plus tax bottle in BC. It's OK, but Lot 40 blows it's doors off...

foodquig they dropped the bag and box after the first batch sold out.

Didn't they keep the box and bag for export markets? I could be wrong on that part...

It's not really a bad whisky... It's just not quite as great as Jim Murray said it is, and because of that I can understand how some consumers may feel like they have been misled and let down after having pumped-up expectations...

No Nonsense Whisky Sounds hard to believe. If this is true Murray should say that and warn Diageo to never pull a fast one like that. But I doubt that is the case. Just Murray stirring the pot with a sensational declaration of best whisky to generate book sales.

People seemed so scandalized by JM’s award, even going so far as to suggest a conspiracy. But remember, this from a guy who in 2017 rated plain old Ballantine’s over just about every single malt on the market. To put things in perspective. I tried Northern Harvest before all the hoopla and really enjoyed it, even if it’s somewhat uncouth. But high-rye whisky is not for everyone. Sort of like IPA beer.

I think it's also fair to say he was given a very selective batch of it that was vastly superior to stuff on shelves now. I agree though, after all we need to remember it's just one guys opinion

Canadian Club Rye is better than C.R Rye.

Yeah, this sells for about 100 to 150 AUD here in Australia. Bit of extra cost 'cause it has to be imported direct. I'll admit to being curious about it...but not THAT curious. :)

The 51% Rye is for the US to be called Straight Rye. Canada can call any Whisky Rye even if it has no Rye in it, i.e. Highwood Ninety Rye (100% corn)

It's a Canadian thing and been that way for 200 years. When you upload this to Connosr, you will hear from @Paddockjudge and @Victor :)

is that true? i just thought that was an old language thing people said here in Canada that persisted and not an industry standard since rye was so prominent in the past. If someone asks if you want a rye and coke, you simply mean a whiskey and coke, but many know the difference of an actual rye. i never expect an actual rye to be handed when someone says that. edit: well, i expect it if they say a rye on the rocks. but it indeed seems to be the industry standard, i never knew that and ive not found a Canadian rye that didn't have strong rye characteristics, but seems ill have to be vigilant on some of the more expensive whiskies labeled rye if i ever break my 40$ bracket; after graduation perhaps. @@peterwhite507

An interesting selection Vin. I thought we were done with this. Far too many people that I respect have said that this is alright but nothing better. To be honest, I'm not into buying 'alright' rye. I don't buy many and when I do I want them to be good ones. Jim Murray has done a lot of good things in the world of whisky over the years but he must have been smoking something pretty good when he reviewed this.

I also reviewed this in German and gave it just a solid B as a grade. LOT 40 IS SO MUCH BETTER :-)

All the rye I've seen for sale here in the uk is quite expensive compared to bourbon. I've no idea why. I guess it's a bit more of a niche market here.

It's alright. If I can remember, I think it finished outside the top three rye whiskies at the Canadian whisky awards. But that really doesn't matter. Much better rye in Canada then this. Standard Crown is Ginger Ale mix, but if you can find bottles of the 70's and earlier are worth a try. Crown XO and Black are really the good sippers now. The Noble Collection bottles are decent but underwhelming. Any J.P. Wiser's is the Canadian Whisky worth getting right now, their batting 100 with their releases

Mediocre Rye by any standards, the year Murray named it his WOY it did not even win Canadian WOY (in Canada), that was Lot 40. I would suggest Wiser's Legacy if you can get a sample.

Good review Vin. Out of interest did you get any banana from it? First time I tried it I didn't then had it in that blind tasting recently and we all got banana from it. My thoughts are a change in the blend but keeping the name to live off the Jim Murray hype 🤔
