Croydon, London - 4K Walk (2024)

A Sunday walk through the London Borough of Croydon, from West Croydon to East Croydon. Starting from a small market town, Croydon has expanded into one of the most populous areas on the southern fringe of London, now being one of Greater London's leading arts and cultural centres.

In the 60s my mother wouldn't take me shopping in Croydon unless I was wearing my Sunday best. Jeans were a no no. Non-white faces were a rarity.

See that tall white building at the end of the street opposite the station? A wonderful 1960s hexagonal office block ! So, thanks for the memories, I enjoyed the walk !

At 9:59 Centrale shopping center on teh right, Whitgift center on the left. I went to school right there in the center of town before Trinity Whitgift was sold for millions and we moved out to Shirley Park.

I live in the Scottish borders, but I have a cousin who lives in Croydon I have never seen so many fruit and veg stores in one street before

At 11:30 the old Alms houses on the left. Also a gift of Bishop Whitgift. At 12:55 The street market is on the right down Church street. See 19:34 I wonder if the old 'Pie and Ale' shop is still there! You could have got the tram at the end of the street back up to East Croydon Station !

If you want to end up in EAST CROYDON, you are going in the wrong direction! ok, so he turned back bfore he got to MAYDAY hospital, a major teaching hospital in South London. You may notice plenty of Indian and African shops, but also plenty of white people. That's how it is.
