please don't just test SSDs with speed test software, actually write various files to it, couple large ones, many tiny ones, always use the same set of files for every drive tested, much more suitable real world test situation

I've been using Crucial professionally, and rather irresponsibly, for about the last 7 years. I have an mx500 as my main drive in my photo/video editing rig - no problems. I have another one in external enclosure that I use as my mobile storage for work. I have over 10 years of ACAD design work and project photos on it. Lastly, I just bought a few 2TB X8 portable SSD's that I'm getting ready to migrate my Lightroom photo catalog to. For what it's worth, I have at least 3 Samsung SSD's of various types and those have all been great also - T7 shield is very good, and pretty comparable to the Crucial X9 Pro. The only SSD I've ever had a problem with with was an Intel m.2 nvme drive - I don't recall the model. But Intel sold that business to SK Hynix.

Laptops might not have usb 2x2 - modern motherboards for desktops do..

X9’s are great. They are small too, and fit in MagSafe wallets. I bought a MagSafe rings, threw it on my laptop case (on back of screen) and can now plop the drive there for safe keeping, but still easily remove it/swap it out when needed.

Thanks, your review was very helpful! I'm not sure why its still unlisted or why an unlisted video showed up in my search but I'm glad it did. I just got a 2TB X9 to connect to an iPhone 15 Pro Max and it arrived before the phone did. Its so small! I bought a magsafe sticker so I could attach it to the phone but the drive is a bit smaller than the ring so it will be interesting to see if that works. I'm on a Mac and unfortunately Storage Exectutive only works on Windows so there's no way to update the firmware or to tell which version I have. Their FAQ has instructions on how to to these things on older versions of MacOS but nothing recent. It doesn't look like there are any updates yet anyway. If you know of any teeny tiny USB hubs with just 2 or 3 ports I would love to see a review. (ssd, microphone, and maybe a battery)

hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does it work connected to phone with password on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to a phone?

A question for you: I have an old HP All in One PC model Pavillion 23 with 16 gb RAM and 1 tb ROM HDD SATA running Windows 11 home 64 bit. I want to substitute the 1 tb HDD for a 2 tb SSD, but I see that there are three types of SSD in the way they write and their durability. So, can you explain and recommend which of the types of SSD's will be more reliable and durable please?

I would just go with tb4 if speed was a huge criteria, but these look pretty nice. Great video review!

They look great I almost made switch to ssd hard drives until I look more into them ssd don’t last over 4 years if your lucky some make it to 10 years after that they die out stop working, keep writing on drives it lower ssd life span, if you don’t use ssd in weeks maybe months it also lower life span of ssd drive

Does it work with nvidia shield without additional power supply? I bough shield because of your recommendation, and it seems shield can't deliver power to m.2 ssd drives...

I wonder if I can get x10 full speed on my scar 17 2022 laptop. Website says it has 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C DisplayPort 1.4/100W power delivery 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A 1x Thunderbolt 4 with DisplayPort 1.4

Interesting review, thanks! One question: what format did you use for your CrystalDiskMark tests? I have found out that APFS gives better performance (faster read/write speeds) than ExFAT (on a MacBook Pro Intel computer).

I thought thunderbolt/usb4 would've been compatible with 2x2. Turns out it's not, you're limited to gen 2 performance.

I bought the Crucial X10 Pro USB SSD and found that when connected to my ASUS laptop that was bought in 2022, I get a read and write speed from the X10 of 900 MB/sec read speed and 700 MB/sec write speed. This is running the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. When I run the same tests on the internal Gen4 NVMe M.2 Internal SSD inside my ASUS laptop I get a read speed of 2800 MB/sec and a write speed of 2500 MB/sec. The NVMe M.2 internal SSD chip is much faster, but the Crucial SSD is very compact.

I would think professionals would want USB 4 or thunderbolt, the 2by standard is an odd man out.

Problem is Thunderbolt Drives are really really $$$. If you have a USB 3.2x2 this is a lot more affordable and the speeds are almost as fast as thunderbolt SSD (3,000mb/s vs 2000mb/s)

I thought the MBP M1 Max were USB 4. 40 Gbps. Why is the X10 capping at 1,000 speed?
@davidcarrico3385
@davidcarrico3385 10 ай бұрын
The x10 supports 2x2 which is an optional standard for gen 2. The faster thunderbolt and usb4 don’t include or mandate 2x2 - they achieve their greater speed in other ways.

It looks like the Crucial drives perform alot better than the T7 in alot of the tests. So if these were the same price or cheaper than the T7 then the Crucial drives should get your recommendation over Samsung. Also did you test these drives with a Usb-A cable? Would the performance be the same if your pc has a 10Gbps Usb-A port?

I’m a complete newbie but I don’t understand why more people (unlike yourself) don’t state that your port determine the speed and therefore all the published speeds are moot if your port doesn’t support their standard. Thank you for mentioning this.
