You are invited to celebrate with me my birthday and learn about the concept that has changed my life - Differentiation (developed by Murray Bowen and David Schnarch) - My ability to be myself and close to others.
Differentiation was a concept coined by Murray Bowen and later developed by David Schnarch. It is the basis for the Crucible approach in couples therapy. In short, the Crucible approach sees intimate relationships as crucibles that help humans grow and develop.
The four 'points of balance' in the crucible approach are:
⚫️ Flexible solid sense of self
⚫️ Quiet mind, calm heart
⚫️ Grounded responding
⚫️ Meaningful endurance
Throughout this talk, I share my personal and professional journey with this paradigm.
In this talk, I explain the crucible approach and the concept of Differentiation. I share examples from the clinic and my personal life.
The talk includes practical tips on how to change your life by bringing more of yourself to your relationships while becoming more intimate with others in your life.

Thank you for this video. I read one Schnarch's book and loved it so much! What you said about therapist being differentiated first (before recommending it to the clients) I saw it in my own therapy: when I confronted my previous therapist about something I didn't like about our therapy or her treatment, she would turn defensive, I think this is not ok. With my current psychologist, trained in psychoanalysis, where they work so much with transference, I can say whatever I want to him and know he will not react, just turn it in a tool in my therapy. It is a very diferent experience and a really transformative one. I think this is differentiation.

Thanks again for watching and commenting. Yes, therapist's level of differentiation is crucial for their ability to help their clients. I'm glad to hear that you feel free with your therapist and I hope you'll be able to raise differentiation throughout your life. Good luck!

I picked up a book from a thrift shop on Differentiation, thinking that it's about theories of why we are different from each other. When I got home, the book is about marketing, about making more money than other people. I was intrigued that I searched for a better explanation. I stopped searching when I landed on your site. Thank you. Oh and happy birthday.

I appreciate the time you have dedicated to this topic. I took good notes and will use this video as a reference when needed. Such an important discussion to be had. I wasn't even aware of differentiation until a few months ago and at first, I was scared/sad because I didn't even know one could have a solid sense of self. It was like an awakening to how I had been living my life. I was constantly people-pleasing in order to feed that reflected sense of self which was overly exhausting and helping no one. I hadn't even thought of how to validate my own self or how to make my own decisions- this way I can have true intimacy and not fragile connections. I'm so grateful to be building my solid sense of self. Thank you again

Wow, what an amazing video. I've recently been introduced to the concept of self differentiation by my counselor, and there's so much here that resonates with me and where I'm at in my journey. "The only way around is through, and the only way I can grow is through the pain, and the ruptures, and the repairs." -- this hit home especially. I feel like I just got a sneak preview of the next few months of my life. Thank you for posting this - looking forward to watching the other personal development videos.

I just discovered your channel, and this video and what you are speaking about resonated so much with me. I also started reading Bowen and then Carl Whitaker, this was after I qualified as a Systemic Psychotherapist and it fundamentally changed my entire professional and personal selves in profoundly positive ways. I have not heard about Schnarch, but I will read some of his, which book do you recommend I start with? I am actually at this moment also preparing a brief presentation of how differentiation as a concept, map, approach, orienting principle can be used in clinical supervision.

Thank you for the video, which book do you recommend for differentiation and Bowen family therapy. I am reading “ family therapy in clinical practice” but it has so much explanations about how the theory was developed and less on explaining the theory and how to increase self and family differentiation. Thank you again!

I loved this video. I have been working with a therapist on self validation. I am sensing that my husband and I are actually at levels of differentiation. (He more differentiated than me, though it could just be more Independence/stubborness masked as differentiation. Could you point me to any resources for couples who are on different levels? This works also seems related to the Emotionally Focused Work of Sue Johnson author of Hold Me Tight. Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love. Are you familiar?
@ThePotentialState

Thanks Jill for watching and commenting. I would recommend reading The Passionate Marriage by David Schnarch. You'll find in that book more practical help. This is a different view from the EFT work of Sue Johnson. Good luck!

I am an MFT student and currently trying to complete an assignment on differentiation. I have spent quite a bit of time searching for an appropriate intervention to add to the handout I have been working on. I think that from this video I can now develop an intervention based on the 4 tips you talk about here. Where can I learn more details about these 4 tips?
