About Cruel Summer:
From executive producer Jessica Biel (“The Sinner”), “Cruel Summer” is a psychological thriller that follows two young women: Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance. I really loved how the switching perspectives made you either sympathise with Kate or Jeanette, depending on the focus. You'd naturally start to feel for Kate at first. But after the truth comes out about Martin and Kate, you're inclined to root for Jeanette, but then THAT twist ending happens...

The moral of the story is that Jeanette became a pure evil sociopath for no discernible reason other than that she was an awkward teenage girl that wanted to be liked. Cool twist bro.

@@loveforever9747 It was something I always like about Kate's character. Even though she was popular with the cute boyfriend they never once were those types of popular. She and Jamie were always kind to Jeanette and her friends. Even when Mallory got to know Kate she realized she hated her for no reason in the first place. So, (and I apologize for any spoilers) I can't after the ending, have any sympathy for Jeanette

@@souixds I sympathize with Jeanette up until the ending of course. The thing is she didn’t actually steal her life. She wished for it. As most socially awkward teens do. We have seen these tropes play out in every high school scenario for years. Jeannette wasn’t evil. Not at first... What’s evil is Mallory allowing Kate to go after Jeanette when she knew she was there too. Because she hated her and how their friendship ended. We still don’t know if Jeanette actually played apart in kate rescue.. but yes Jeanette allowed being the invisible girl turn her into a monster. However, Kate lied to cover up things that should have always been revealed to the police.

The POV and different perspectives from both Kate and Jeanette really made it hard who to trust. After what occurred in the finale, it almost demonstrates just how everything isn’t always what it seems

Having a show focus on grooming, sexual assault, bullying, social isolation, the power and destructiveness of the media, sounds like a more mature show that ends with a powerful message. Adding that plot twist in the end cheapend the show in a way, and reduced it to its original point as a teen show, and undermined the message it was trying to create. Think to yourself how many people do I know struggle, or have stuggled at one point from bullying and loneliness (even by friends "Tamil and Mallory"), and being misunderstood, and tossed around. How many people do you think have suffered from the media harassing them. Now think how many people you know are actual psychopaths and sociopaths.. pretty minute number in comparison right? Painting Jeanette as the psycho, undermined all the struggles she went through and reduced her from a complex, relatable teen, to your typical one dimentional hollywood psycho. Moral of the story? Don't be kind to the awkward kid trying to fit in, he might murder you just to take your place.

I honestly expected more from this series. Its not that it wasn't good. I really enjoyed it. But for some reason I expected the show to be alot more complicated and twisty. And while we did get some good twists in the finale -- they just felt hollow: - Jeanette revealing her true villian face at the end felt like the wrong ending -- they should have made it be someone else. Anyone else. - Kate and Mallory becoming a thing felt forced. If there had been more depth and build up then it would have felt more organic. But having Kate who already went through so much shit with Martin jump into a relationship with the highly sketchy Mallory feels like such a disservice to Kate. - Vince and Ben's relationship somehow felt like collateral. We didn't get any resolution from their relationship.

Nahhh I think the opposite. I love that they ended it that way. It was a real plot twist punch to the gut cuz the show gets us to root for Jeannette, then we find out it was all just an act. I think that ending saved the show🤣 I was kinda disappointed when it was looking like a "we're all friends now." Ending

ending made it work. all of the weird actions that made Jeanette suspicious all throughout especially 1994 would be cancelled out entirely if she never actually had anything big to hide.

Im just excited for the new season next year. Like whether we have new characters or same, I hope they bring Vince back. He was my fave throughout, then Kate. Apart me didn’t like Jeanette until the ending seeing her revert back to her Kate persona, knowing she got a way with something. Which is why she kept going back to that house to steal stuff. Like wow, such a devious character….but I liked it. Great twists and turns throughout. Now I dont have anything to watch. Where’s the PLL reboot 🥺

I did enjoy this show and I love that all major characters are flawed but these are my concerns or issues: 1. How did the cops think that they're the ones who killed Martin during the shoot out? Did they not test the bullet that killed him to know that it was from the gun named "Annabelle" and not from the gun of the policemen? And how did the shoot out even started if Martin is already dead before the cops arrived? Why would the cops fire their guns in the first place if there's no threat visible in the scene, like Martin? 2. This show could have been cut into 6 to 8 episodes. In my opinion, there are some filler episodes and unnecessary subplots that dragged the whole story of the entire season and they didn't have a good pay-off. 3. Mallory didn't apologize to Jeanette for letting her take the blame this entire time Kate and the whole world thought Jeanette was the one who saw Kate kidnapped and didn't say anything. I know Jeanette is not really innocent since the plot twist in the end showed that she knew this whole time that Kate was kidnapped by Martin and she kept it a secret. But the point is, Mallory didn't know that. In her mind, Jeanette is innocent and she's letting her take the blame that's ruining her life and Mallory still has the nerve to hate Jeanette despite all of that. I really hate Mallory as a character and I'm not defending Jeanette because I hate her too, just like Kate. I hate them all but mostly Mallory who thinks she's better than anyone. The actress who played her is great though in portraying an annoying character. All the actors in the show did a great job. 4. I think they kind of wasted the potential they had on having the three year comparison of events as a structure of the story. It was really interesting at the first few episodes even though it's kinda confusing at times. But my main issue is, they could have used this three-year alternate storytelling of events in a better way like the other shows did like "This Is Us" and "Once Upon A Time" for example. 5. The plot twist or the reveal is not really that shocking or surprising. It was not twisty or complicated. It was just a simple misunderstanding that most audience already guessed/predicted. I was expecting a kind of plot twist like the one from "The Sinner" (Season 1) but I guess that was my fault for expecting anything. The misunderstanding could have been solved easily if Kate just agreed to talk to Jeanette the first time she offered to but I guess it's understandable after everything she's been through. Also, Kate gets mad at Jamie for having a relationship with Jeanette knowing that she cheated on him with Martin. I wanted a scene where Kate apologizes to Jamie or a scene where Jamie finds out that Kate had an affair with Martin. But after all, this is just a show and I've enjoyed it for what it is. I hope it gets better on Season 2. And in reality, I would probably hate Jeanette the most if I discover her secret and she's probably the most dangerous one among all the characters of this show. I dont think Mallory needs to apologize to jennette. She had no clue if jennette seen kate or not. Mallory didnt even think ot was kate she saw until she was found. Her and jennette weren't friends so why would mallory know if she actually saw kate or not. I keep seeing this on other pages confused as to why ppl would think Mallory would know. Mallory is friend with kate and believes her bc she knows she kept going in the house. If I were Mallory I would believe kate too.

Having the most ND-coded character be the villain in the end was terrible. Why couldn't you just leave it with a happy ending? Why do you need to milk everything? You just took away from a great story about grooming and misunderstanding and the importance of communication and turned it into a cheap teen thriller drama.
