I have a pacemaker. It keeps the heart beating in a proper rhythm. It's operation is monitored by an app on my phone and reports back to some control center via the internet. An internet connection is not required to operate, just to report back if there is a problem. The gentleman you referenced is blowing smoke up Carnival's stern. His phone is in airport mode while flying to the port and he will not die.

Agreed. I hope the cruiseline checks into this. With taking care of family with pacemakers, the only possible time I needed internet, etc, is the requirement periodic e check-in which can be anticipated and schedulted.

I was wondering about that because how could they possibly need internet 24/7 for a pacemaker. Those things are programmed by the Dr to work automatically if an arrhythmia is detected by the pacemaker, not an app. 😡

We came back very late from book through the cruise excursion. It was very funny because people on the ship were treating us like peer runners, but we knew they were waiting for us because our tour operator had contacted the ship.

I don't think people realize that they can contact the port authorities to tell their ships they are running late and if the ship has the buffer time they will wait.

We were in Cozumel on a Carnival Cruise that did not leave on time. The Cruise Director announced that a ship tour was late and we were waiting for them.

We had this same encounter on NCl. We were in the Dominican, and our ship sponsored tour was late getting us back, and as we got on the ship, we were getting somewhat chastised by the crew for being late. They kept telling us to hurry up because we are late, as if we didn't already know that and as if it was our fault. And, there were still others coming after us, so it wasn't like we were the last ones on the ship.

I was recently on a Royal Caribbean cruise to Costa Rica. My excursion got caught in horrible traffic for 2 hours. Then, a police motorcycle pulled up beside us and spoke to the driver and then we pulled into the lane for oncoming traffic. We were off! Unfortunately, the police didn't bother to stop the oncoming traffic for us! Somehow we made it, but what a ride

Just returned from a cruise on the Celebrity Beyond and our excursion booked through them to complete the Panama Canal was 2 1/2 hours late returning. Ship was waiting for us. Never so happy to see a ship! Thanks Celebrity.

Word to the wise: Whenever you do an excursion in Rome , ALWAYS, ALWAYS Book excursion with cruise line. We had a 9 hr. tour because port is far from City. First 2 people were late by 15 min to get back on bus. 2nd Heavy traffic getting out of Rome. 3rd. BUS broke down on the way back in the country side. We had to wait for another bus. Long story short we were 4 hrs. late getting back to ship. THE SHIP HAD TO WAIT FOR FOR US BECAUSE WE BOOKED THROUGH THEM.

Glad it worked out for you but worth noting that the ship absolutely will wait for as long as it can for official excursion customers. However, sometimes they HAVE to leave due to requirements at the port. Of course if that happens then it's the cruise line's responsibility to get you to the next port on the itinerary and look after you.

Something similar happened to us with Royal Caribbean back in 2019 on excursions to both Florence and Rome where the city is about an hour away from the port. In both cases, there was construction and traffic on the Autostrade and we didn't get back to the ship until an hour after the announced departure time. We weren't even the last bus in, and they waited until everyone was back on board before departing.

I always book with the cruise line if the excursion is more than 3-4 hours. For example, all day Lamanai excursion in Belize - 1 hour bus, 45 minute speed boat to walk through jungle to the stepped pyramid and other amazing sites and then trek back . There's no way I would do that except through the cruise line. Too many things to go wrong and delay getting back to the ship.

Actually the ship does NOT have to wait for you, even if you booked through them. However, they WILL take care of you and pay for everything (lodging, transportation, etc) you need while stranded and get you to the next possible port they can meet you at. If they CAN wait for you, they will, but a ship often MUST leave at its appointed time.

Well, we have never booked a Cruise line excursion when in Civitavecchia. The walk from the ship to the train station is about 20 minutes. The very frequent trains take around 45 minutes to reach San Pietro station, just behind the Vatican. We always timed it so that we'd get a train that took us back to the ship 2 hours before embarkation. Never had an issue. Yes I know there can be train strikes and mechanical issues, but that's the risk you take to save a substantial amount of money. Even in Livorno we got the cruise bus into town which dropped us off right outside the train station, then got a train to Florence. Much cheaper and more entertaining than the cruise ship offering as you can get a little slice of Italian life.

The plus of river cruises is if you are left behind, you can get into an Uber and catch up at the next port. It's not that far away.

Yes, in Grand Cayman.. My family and I went to the turtle retreat. The people that operated the vans, that were to take us back to the ship, kept wanting to add more people to our van, which was filled to the Max. the driver kept saying I've got to go I've got to get them back I got to go...lol. The man told our driver "don't go" and finally he just took off... we missed the all aboard time, but thankfully they didn't leave us. My Excursion was purchased through Carnival.

My husband has IED defibrillator. While it does hook up through wifi to transmit your readings, it does not require internet connection to work appropriately. It is totally independent of any such thing. Scam!!

I have been on a Carnival booked excursion that was late, very late. The ship had to leave but it just moved out to open water where they ferried us to the ship. (Cozumel) it was an amazing experience because it was dark by the time we got in and the ship was beautiful all lit up. Something you don’t often get to see.

Very first cruise, excursion in Belize, booked thru the ship. 18 yr old son broke his collarbone, had to visit a private hospital ER, touch n go if son would be able to sail. Luckily he was cleared. Biggest surprise...Carnival paid the ER bill! Horrifying experience but that was in 2013 & we're still sailing!

Not surprising if you’re on an excursion they booked they have a legal duty of care. I broke my foot on a private excursion in Marseilles three years ago. I got it treated in the ship’s hospital and they charged me $500 for a very bad x-ray and an incorrect diagnosis.

Yes , my husband and I almost got left behind in Puerto Vallarta, we did an excursion that I booked privately but miscalculated the time to get back....we were literally running up the ramp when they were starting to pull it back up! We got scolded by an engineer type and then heard our names being paged when we got back in!! 😮😅

We were in the Orkney Islands in Scotland this past summer on the Regal Princess. We took the public bus to Skara Abrae (don't miss this!). We were back in plenty of time and decided to relax in town for a little while. After a while, we walked down to the shuttle bus and saw one headed back to the ship. We thought we'd wait for the next shuttle but one never came, that was the last one. We were finally told that we should run down the street to get a taxi but when we went, they said there were no taxis available. We were panicked because our teenage children had already gone back to the ship and we had only 20 minutes before all aboard and we were still about 2 miles away. In desperation, we flagged down a sweet, local schoolteacher driving down the road and she took us to the ship. The ship's officers enjoyed watching us running from the drop-off point to the gangway. They said we had plenty of time and that we could have walked but we were already there. That was a day to remember!

Tony, often a ship has to leave when it has to leave (especially ocean vessels). They only have the berth in port for certain hours, and there are other reasons as well that they could have to leave... so EVEN IF YOU BOOK WITH THE CRUISE LINE, if you don't get back in time, you may miss the ship. However, in that case the cruiseline will pay for your hotel, transportation, etc. or whatever you need and get you to the next port to meet the ship.

We were just about a hour late getting back to the ship from an excursion in Tuscany! It was an absolutely wonderful excursion but it started to rain very heavy and we ran into crazy traffic that was slowed way down because of all the rain. The ship waited for the 48 of us who were on that tour. Whew!

We were on the carnival paradise in the fog. Carnival did a great job at keeping us occupied and reopening the bars & food areas. Even though we had to vacate our rooms at 5pm and wait on the 9 &. 10 decks until 7:15pm, they did the best they could for us passengers given Mother Nature fog. Crazy thing was disembarking…since we were trying to disembark quickly, so the embarking could happen around the same…anyways, we’re back safe at home.

We had two "come back late from the excursion" experiences...on consecutive days. The first one was delayed because of traffic in Panama City. The second, in Costa Rica, the bus broke down on the way to the venue. By the time they got a new bus to us and on to the zip-lining tour, we wound up being about 15 minutes late getting back to the ship. Fortunately, both excursions were through the cruise line so they waited. Unfortunately, in both cases we felt that the ship's crew was less than accommodating considering nothing was in our control.

As someone who has an internal defibulator I do not need internet for device to work but do have to use it to down load the devise recording . I have cruised just can't go through metal detectors and dr.said could skip the down load while away.

Another important thing to know if you book through the cruise; IF THE SHIP HAS TO LEAVE YOU BEHIND, It's the cruise line responsibility to get you to the next port of call on their expense. So flights, hotels, and food are covered by the cruise line.

We were on a cruise ship excursion in the Bahamas where the guide got off the bus before we got to the port as well. We weren't late though, so all was good. I always take a picture of that information they provide with the ship contact and the US embassy before I get off the ship.

I was in Thessaloniki back in the late 90s. It was such an awesome city to visit. There is an old fort up on the hill with great views. And if you are there over night they have bay cruises that are awesome. From the city you can catch a Bus down to Athens, but I would recommend taking the train instead. There is a train with sleeper cars available from Thessaloniki to Athens that run over night, bringing you into Athens first thing in the morning and take 4 hours less time to make the trip than taking the Bus... And the train was cheaper at the time. We took the late night train, arrived in Athens early morning, spent the whole day there, then the afternoon train back to Thessaloniki arriving back before midnight. Granted this is more advice for someone traveling, not so much someone on a cruise with limited port stops.

Out of the 7 cruises I've been on, 2 cruises we returned late due to fog issues. The very first cruise I went on had a huge fog delay on return. We took a cruise out of Galveston at the end of January. We didn't dock until about 2:30 pm and finally disembarked well about 4 pm. Not sure what time the next cruise departed. The 3rd cruise (December) we went on was also delayed on return due to fog, but that time we were allowed to get off about 1130 am.

My brother-in-law had that same type defibrillator. It doesn't need a constant connection. When the person connects to the internet, it uploads all data from the last upload. Also, the cruise line only guarantees that they will pay to get you to the next port. They won't wait forever.

I actually was on the Infinity last year and we stopped at Thessaloniki-but I was so sad to learn (ahead of time) there are no ruins to see. 😢 Ancient Thessalonica is completely buried. Which is why going to Ephesus, and getting to sit in the same stadium where Paul’s preaching causes a riot, was so incredible!

I was on the 'Carnival Paradise FOG Excursion' No problem Anywhere. I take responsibility for over eating that day. Up at 5AM. There were no issues with me till 8.55 PM and LYFT. Price went from $ 47 to $57 to $67 to $77 45 minutes later, no show. I took a cab, and the cab driver explained how they crank up the price when the demand increases. Like a ship arriving. Lyft.

We were on an excursion at Cozumel booked thru Carnival to an all inclusive beach. Everything was fine on the way there, but on the way back we noticed we were going very slow. Apparently, the boat lost an engine so we were travelling back against the wind and only going 1 knot. What should have been a 45 minute ride, took over 3 hours. Needless to say, everyone was very unhappy. We were supposed to be back on the ship by 6:30pm. We walked on at 6:29pm. The excursion desk people were waiting for us at the dock. We did get half our money back as an on board credit.

Internal defibrillators don’t need internet to work. They don’t even need a phone to work. Can you imagine possibly dying just because you were in a cellular dead (ha) zone or your phone battery died? They only need wifi or cellular to upload data to their doctor.

Wife and I was on a cruise to Bermuda. Got off to go to the beaches, and when we got back to the port, we noticed the little tent was missing, and people were yelling down to us to hurry up. When we got to the ship, no one was smiling. A cruise official met us and made me sign a book (which was full of signatures) and she handed us our passports, cash and wallet from the safe. Evidently, she was about to bring those to the police so we can at least find out way back home. I have to say that we did not see an all aboard sign at the gangway when we left. But we were local celebrities that day. Glad we made it and didn't hold anyone up. Lesson learned.

my son has this pacemaker with defibrilator at age 37 due to heart failure. his cardiac team includes md with electrophysiology specialty and connections that monitor my son's cardiac status. if pattern not normal or shock given/which my son has had a few times, the cardiogist will be notified at once and he will text/call son on cell. so it works if all connections good. i think cruiser should not get all free with connection but ok for wifi. just to make sure it works for safety. that way the ship is aware of a cruiser who may not otherwise notify them of heart problem/pacemaker w/defib., and if incident on board, could be dangerous.

My first cruise was out of Tampa. We paid more so we wouldn't be going during hurricane season. We ran into 2 hurricanes!!! We were 36 hours late get back to port! We were standing, everyone was, in the hallways with our luggage because we were kicked out of our rooms!!! No food, bathrooms difficult to get to. One elderly man was pushed through the crowds in a wheelchair. He was bleeding, heavily, from his abdomen. Medical couldn't reach him, so they had to get him to Medical. I never hurt so badly from standing for so long. Finally in the wee hours if the morning we got to port and they started to deboard. After 10 minutes we stopped. Someone was caught with illegal drugs. An hour later we finally got off the ship. We missed our flight and it was 2am. Thankfully, the airlines brought in extra staff because they were expecting us. Rescheduled our flight with no issues for the following morning. We got a room at the Marriott at the airport. The most comfortable bed, ever, after standing for so long. We still hadn't eaten and nothing was open at the airport except a newspaper place with snacks. We grabbed a bunch of snacks, ate, and I never slept so soundly!! I still went on cruises after this though. Never had anything happen like that again!

Closest I got to being left behind was many years ago in Grand Cayman ( a tender port). Was on a private experience, we finished early, but stopped at a local pub, or bar, for a cerveza(or two). Lost track of time. Ran back to the terminal. We, my friend and I were the last two people on the last tender.

Commonly many mistakenly think cruise ship will wait if you are on a ship booked tour. If the ship must depart due to time slots or tides they wont wait. But they will hold offshore and send a tender or arrange getting back on board at no extra cost.. Perhaps at the next port. Always carry your passport in foreign ports but if it is in your safe they remove it and leave with the port agent in worst case.

Our Excursion in Belize was over 30 min late. 2 problems happened. One the port time changed. Two the cruise line told the tour company the wrong time to get us badk. Thankfully we didn't get left as it was booked through the cruiseline

Yea that person is trying to get one over on Carnival or they just have no idea how their device works. ICD's or implantable cardioverter defibrillator doesnt need internet to operate. Some use internet to send data to the doctor but the device will fully function without internet. I am in the process of possibly needing an ICD and have been researching them extensively and as a retired paramedic I have dealt with the devices in the field.

We always book through the cruise line. We have had one cut it real close. Also, on our last cruise we booked an excursion but when we were looking back through the information, the activity level was mislabeled. I have some mobility issues and it was very easy to cancel and get a refund at guest services.

I was on an excursion to Monaco. We got stuck in traffic, but we had a crew member on the cruise ship excursion.they called the ship and the ship waited for us.

I get travel insurance not hoping to use it but in case I need to, and booking through the cruise lines is like that so to make sure I'm covered when I need it. This coming cruise sounds like so much fun!

My first cruise was in Alaska. We were late getting back from an excursion. I was freaking out. My husband assured me they would wait for is as we booked through NCL. We were about 20 minues late and they did wait of course. I was skeeeered but, all was fine! 😂

On a Danube River cruise many years ago, the ship's tour guide took us on a long tour of Bratislava, her home city. The ship absolutely had to leave the dock by 4:00, so it wasn't there when we got there at 4:30. This was before the era of cell phones, but our guide wasn't worried. She led us on a hike to a seemingly abandoned riverfront area that had a rickety, decaying wooden dock, and there was our boat waiting for us!

If they give free wi-fi for medical reasons then they should not charge for distilled water for passengers using c-pap machines. If you are prone to sea sickness you must pay for your own premium balcony although outside view in mid section of ship greatly curbs the effects of motion. Mobility carts on ships are very pricey but medically needed. Also, providing wi-fi means they are assuming liability when ship wi-fi slows or goes down which often happens.

We were one of the first group of cruisers that went cave tubing in Belize, no one knew much about the shore excursion and no cruise ship people were with us, about 40 people were on the bus and we were about an hour late getting back, we were hoping that maybe 40 people could be missing and would the ship wait for us, they did, I think it was a Carnival ship and you had to tender into the port. If you get a chance to go to Belize, go cave tubing, it's GREAT.

Love your various channels, Tony! Picking up on the internet access story - Personally I think the internet is a total rip-off on cruise ships. However, it seems reasonable to provide a free service for medical appliances if it's the bare minimum, with only access to specific health related websites required by that passenger. All social apps blocked. I doubt that it would contravene HIPAA to require passengers to list the necessary website URLs they need for the cruise in advance, and if they don't block everything else, you KNOW a remarkable number of people will suddenly have health issues. :D

Definitely get travel Insurance. Just off Carnival Legend. Hubby woke up feeling pain when he breathed deep. Three trips to the Medical Center (which is very well put together by the way) was over $1600. (Turns out, it was a pulled cartilage in his ribs after going to the ER in Tampa).

We had an issue on a Carnival cruise where several bus loads of passengers on a Carnival excursion were delayed due to traffic and weather. The guide on our bus was in contact with the ship and alerted them that we would be late. If I recall we were about 45 minutes late.

We were in Aruba on a Carnival excursion. Our bus driver backed into another vehicle in the parking lot of a chapel on the tour route. According to the tour guide, the driver and the bus had to wait for insurance inspectors to arrive before the bus could leave. The tour company dispatched another bus to take us back to the ship, but we were about 45 minutes late returning to the pier. Carnival waited for us. I believe there was about 40 of us on that bus.
