Such great information!!! Every passenger is responsible for knowing what they need to travel. I find it hard to believe they did not know they needed a valid passport. We cruise Princess all the time, and, like you said, it is very clear that you need a passport. I don’t know how they could’ve overlooked that! It was clearly their fault!

You are so right about needing a passport. And it's not just that you or someone you're with might be injured and have to go to a hospital. What if you received word that one of your kids had been in an accident back home or your elderly parents are on their deathbed and you need to fly back immediately. Everyone who travels outside of the United States needs to get a passport even if one isn't always required.

Yes. I remember a cruise passenger we met on the crusiecritic message board; her mother-in-law died when we did a transatlantic back in 2007. They found out when we made it to Canada, and our phones worked again, (thankfully the crossing was 3 days since our last port was Ireland) so they flew home from Newfoundland. She said the plane tickets were over $2000 each and cost more than flying to England. She was thankful they had bought insurance.

The story did remind me of a lady we met on an Antarctica cruise who told us how disappointed she was that Celebrity didn't tell her how cold it would be so she didn't take appropriate clothing. Passports are very important. Be sure yours does not expire within six months of sailing. Some locations will not accept them unless they have at least six months before they expire.

Atten Allison: I’m on the Enchanted Princess and there is a rumor it’s our ship and there were at least 100 people not allowed on board. It’s the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe that requires passports for cruise passengers. The Princess website also says you won’t be able to get off the ship.

Hi Alison.. we are in the UK so it’s an island basically.. from birth everywhere you go outside of UK we need to carry our passports.. which means it’s almost an automatic thing for us over here.. before we buy any ticket anywhere we always check dates etc on our passports.. the onus is on us to do so… we do not require this to enter either Scotland or Wales but DO require it to enter Ireland… great video again and looking forwards to out next three booked cruises on Sky and Caribbean Princesses this year… blessings, JohnPops.

I have been on S. American cruises before where many passengers showed up at the port without the required visas. They were all denied boarding even if they said they’d stay onboard at those ports. Mostly seniors who ended up losing their cruise fares. Buyer beware, of course a good TA like yourself helps!

First - congratulations on reaaching 13K subscribers. Now on to 15K. Each of us who travel should take responsibility for what we need to travel, wherever it may be. the only empathy I had for was a lady is Australia who wanted to go on the Seascape transatlantic, maiden voyage. Her passport renewal got backed up since July. The cruise was November 19, 2022. MSC was kind to her though and gave her a credit on the cruise. Her airline did too since it was not her fault.

We have 2 cruises coming up in 2023 and the first thing I did after booking them was to check all of our passports to make sure that we had at least 6 months post cruise on them. It's really easy for people to blame others when they make a big mistake and it's irresponsible of the news station to not do their job and get the facts. H! I’m an Elite Princess member. I recently booked 7 cabins under a group booking. It was a short 4 day San Francisco to San Francisco cruise with only one stop in Ensenada. Talking and confirming with Princess several times as I advised them we have one person in our group of 17 whose passport was being expedited for renewal but there was delays so we may not get the renewed passport in time. I spoke with Princess several times who advised that the passport would not be necessary for this cruise. I was told it was a cruise less than 7 days and it was from a US port to US port with only one stop. When we arrived to embark we were told that the passport was necessary or a birth certificate. You mentioned a certified birth certificate was needed but that was not true. While we in port they were asking us if we had a picture of the birth certificate on our phone and that would be acceptable. The person only had a gold star on their DL ID and their military Veteran ID and a copy of their expired passport but that was not sufficient. He went with his family and took an UBER back home about 1 1/2 away to get a copy of the birth certificate. It was not certified and Princess accepted it. I always double check and triple check. I even noted the names of the people and day and times I spoke with them. If I confirmed with Princess at least 5 or 6 times do I not take what they are telling as correct?

Also there was confusion amongst the staff at embarkation because they mentioned Carnival Corp who owns Princess does not require it for a close loop cruise going to and from a US to US port with only one stop in Ensenada/Baja. I also told them that when I spoke with Princess I reviewed with them the Travel Documents required section in their website under Pre Cruise FAQ. I said Mexico is requiring a passport and the Princess rep said Ensenada is also considered under Baja California and no passport required. Conflicting statements from the reps on the phone to the staff at embarkation. I’m a seasoned cruiser, primarily cruising with Princess and I spent hours with them on this booking confirming and reconfirming everything from the documents required to our dinner reservations up to our sailing date. I do not know how much more double checking I could have done. I will say that Princess made every effort to wait for my guest to come back with a copy of the birth certificate. They said there was weather issues so they would delay sailing for an hour so that helped in getting my guest back in time amongst all the traffic with the not certified copy of the birth certificate. He did end up making it with his family for the cruise.

If you are not American or Canadian, you need a VISA for Alaska cruises. I remember one man was upset that his wife, who born in Mexico and not naturalized US citizen, was not allowed to board ship since she had not gotten a VISA as the ship had a port in Vicotria, B. C., Canada. I understand Americans need a VISA for mainland Europe but we did not need it for our British Isles cruise, last summer, but I understand you do for anywhere in mainland Europe.

When we went on a Princess cruise they ask you to enter your passport information and if it is expires within 6 months it does not let you enter any more information so you know something is wrong.

I hate to be technical but your original birth certificate is stored at your county of birth. You can obtain a certified copy from your county of birth - this is what you need. When I was a travel agent one of my first questions was WHEN DOES YOUR PASSPORT EXPIRE??? Thanks for the FACTUAL news!

Sorry, I hate to be technical but that's not true. Here in NYC, no matter the county you were born in, you can only get a certified copy in Manhattan or you can order it online through Albany. The individual counties in N Y City do not provide this service.

The problem is that the cruise line tells you one thing and the port says another, Royal said birth certificate or passport at check in and when you arrive at the port they tell your passport only. No where in my document trip papers said a passport only ship

Two comments: 1) You are mostly singing to the choir - experienced travelers. However, there is a portion of society who do not believe that they have to do what they are told no matter how many times it is in the terms and conditions. 2) When we had responsible travel journalists like Chris Elliott, they would investigate BEFORE writing an article. Nowadays, journalists are among the most ignorant beings regarding business. If they hear a complaint about a business, they jump on it without doing the research.

I’ve had a passport book off and on in my life starting in 1978. I would say don’t ever leave the United States without one. No one knows what’s going to happen except god all mighty, so use sense when debating it. If you go off into another country a passport book and some money 😂 can get you back to the United States easily. A birth certificate or even a passport card can not because airports any where outside the USA will not allow you to board a plane without a valid passport. Ignorance is not an excuse for you not to be prepared when leaving the good ‘old U.S.A.

I heard that the people called & were told they didn't need it on that cruise. Of course, that's 2nd hand info cuz I was on a Princess cruise with no news for 17 days! Still...just reading the website tells you a passport is needed for all cruises. I seem to remember that in recent years, they made 1 mandatory for even driving from the US to Canada & Mexico,which up til then only required a driver's license. I fail to believe someone from Princess would say you don't need it. Research, research, research before every cruise! We don't know if masks & tests will be back some day, so you need to know stuff. Please everyone, check the website of your line...all have a section that talks about what to know b4 you go. 1 thing we witnessed that bears mentioning: if you book a cruise for a honeymoon, book in whatever name is on the passport you have at the time of booking. Number must match name, unless you have the marriage license with you. Otherwise, wait to go til you get a new passport, or you won't board. Just bring marriage license with you if in doubt...the 1 with the raised seal. This couple booked with her married name, but had a maiden name passport. Luckily, someone at home could go get the marriage license & fax it in. They accepted the photocopy in this case. They got on, but not til about 3:30. And wow, that got long winded...sorry. But you can never have things stressed enough when your vacation is on the line. We still take vaccine cards, even tho not required. Better safe than sorry.

I’m sorry but the couple should have checked that their passports before they booked the cruise. The passport actually expires 6 months before the date on the passport. It’s not the cruise line’s responsibility to make sure theirs is valid. We had that issue this past year. We had to renew ours for a July 2022 cruise because they were expiring in December. We got them in renewed in April.

Just got our passports renewed for our cruise in March. Also have a valid passport card that could be used for the Caribbean but did not feel good about it in case one of us got sick and had to fly home. Passport cards are only good for cruising and not flying back to the U.S.

What we got caught up with was the Canadian PR card and I would encourage everyone to obtain an Esta as not clear on website as it says you MAY need one. It even has UK listed as a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program. My husband had all his Vaccinstion requirents, his Cdn PR card and his UK passport but could not board plane as he had to pay and wait for an Esta online. I hsd to leave and travel on my own. He caught a flight on a different airline two hours later showed his PR card and passport. Was NOT asked for an Esta. Went through USA customs no prob. We are out of pocket for the cost of two airplane tickets. Thank goodness we booked flights two days before Panama cruise.

Many countries won't allow you to enter if you have less than 6 months on your passport let alone expired. It's your responsibility to ensure that your passport is current not the cruise companies

I believe it's about a $10,000 per person fine if the cruise line would not catch that passport and had taken the person onboard. Yeah they are not going to make that mistake. I worked for an internal airline and we always checked and double checked when unsure about a passengers documents.

A passport book isn't necessarily required, depending on where you're traveling. US Passport cards are specifically made for "land-border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda" according to the US State Dept. website. I've used my passport card and my Nexus card (trusted traveler program between the US and Canada) for sea port entry.

It is only slightly cheaper than a passport for the whole world. If you decide to go to England or France, you will need to get a new passport and no discount for what you paid on that. I would only get that if I lived in a border state like Maine or Montana and had family in Canada and knew I would not want to travel overseas.

Here is my problem with the woman being interviewed by CBS news and making a false public statement about Princess Cruise line's passport documentation regulation. Having spoken with several Princess Cruise Reps, they have all confirmed which documents that are needed to travel to and from foreign countries. Several Princess cruise consultants whom I have spoken with have all stated that they strongly recommend acquiring a passport and bringing with you on your cruise, many went on to state that this is a requirement by international government entities.

I panicked and told my daughter, son In law and Grandson that they had to get passports even though we are taking them on a closed loop cruise. We don’t want to take any chances!!! We also had to update ours early because we weren’t sure we would get ours back in time with that 6 month window, it’s maddening because of this you really only get 9 years, not 10 due to how long it takes to renew, and that weird rule with 6 months still available. Oh well.

Only need passport when on boarding from San Francisco, then I put my passport in the safe of my cabin, I carry my medallion with my CADL to port and return to ship. No one check my passport when back to San Francisco. Next time when I renew my passport, I will be apply the passport ID card.

When you leave the cruise ship, do you take your actual passport book or do you take a photocopy? Or if you have the book and the card would you recommend leaving the book on the ship and take the card? I have always, always travel with my passport book but I’ve had many say that that’s not a great idea in case it is stolen and that since I have the card, I should just travel off ship with the card.

Sandy, that is what I did on my last cruise from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera, used my passport card to get on board and kept with me in ports, but had my passport book in the safe just in case I had to fly.

We have read, and been told by cruise personnel, to leave your passport in your room safe unless specifically told to bring it. Use other gov't-issued ID (driver's license) as well as cruise card/medallion to get off and reboard the ship. If an emergency occurs that you need to stay ashore, they will retrieve your passport and get it to the Port Authority/Representative, to get to you.

A first time passport seems like a lot of money to some people. Just like tips, include in your travel budget. But it is for 10 years so only about $15 a year. A very necessary document on a cruise as Allison says if you have to separate from the ship and then have to get home.

Yes, Americans do not need a passport for Caribbean, but they do need an official birth certificate. Duh, how stupid can people be. If you have an official birth certificate you can get by with expired passport.

However, if her cruise went to Columbia, she would need a passport. Bahamas and Mexico you can get by with official birth certificate. Columbia is different as it is in South America.

I knew an older couple traveling w us on a tour bus for a cruise leaving out of Fort Lauderdale. They had grabbed out of a drawer their expired passports. (They had new but grabbed the wrong ones.) Unfortunately. the Cruise line would not relent, and this older couple had to rent a car and travel 9 hours back home. Another story, an older couple was traveling with us on a tour bus on a different cruise, and the wife felt ill 6 hours down the road. They had to rent a car and travel back home. Unfortunately, they did not have trip insurance.

It's not just Alaska and Mexico. Birth certificates are fine for all closed loop cruises , including the carribean. Be sure to have your facts straight before you make a video !

Thank you for reporting accurately that the travelers were responsible for showing up without valid passports. Only an idiot would rely on "someone said" on the phone whether that someone was a TA or a cruise line rep or even think that an expired passport would be "good enough." Princess told them IN WRITING that they needed a valid passport (it is on the cruise contract). They could also have verified on the government web sites of the countries they'd be visiting or re-entering. Hopefully they have the RealID driver's license or they won't be able to get on a plane to fly home either!

The local CBS reporter we saw was sensational and did not demonstrate any validation of either the basic facts or the specific facts. We have no idea what transpired and this reporter showed no investigative skills.

Everything the families reported could be true, but the reporter did not make their case. Perhaps they had bad advice from customer service, but the story was just sensationalized.

Princess makes it so easy to know what documents you need on the web site and needing a passport is even on the cruise contract. But I do not doubt that someone from Princess customer service told them an expired passport was ok. Princess needs to get their customer service back to how it was before covid, I never had a problem with it then. No doubt that out sourcing customer service is saving them money but not taking care of their customers.
