as a Agent/cruise specialist I tell people it's an individual preference. I personally love inside rooms, we've done balcony and don't use use it enough to care. The room isn't what makes the cruise for me. just my personal opinion.

When we cruised the NCL Sun some years back we booked an oceanview, but the upsell fairy paid us a visit so that we could upgrade to balcony for (I think) $150. Worth every penny to me. Next time we cruise I'd like to get another balcony, but it seems like the difference between that and oceanview is anywhere from $400 to $700 more when we want to cruise. But I'll settle for an interior. An LED night light does very well.

My cousin and I cruise once every summer and we ONLY cruise if we can get a balcony. We like to spend some time in our cabin throughout the day, so it's nice to come back after lunch or something and just relax a bit outside in privacy. Also, it's nice to be on the balcony while the other is getting ready for dinner. We think it's a nice oasis/vacation away from vacation, if that makes any sense lol.

I cruised for many years in an inside cabin for months at a time. I always requested an ocean-view or a balcony room, but the US Navy said it was not going to happen. :) Butt seriously, I do not go on shore sailor cruises often, so when I do I usually get a balcony just to see how the other side lives. If I found myself going on multiple cruises every year or two, I would take an inside cabin (hope for free upgrades) and save up for a balcony for the cruises that have a view, like Alaska or Norway.

One issue that seems to be overlooked with "inside" cabins, is the effect on people with claustrophobia.
@67jaffa7 жыл бұрын
We had a balcony cabin once on Royal Caribbean, and the one thing I REALLY wanted to do was to leave the balcony door open all night to get the tropical breezes and hear the ocean. What Morgan doesn't mention here, is that if you leave the balcony door open, it creates a kind of vapor lock in the hallway outside your room and the occupants of the rooms next to you can't get their doors open! So the next thing is you get the room steward banging on your cabin door to tell you that you have to keep the balcony door closed at all times! And how much did we really use the balcony? Not much at all. Not worth the extra price, we will stay with the inside cabins.
@mckenna86637 жыл бұрын
Huh! We had a balcony once - and we slept with the door and curtains open each night. Who knew.

Inside cabin means lower down in the ship which means less rocking. A good option for those who get seasick. I enjoyed Ocean View because my internal clock needs to know when it is actually getting light outside. We are about to go on our first cruise with a balcony. I'm super excited!
@CShivery6 жыл бұрын
Our first cruise was an inside cabin on one of the top (Promenade, I think) decks. Cheap, but you could hear the engines all night. Super duper dark. We were never in the room. We next did a balcony. We hung out on the balcony all week. Definitely worth the price, even though our neighbors constantly smoked, even though they weren't supposed to.
@dbtrips36255 жыл бұрын
I host an annual group cruise; and we always have Oceanview cabins. We want the natural light, but have no interest in walking out onto a balcony. So those cabins work best for us. I even enjoy watching the waves at night from my window. The lights of the ship illuminate them so well; and there are usually other ships in the distance, which I find interesting to watch, as we get closer or farther apart.

We got an ocean view for our 11 day Alaska cruise... all balconies were sold out and it was either interior or ocean view. And only $100 more for the OV. I feel like the OV rooms on carnival are fairly large inside compared to other cruise lines. Worth it to me. 🙂
@CJWJR7 жыл бұрын
I would go for a room with an ocean view window. They're a little larger than the interior rooms, AND have natural light coming in from the window. Why pay for a balcony room when you're not going to be in the room all that much anyway? Furthermore, it's not so much about what KIND of room you book as it is WHERE on board you book a room. In my experience, I have found that the higher up and/or farther forward or aft your room is the greater you can tell the movement of the ship, especially during rough seas. Tip: book a room that is low and in the middle of the boat to help alleviate motion sickness. Also, when picking a room take into consideration its surroundings: is it beneath or beside a loud night club, or is it above the theater's stage, which was the case on my last cruise. It pays to scope out the layout of the ship online before you book.

Our first cruise we booked an inside cabin and I’ll never do it again! My husband had a panic attack the first night. I’m claustrophobic and, again, the inside cabin is too claustrophobic for me. The next cabin was an outside cabin and it was nice, even though it was a small room, having the window did not feel as “coffin like” as the inside rooms do. Once we made the jump to the balcony, there was such a HUGE difference in the rooms, the ambience, etc. that now all we book is the balcony rooms. We LOVE to begin, and end, our days on the balcony either drinking coffee (in the morning), or drink some herbal tea (in the evening) and listen to the ocean. There are some nights where we will prop the door open (sshhhh) all night and sleep listening to the ocean. I agree with some of the comments that once you get to the balcony level there is no going back!
@bjpatton90857 жыл бұрын
really is a preference. I like being able to go back to room for a nap on interior and can sleep for 3 hrs because of lack of light. However I will always prefer ocean balcony. nothing better than sitting on your balcony in your bath robe and having juice, coffee, and a fresh fruit plate delivered to your room. Thats the way to wake up. Especially in a new port.

Sharing a closet-sized cabin with a friend or family member for a 7-day cruise would irritate me. Plus, I have heard that cruises are known for long lines at the restaurants, buffets, theaters and shows not to mention the hoards of people around the pool, bars and outside deck activities. I think it's worth the money to get a slightly larger cabin with a balcony. It would be nice to have a room comfortable enough to relax in, on those days when the ship is at sea and times when you don't want to deal with the seemingly never-ending crowds of people.

Another reason someone may spend alot of time in their cabin, is if they are a introvert. And need to hide away from the crowds.... As for the view from a window/balcony. Should have had the lights OFF. Once your eyes have adjusted. There is alot in its own way to see. Like the stars. When I took my first cruise. I personally went over the floor plan and told the person who handled my cruise arrangements. on what room I wanted. I also booked early enough so I could get the room I had asked for. Which was a balcony one.

One big difference to consider when booking a cabin is how far above the waterline it is. If you pick a higher cabin you will feel the ships rock. That could be a good and or bad thing depending on you as a person, how easily you may get sick, the chance of running into bad weather and if you want to get "rocked" to sleep. Where as the lower decks and cabins wont really feel it as much if at all.

I feel the same. My dad (for several years) would splurge and take my two brothers, their wives, and I on a yearly cruise. (My one brother and sister-in-law didn't want to vacation without their 2 young boys, so they brought them. I wasn't going to have my dad have to pay for 2 travelers in one room when it was just me - so in a sense, my grown daughter took the place of wasted money.) The thing is he wanted it to be even...so whoever's room cost the most was what he paid for the others' rooms. My one brother and his wife stay in a balcony room. My brother and his family stayed in an inside cabin (with the kids, I think their cost was the most). And my daughter and I stayed in an inside cabin next to them. I got the best end of the deal since "making it even" gave me the money to pay for the flights there and back (which was on us). - - Interior cabins were just perfect. I only was there to sleep and shower. I'm not an in-the-room type of traveler.

I love the ocean view because the lapping of the waves hitting the window is just the best (for me). And the sounds with the gentle movement of the ship taps into my yoga breathing without meaning to, causing me to gently drift away. And I sleep without thought or dreams and the yoga breathing continues on it's own throughout the night. I wake up slowly and gently in the morning with my whole mind and body relaxed. I don't drink alcohol or use sleep aids. It's just me and the ocean. It was a very happy bonus and surprise on my first cruise. I wondered if it would be like that on my second cruise, and it was! Here's hoping for #3.

I totally get why some people will pick an inside cabin. The cost savings is substantial. Plus some people spend a majority of their time in the bar/pool areas, social areas, or at the various ports. For my husband and I, a balcony is the only way to go. We spend probably 50 percent of our free time in our cabin. We truly enjoy our private balcony space. The social time is great and we have met some very lovely and interesting people but in the end our cruise vacations are our time to decompress from our busy lives.

Had inside cabin once and never again. Waking up and wondering what time it is!? Not very funny!The porthole at least gives you an impression.. has the sun gone up yet or not!? But balconies is the best.. also inside balconies is nice, you get the fresh air, you can see what is going on , on the boardwalk (like even watch the aqua theater show on Oasis class on some) or listen to chirping fake birds on the Central Park inside balconies.. quite relaxing actually. For the amount of time spent in the cabin, that is quite personal I think, we love our afternoon naps, like just after a half day excursion but before dinner .. Also for inside outside (royal promenade staterooms), get the Ben & Jerry stateroom on some of the Freedom class and get ice cream discounts. :)

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the balcony and having a drink at night. I never knew of any of my friends that paid for a room with a window. They were always upgraded to it if they had it. I would never stay in an inside room but if you plan on going to the clubs at night and just need a bed to crash on, that’s great for that.

I like the OV, but we only upgrade if it's inexpensive. It's nice seeing the ocean in the morning, or port of call. We've only done a promenade inside, but it will be interesting to see if we notice the difference on the real deal. Our upcoming Carnival repo was initially $800 inside, $1,100 balcony, for 2 weeks. We chose the latter, No brainer right? Now it is $2,400 for an inside, with twice the port fees. Bookings went nuts once they added a partial Panama Canal transit.

I really think it's up to what type of cruiser you are.....I love shore excursions and am only on the ship for food, drink, pool and sauna, massages....the room is simply a place to wash up and sleep. I'm definitely the more active and interactive type. However my older and more relaxed family members get balcony cabins because they spend most their time on the ship and they interact less with the ship, for them it's about eating and drinking with ocean vistas on a balcony. The only down side to an interior is it can smell bad if someone uses the bathroom( if you get what I mean) but even then that isn't every case every time.

In 2013ish I was on the ecstasy cruise ship............. it broke down. It was only about 7 minuets, which incase you were wondering is just enough to make it on the news! We had just gotten back from Atlantis and we were exhausted, so we took a quick nap in our windowless room. We woke up to someone knocking on our door and opening it! Yep I said opening it! The locks stop working once the electricity goes out. We were NOT prepared at all. Luckily the man had a flashlight. IF YOU PLAN ON STAYING IN A WINDOWLESS ROOM BRING A FLASH LIGHT! The chance of your ship loosing power are slim to none, but please learn from my mistake.Take a minuet to say hello to your neighbor. It's good to have someone know that you're there. I would have slept through everything without mine. Also- as soon as I went on the top deck, everyone looked as if nothing had happened. It was a very strange experience.

BlaqQtee I’m getting nervous about my first cruise & it isn’t until April 2019. I have never cruised before but my sister In Law did & she booked us inside rooms, she said you don’t spend time in the room so it doesn’t pay to get the more pricey rooms & now I’m thinking I may do better in a balcony room/ocean view room. I think it is personal preference. I’ve been doing plenty of research & yeah I seen the video where the captain abandoned his own ship before guest, & he didn’t tell them they were taking on water either. Maybe I shouldn’t be seeing all that but I want to be prepared & alert of everything. Any other tips? What to bring, what not to bring etc?. Thanks :)

They have live videos also, and they tell you what time the stream live video will be, and the topic of that particular video...they have a list on Amazon of some things to buy for your cruise...I just ordered a passport carrier, to put our passports in, but not from their list...I ordered the red vintage "villini leather, 'RFID blocking', US Passport holder cover, id card wallet travel case" on amazon. Yesss buy passports if you can, I also make copies of my husband and my passports, Driver's license, birth certificates, and I keep them in my purse and I lock up our original passports in the room safe. So if we get left from the ship in port by accident, we have those copied documents with us, and from someone's KZbin video they said we were supposed to leave the originals in the room ship lock safe and keep the copies with us! And buy you some sea sickness meds...I bought ginger gum, and 24 hour dramamine motion pills. Plus they have risk bands for motion sickness, and and little round patches you put behind your ear or on your stomach. I never get sea sick but I always bring it cause you never know...I buy all types of meds from the dollar store, cold meds, antacids, antibacterial individual wipes for our hands, so I bring them in my long strap small purse to wipe our hands again...right before we eat after touching menu's...or after sitting down to eat after fixing my plate from the buffet line, even though they give you the gel sanitizer when you walk into the food areas, girl I am just a germ phobic too! Lol. I bought the cleaning wipes, "Clorox healthcare hydrogen peroxide wipes", Sherri from CruiseTipsTv has on their Amazon page, to wipe down my room when I first go into the room. I wipe down from the remote control, to door knobs etc. and everything in between! Those wipes kill the Norovirus and much more! BUT BUY AND WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES, WHEN YOU ARE CLEANING WITH THEM!...THEY ARE NOT FOR HAND OR SKIN SANITIZING, OR SKIN CONTACT! I buy other meds and stuff incase we get sick because they are sooo expensive on the cruise ship! I'm always trying to be prepared, and bring it on my carry on bag... also pepto bismol, beano, band-Aids! Our dollar store carry alot of these. Contact a travel agent you should be able to up grade to a ocean view cabin for the up charge! It is so worth it! Lower room cabins and in the middle of the ship are less prone for sea sickness they say... but everyone Is different. And you may not even get sick like me...but good to be prepared! Let me know how you like Sherri and her husband from CRUISETIPSTV Ask them anything...they'll help🤗 be safe and enjoy your cruise!🥂🍾🛳And if you have to fly to get to your cruise ship...never fly the same day of your cruise...you could miss your cruise if your flight is delayed, get a hotel room over night.🙂

Agree with you. I personally want to go for a balcony cabin on my first cruise as that is part of the experience for me. I can't think of anything nicer than to wake up and have my first coffee of the day sitting on my balcony with a beautiful view of the ocean. Lovely. I also agree if I wanted to save money and for some strange reason not choose a balcony, I would go for inside as having a small window to the outside would probably frustrate me and would cost more. You make sense and you also make me smile :)

Definitely blabbering, but entertaining. As someone who made certain to book at least an Oceanview this time, I get your point, and will probably change my strategy next time, either settling for an interior cabin, or a balcony guarantee. I've already decided that if my upgrade bid for a balcony or mini-suite is accepted, I would be happier, even if I end up with an "obstructed view”. Having the ability to open that door to step outside (even on a skinny balcony) would be a definite premium for my spirit. Cheers!

Not necessarily on older/remodeled carnival ships. I stayed in an inside cabin on deck 7 of the carnival Fantasy on a cruise back in 2014, and the following summer, I stayed just around the hall in a window cabin. Supposedly the windows/outside cabin was an upgrade. But, the outside/window cabin on the same floor was certainly smaller than the inside cabin. Not to mention, the window cabin was at the very end of the hallway, and we got a lot of noise from the things on the outside of the ship.

The largest portion of the time I am in the cabin... my eyes are closed. Balcony, Window, Not...I wouldn't notice. If you go on vacation to be in the room - sure, get a nice room. Add a window and balcony if you like. But I am not going on a cruise for the room...I'm there for the entertainment, the sun and the breezes (both of which are free on deck - when my eyes are open), and the experiences. So.. the extra savings pays for my flights and a few extra experiences that I WILL remember.
@BlueWaterLady8 жыл бұрын
I usually book an Ocean View. If the cruise line is going to upgrade you, usually it will upgrade one category. Depending on your OV class, that could be another Ocean View with a picture window or.... the coveted BALCONY. Another good tip is, as the day of your sailing approaches, check your cruise line's pricing for that sailing to see if the balcony price has come down to almost what you paid for your category cabin. Then you can call whomever you booked with (travel agent or cruise line) and try to negotiate an upgrade for whatever is the difference.

We were at the aft end, so we had a decent view of the Boardwalk (for people watching), the Aquatheater, and the water behind the ship. For inside cabins on Royal Caribbean, I prefer Promenade cabins because they let in some light so you're not in the pitch black like you described. Plus, you get the bonus of people watching there, too, if you like that sort of thing.

@mckenna86637 жыл бұрын
The thing that turned me off of the Broadwalk or Central Park balconies was not the sound or lights coming from the activities below (and with the videos I have seen, it can get pretty noisy with the balcony door open)... it was the fact that you are looking out at everyone else's balconies/rooms across the way (and they are looking into yours). It's like going to New York and having a view of the apartment building across the alley. Considering how much you are paying for an inside balcony (as opposed to an inside cabin), I'd go just a little higher and be on the outside of the boat.
