Cruise Ship overhauling 260 METRE VISION CLASS - CINEMATIC TIMELAPSE 4K - Marella Discovery

After it was bought by TUI Cruises, the vessel originally known by the name "Splendour of the Seas" gets a general overhaul, repaint and is named to "TUI Discovery". Works are being carried out in 2017 on the Navantia Shipyard in Cádiz - Spain.

I saw a similar KZbin video of an airliner being repainted. They stripped the old coat off before repainting a new one because of the total weight a coat of paint adds to an airliner!

I like how they went to the bother of cutting out the hull plating where the original name was welded on and replaced it with smooth plating. Most companies that buy used ships don't seem to bother with that! They just paint over the lettering in the hull colour and hope no one notices!

Well if they don’t replace it then the original name is still visible for example carnival cruise line fantasy class ships used to not have carnival in the name used to just be fantasy and ecstasy but after some you time it changed to carnival fantasy and carnival ecstasy and you can still see that on the ships still in the fleet

How do they paint the very bottom of the ship? Do they have to lift the boat up?

I think they move every support one by one and paint the areas.

The ship has 1st and 2nd docking positions , so when ship comes in next time , she will sit one full dock block forward or aft , so what couldn't be got at first time will be next time around. Hope that's helped .☺️

@@boxhawk5070 The letters are typically welded on. The amount of grinding (and heat generated by the grinding) will leave a less than perfect result. I've seen it done both ways, replacing the steel gives a better result. There may have also been other factors involved, such as needing to replace machinery on that deck that required an opening.

Great video, but I was amazed that after they had stripped the paint off, the raw metal had gone quite rusty and they just painted straight over it!! The new paint won't last long at all. They should have actually stripped small sections at a time and then primed and painted it until the whole ship was redone, and then do one final top coat over all the pre-prepared areas. You' should never ever paint over rusty Steel.

Yes you can paint over lightly oxidized metal. The primer is specially made to bond to the metal through the light oxidation layer. Heavy rust is removed, but the light oxidation is not a problem. In fact, the paint will stop the corrosion.
