Remember at some point you might end up facing a Judge, explaining to the judge that you both loudly racked a round and gave verbal notice will make it clear you weren't arranging an ambush. (you should also avoid tricking out your firearms with punisher skulls and such. Don't give the judge any reason to believe you've spent your life secretly hoping for the chance to legally murder the first "dirtbag" to give you an excuse). Self defense isn't about killing bad guys, it's about keeping bad guys from killing you.

This is the best comment on the video. Bantamdude Rodriguez's comment is the most backwards and wrong. Stats show that minorities are safer from white people in all cases than whites are from minorities. The NEWS lies about it because that's what lefties do.

@@KLP99 I think you misunderstood the Bantamdude. He's not talking about crime perpetrated by minorities or whites. He's just saying minorities have a more difficult road through the legal system; if a minority pulls the trigger in self-defense, he's more likely to be charged with murder than a white dude.

It drives me nuts to hear the internet commandos sound excited about "getting to" shoot an intruder....... man, I don't like the hassle of traffic tickets or the work of cleaning up spilled pizza. I'd definitely not enjoy civil court as someone tries to sue me because " their baby was murdered" ( never mind that he had kicked in my door)...... or having to clean up my home after someone bled out on my rug and every branch of local law enforcement had walked through.

+theBarzeen , You got that right. Every bullet you let fly has a lawyer attached to it. I know only one person that has had to use his weapon in self defense. The shooting was declared justified. It still cost him $11.000 in lawyer fees. If a crazed madman is chopping through my front door with an ax, i'm grabbing my gun and cell phone and heading out the back door while calling 911. My city has a response time of around 90 seconds. If the cops shoot him, that's on their dime.

The time a spring is under compression does not dictate how quickly it will fatigue. They fatigue by the number of cycles they are compressed and the speed at which they are compressed. The faster and more often you compress a spring, the faster it will fatigue. Sincerely, An engineer

I don't think the old wives' tale about springs losing their strength after being compressed for a while will ever die. I've been hearing that one ever since I picked up my first rifle in 1975 and I'm still hearing it, never mind the numerous studies that have come out showing it to be false. I have a Beretta 92FS with magazines that are 27 years old, they've been loaded 24/7 for all that time and as of last week when I took the pistol to the range they're still functioning just fine.

@scooter2161 4 жыл бұрын
@Avid Smoke One can't just make a general statement on either side of this argument. You could choose a spring for a magazine that will function for basically eternity without ever hitting failure, or you could choose a spring that would work for maybe 10 cycles tops. If whoever is designing the magazine does their homework, they will implement a spring that works virtually forever. The spring would always be in elastic deformation ranges and never hit plastic deformation. Cycling the spring will change the shape of the elastic deformation curve slightly, but it will eventually hit a point where cycles will not affect this curve. This is why brand new magazines always seem tighter than one that's been used, even a few times. The materials engineer who chose the spring knew it would have a "break in" period and they design the magazine to still work once the spring hits this "level off". You are correct that springs under load will eventually reorganize their structure and lose some effectiveness, but this is over extremely long times (like 30-50 years for any noticeable changes). So, these Vietnam War veterans will likely tell me what you said and they won't be lying, but not because all magazine springs do this, just theirs happened to due to poor engineering and spring choice, and likely cheap budgets at the time. Also, anyone who takes a spring and pulls it so far that when they let go it makes it longer and therefore more "springy" is actually doing inelastic deformation (permanent damage) to the spring.

The 870P in my patrol car is 24 years old. 17 years ago we cut the bbl of our shotguns to 14 inches and added Wilson plus one extensions and springs. They’re been loaded 24/7 with 5 rounds in the magazine for 17 years. The magazine spring still works great. If you’re worried they’re less than ten bucks. Replace them every few years. Down loading to 4 rounds is foolish. For us cruiser ready is an empty chamber with the slide locked and the safety on.

If the department did it, and they are the possessor, it would not be illegal. If he personally did it, as long as the ATF tax stamp is paid and approved, it also would be perfectly legal. Considering he said “we,” those are probably department modified and issued shotguns.

When doing your pre-shift equipment inspection we would check the condition of the tape - if broken we would swap out the shotgun for another in our armory.

Lucky Gunner Ammo great video and common sense. In the U.K, you need a license to have shotguns. Those who have licenses have to keep the guns locked away - 6 month jail sentence if they don't. So understanding the very different system in the US, I was so impressed. Too many have a round in the chamber - and don't appreciate the safety issue when dropped or knocked - particularly if you have kids. Great video. Thank you.

Absolutely good advice, folks! I'm a retired, boot tough ol' cop. I have a shot gun AT THE READY in my home. Semi-auto, 4+1, safety off, bolt unlocked, 6 extra rounds on the stock. Folks, if I need more rounds than that, I'm a dead man in a major fire fight. Trust me, for home defense, what I have is plenty. PLENTY! Note worthy: I have no kids in my home, it's my wife and I only, she shoots, too and she understands going after the bad guys is my job. I highly recommend your shotgun in the condition this KZbinr suggests. And if you've been drinking, don't fuck with it!!!

I like everything you mentioned. Loaded is only for no children in house hold. Children play with things some can get thing you think are out of reach. Being unchambered cuts down on them being shot. I've since moved, but at last resident had several people try to get in, just the sound of my shot gun being loaded scared them off both times. I never had to say a word. It does work.

Good information over all, with the exception of 2:00 where you advocate leaving mag tube downloaded by 1 to help spring life. Springs do not weaken from remaining under load, they weaken from being placed under load then relieved of load repeatedly. Essentially, you’re just taking a round away from yourself.

As a retired detective and a NRA home defense coach, your suggestions and ideas are spot on. Let me add one thought. Racking a round loudly for a suspect to see or hear will reduce your chances of having to fire by 80 percent. Every time I racked a round in the field the suspect stopped dead in his tracts. And yes never ever store your shotgun with a round loaded. Experience has shown that your going to rack your shotgun for peace of mind. And now your down one round but your brain believes you have four or seven rounds loaded.

home defense shotgun users be advised, you may get "shell compression" if you keep the same shells loaded in the magazine tube for too a long time. They WILL become squashed down and oversized, and unable to cycle thru the action. This is especially important if you're using imported shotgun shells. In my experience the clear hulls with steel base are typically the weakest. S&B and Wolf have the softest and weakest plastic hulls of the ones I've handled

@LuckyGunner
@LuckyGunner 8 жыл бұрын
+orda woodward Changing the springs every year or two is a good alternative, but not something most shotgun owners are realistically going to do. I am not bothered by the capacity issue. I don't view the shotgun as a first line of defense... that role is for the handgun, which is almost always within arm's reach in my home. The shotgun is for "bunker defense" when there is prior warning of a threat that is potentially near but not imminent. In those cases, it's not an issue to take the extra 2 seconds to chamber and top off the shotgun. Generally, if I have time to retrieve the shotgun from where it is stored, I have time to top it off.
@DEATH_TO_TYRANTS
@DEATH_TO_TYRANTS 8 жыл бұрын
Lucky Gunner Ammo I have to agree, for your philosophy of use, this is a good way to store your shotgun. And as far as your average gun owner, they probably won't change their springs regularly. I personally use my shotgun as a first line of defense, and I keep it loaded with one in the chamber (8+1) And I do have spare springs for all my defensive weapons, although I don't change them yearly as I suggested before, but rather after X amount of rounds/training. Anyhow, I just found your channel, and I look forward to watching more and figuring out what your channel is all about. Thanks :)

ive read some articles stating racking the slide may cause the intruder to not only know where you are, but in, id say extreme circumstances, cause them to open fire in the direction of the sound or rush towards it, if the person is under the influence, etc. it does kind of make sense, especially depending on the size of your home, where they enter compared to where you are. im on the fence but again its just what ive read elsewhere

Completely agree. Not only are you giving away your position and subjecting yourself to fire, you're giving away the type of firearm you have, and the approximate number of rounds. I prefer fully utilizing the element of surprise, and unleashing fury on the unsuspecting intruder. The surprise element also gives you a second to identify the target before engaging, time you may not have if the intruder knows your position and is ready to fully engage you. No warnings are given out at my house. ID the target, neutralize.
@ShadeSlayer1911

Did you not listen to why that might be a bad idea? More likely than not, you are going to be shooting at somebody who lives at your house who just went up to get some water or something. You're not in a war zone. Not every un-IDed person is trying to kill you. Not every potential intruder is a highly-trained spec ops super soldier looking to murder you and your family as if you have a price on your head. Chances are, it's a dumbass who barely knows how to use a gun thinking he can make a quick buck...assuming he has a gun at all. You don't just get up from bed from hearing a noise, grab your shotgun, and then shoot at whomever might be downstairs. You're more likely going to be killing someone you don't want to than an actual intruder that way. And funny thing is, a lot of these "tacticool commandos" that have your type of mindset also tend to be the types of people who insist on a revolver for carry because "carrying 15 rounds is being paranoid; you're not in a war zone bro!"

This is why you ask them to identify themselves, if they live in or are supposed to be there they probably know you have a gun and will likely know by the tone of your voice that you believe them to possibly be an intruder. If you hear no reply this indicates the chances of it being a family member or friend are low. In low light conditions this is more critical and this is where a good flashlight can save lives, either by allowing you to identify an intruder or a family member faster so you can proceed with the appropriate action.

You, sir, have earned more respect from me than a lot of the youTube cowboys. A responsible gun owner isn't looking for confrontation, they're looking to avoid confrontation. You don't keep a firearm to ambush bad guys, you keep it for safety. If your reasoning for owning a firearm is to kill bad guys, you shouldn't be a firearm owner. If your reasoning for owning a firearm is protection, up to and including using lethal force, than you should. And you need to know the difference.

FuglyStick I disagree. if you chose to come in my home uninvited to steal or do harm , or better yet for any reason you've waved your right to be treated with any type of thoughtfulness or discretion. protecting my family comes first . treating a home intruder respectfully doesn't even cross my mind. if your the kind of person who thinks you shouldn't be harmed for going into a strangers home you're a certain kind of stupid. there will be no racking of the slide, just shots fired until the threat is neutralized. now if you go out in public with this mind set , your gun owner ship should be questioned but not when it comes to my home period.
@logicalwaysprevails7459
@logicalwaysprevails7459 7 жыл бұрын
you also said gun owner do not buy guns for confrontation they are for safety. but if your in my home as a stranger you've brought the confrontation to me and you're making my home unsafe the moment you step trough the door. @FuglyStick
@FuglyStick 7 жыл бұрын
"I believe no gun owner wants confrontation" Then you aren't very familiar with the youTube "operator" community. A distressing percentage of the community is cloaking masturbatory "justice" fantasy in the guise of "safety." They do not speak for gun owners, and are not representative of gun owners. "Protection" may lead to lethal response, but that's different than the mentality of "eliminating bad guys." The distinction isn't always clear, but it is there.
@ronbloomberg

FuglyStick But if you rack your slide and yell "Who's there?" the bad guy will now be the one doing the ambushing! When an intruder is in your home in the middle of the night you don't go searching all thru your house yelling "who's there?" He will simply hide behind the couch and wait to pick you off like JFK. I any of you keyboard commandos would have ever taken a course in home/self defense you would know that.

I enjoyed your video and totally agree with your philosophy. There is some truth as to why police (specialty units excepted) carry pump shotguns (audible deterrent when going into full battery), but that's the "police", not the home defender. For the home defender, that's a misapplication of purpose. That being said, I think one should give an intruder EVERY opportunity to leave before engaging in live fire (racking the shotgun, verbal challenges, throwing the cat at them, etc.) and let them know you're in your home, and you're defending it. Plus, as you stated, it prevents accidents. The goal is to protect yourself and preserve life. If a "bad guy" won't let you accomplish both of those, protecting yourself wins the debate. There's not a domestic situation that can't be resolved with the assistance of a 12 ga. shotgun. And by the way, I love that 14", Magpul dressed 870. Happy trails, tight groups and safety first.

I’ve thought about doing “Cruiser Ready” but for years I’ve gone full ready, hit the safety and it’s a “go”. It’s how I’ve set up my HD shotgun and it’s how I shoot. If I were to change now, I’d just become confused and create problems for myself. I have my set up customized to my situation. I live alone. I know my choke point. I know my concealment. I know my kill zone. I know how to take off my safety. I know 911. Any change to this at this point is going to require a lot of retraining and rethinking. But I do like the concept. This is what I do also. Keeping a round loose in the breach allows you to keep the tube full, and it isn't going to go off by dropping.

Finally some legit advice instead of all these Wannabee pistoleros who advocate all Kinds of unsafe shit.

+Bill Blakely, It's not legit. Its just another man's opinion which I can respect because it appears much thought was given to it. Unlike the idiot comments by wannabe experts like yourself. I just had to say that because of the weight that you believe name calling gives to your opinions. I agree that a chambered shotgun is potentially dangerous due to it not being drop safe. However, storing the shotgun safely is totally within the control of the owner. The shotgun can be stored safely on a rack, in a safe, flat on the floor, or secured by a bungee cord just to name a few options. The response of an intruder to the sound of racking the shotgun, however, is not predictable., and as such, could put the shotgun wielding homeowner in greater danger. Giving a warning so that the intruder has an opportunity to leave is honorable, but it's also foolish to warn a killer that he has to prepare to now kill the deadly threat of the homeowner. Again,... just another man's opinion.

Wolverines Fight sir; I have been a Firearms instructor for a law enforcement agency for over 15 years. I know a lot about firearms safety. I don't speak casually about people So if I verbally degrade someone for teaching unsafe shit...it is for a reason. I have had a lot of education and a lot of training and a whole lot of practical experience. So if you want to screw up and get hurt...go for it. I just hope you don't Teach your folly to others.

+Bill Blakely Why not? I suppose if you're willing to teach your folly, I should teach my folly. First, let's not go over each other's credentials. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, and I could give you my resume, but I could be also just be a pimple face kid feeding you BS on the Internet. Look, it's all opinions based on conjectures and hypothetical scenarios. All I'm saying is this, if you should wake up to hear an intruder in your house, I can still guarantee one thing...that you with your decades of experience, would still know squat about that intruder, especially if it turns out to be a total stranger. Sure, you can be optimistic and rack your shotgun and if (and that's a big if) he's your neighbor's teen kid trying to rip off your gaming console, then yeah, he may hear the racking sound and hightail it out of the house. But, don't fail to mention that the intruder just might be someone more dangerous, someone who may have come armed, or willing to use a knife from your kitchen or grab a nearby blunt object, maybe someone who is a psych job, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and may not be alone, then the action of giving a warning by racking the shotgun can put you and everyone else in the house in greater danger. If you must, and want to warn the intruder, or give a chance for your family member to identify themselves, yell out a warning or shout, 'Is that you son?!' or something like that, either will accomplish your goals without alerting a dangerous threat that you are also armed. It does give away your position but at least it doesn't make an intruder consider you a deadly threat and feel it's necessary to kill you or take a hostage. Now there are those who would say that you've taken away the opportunity for the intruder to leave knowing that you are armed with a shotgun, but in my book given the scenario, it's an opportunity he doesn't deserve if he broke into my house and put me and my family in danger. The bottom line is this. Is keeping your home defense shotgun stored cruiser-ready and rack it when you detect an intruder, good advice? Sure it is, but it's not for everyone. In fact, it may be foolish for others. When do I consider it good advice? Well, let's see. If it's just you and your wife, and you suddenly wake up hearing an intruder in your house. Where's your wife? Oh, she's safe right here next to you. Then sure, it's good advice. Grab the shotgun. Rack it as loud as you can. Yell whatever you want. Guard the door and call 911. ...However,...what if your kids are in another room? You rack your shotgun and then realize, the intruder is closer to your daughter than you are. You suddenly hear her come out of her room, saying, 'Papa, is that you? I thought I heard your shotgun.' Before you know it, she's a hostage and you're stuck holding your shotgun. Is it still good advice to rack the shotgun? Probably not. They are all opposing opinions, but they're also all good advice. What's good for the goose may not be good for gander. Consider your options and decide what will work best for your environment. And, if you can't safely handle or store a loaded shotgun, then for God's sake, just keep the damn thing cruiser ready, or buy a drop safe handgun...at least, until you can learn to safely handle and store a loaded shotgun.

Wolverines Fight you would probably piss your pants and shoot a hole in your overnight guest. If you are so worried about some BS scenario....know this; more hunters by a long shot are killed by Shotguns than any other weapon. Now I am done with your ego driven bullshit...get right or get lost.
