I believe when this ship came out I looked at the floor plan of the cabins, I knew it was designed by someone who thought they would redesign the entire cruise industry. So glad that did not happen. The epic is a one off. No other ship is like it and it’s a complete disaster ncl was supposed to build 3 and they quit halfway the second one. It’s not representative of the fleet but what is representative is that ncl hasn’t cut their losses and trashed this ship.

I've only taken one cruise and it was beautiful and the crew members were fantastic and they work so hard and are away from their loved ones for extended periods of time that they have enough work w/o having to take on matters beyond their control. I thought it was always very sweet when the crew would show pictures of their families when we asked about their own lives. They deserve to be recognized for the work that they do.

My sister and I sailed transatlantic, Barcelona to Miami, in 2012. It was our first and last NCL cruise. This was mainly down to the ridiculous cabin design and the amount of up selling. We have now cruised on several different ships and cruise lines and the Epic remains our worst cruise ever! When we travelled on her things were new and I believe the cabin design had won prizes, though how they managed that I cannot imagine. How NCL can today charge $500 a night for a cabin in that state is criminal. Thank you lads for another great video.

We were on the Epic several years ago and HATED everything about the cabin design. Hated the bathroom, the curved bed, the curved wall…vowed never again! I feel your pain. The good news is that the Epic is one of a kind. The ship was built to a “unique” spec by a French shipyard and after all the negative feedback NCL canceled future orders.

I've never cruised before. I came across your channel awhile ago and was hooked 😁 So now, at 61 years old, I'm saving for a cruise in 2026 to celebrate being in remission from Cancer. I commented on the Epic on your previous post. When Epic was new, they didn’t even have the curtain by the bathroom. It was added about a year later because we folks from the US complained about the see-through doors and opening at the top that revealed all of the smells and sounds to your cabin mates. The rumor was going around that Europeans wouldn’t be as prudish about it as we were. It’s nice to see that you two feel the same way. When we were on her at least it was cleaner and functional because she was still new. We went on it to see the Blue Man Group. I think once they discontinued that show there was no reason to put up with that bathroom. And I was traveling with one of my brothers. As embarrassing as that was, it was still not as bad as it would have been with friends. But you guys were cracking me up while you were showing all of the drawbacks.

I am so pleased to hear you stick up for the crew. I will never understand how these cruise lines delegate so many cabins to the stewards. I always feel so badly for them. This was a real eye opener, what an awful cabin on this cruise, ill-designed, worn out and not clean. I think you are both calling out what needs to be called out. On 2011 when I cruised on the Epic, I actually wrote to Cruise Travel Magazine and titled it “NCL Epic is an epic disappointment “. This is when the ship was new! Whomever designed the cabins should be forced to live in it for 30 days with 3 other strangers! Now it is 1000% worse. Thanks for your posts Ben & David. Always enjoy your KZbin videos. Take care. B

Tip for the laundry bag, I always fold everything as flat as I can to get as much in as possible. The cabin stewards were amazed that my one bag came back as two and a half. I like to get my moneys worth!

Thank you, B&D, for another honest review. This was disappointing, but not surprising. We cruised on the Epic in 2016 and were also mystified by the bizarre cabin layout. It is sad that NCL seems to have given up on maintaining this ship. I'm glad you didn't blame your cabin steward. On our last NCL cruise, our steward admitted that he had to clean 22 cabins every day. Assume a minimum of a half hour to vacuum, change sheets, clean bathroom, etc. and this poor guy was hustling 11 hours a day! I hope Norwegian rolls back the employee workload now that we are out of the pandemic.

We were on the Epic in a balcony stateroom back in 2017 and it’s sad to see that the rooms have not been updated. It was by far, the WORST Room we have ever been in and we have been on 15 cruises. Who wants to sit on the end of the bed to brush their teeth, never mind the whole bathroom layout ! I left a very honest and unfavorable review on Cruise Critic after being on this ship, and saw many other bad reviews of this ship, but obviously none of the NCL executives care. I will never go on this ship again!!

I was coming home sick from cruises, so I decided to be proactive. I now do sanitize all the surfaces when I enter my cabin, and that has worked for my last four cruises. I know that they only have time for superficial cleaning between passengers and a lot of people don’t have the same standards of cleanliness. And I also clean any areas where I am going to store my belongings. I’m don’t think I have OCD, but I don’t want to stop cruising and I have reached the age when getting sick can have dangerous consequences. Happy cruising!

I would use plastic gloves and mask to clean room, I bet storage area never get cleaned. Previous people could put in storage area wet swimsuits forgotten =mildew, baby clothes feces accidents and never cleaned-sanitized why next passengers get sick

I sailed in a balcony on Epic twice pre-pandemic. One was with a friend and she ended up with a stomach bug. Not a great cabin for two, especially if you're not in a couple. The second time was with my now husband. They inexplicably gave us a disability cabin. We felt terrible and asked to swap but they said nobody had requested it. It was great! Very different layout. Lots of room since it was designed for wheelchairs.

You had us in hysterics because we were just as horrified about 8 years ago on the same ship! You at least had light over your sink, my husband cut himself shaving because he couldn’t see - our light was no brighter than a tiny night light! The cabin wasn’t as worn at that point and we had a great time due to the people we met, but it was RIDICULOUS! Someone told us that they had planned to build 2-3 more just like it, but didn’t - thank God!

The sink backsplash reminds me of my grade school bathroom along with that soap dispenser. Unfortunately, it was 50 years ago that I was in grade school. NCL really thought that cabin design through since you can sit on the couch and watch the wardrobe.

I was on the Epic and knew about the the strange design, so I made sure my NCL cruisse consultant booked us a room where the bed was near the balcony and the couch was near the bathroom and entrance. It worked out great and made more sense. So when you walked in past the split bathroom you had your sink, closets couch, desk etc first which created more room and gave you more space for getting ready.

On the newest ships they've put the toilet and shower behind a glass wall even in the studio cabins (which are fine for a solo on a week or less trip). I can't see the studios being very popular now that they've got the solo rates on regular cabins, so I think the next generation won't have them.

Hi Ben and David. I've been looking forward to this video. A friend of mine was on this ship a few years ago. She said it was so bad she would never sail on it again, even if she got it for free. Like you, she hated the layout of the cabin. So glad NCL didnt build another ship with this design. Now to see how much work needs to be done, wow.... The port of Olympia looks like a great place. Especially with no crowds. The NCL Epic is in need of retirement. Or, fix it up and use it for places that need to keep people safe after storm's or earthquakes. I heard this ship was designed for another cruise company who couldn’t pay for it so NCL bought it hence the weird layout which is not an NCL standard. When I sailed on this with my sister we also had the spa so never showered in the room, only in the spa. I cannot believe the condition of the public spaces. Time to dock the Epic and call it a day!

OMG thats horrific 😮 it needs to be totally Stripped in Dry-dock and Remade . Nothing worse than Sewage small🤢to add the smoking ,burning oil . Does surprise me that Norwegian cruse line still let her Sail ,with the huge amount of things that are wrong or needing emergencies attention 🤷‍♀️.yes i get it Money 🤔. I sailed on this ship when it was relatively new. I was with my 2 high school age kids, a boy and a girl. It was miserable in the cabin even when the ship was new. I haven’t been on Norwegian since.

We went on NCL once and must admit that was one trip too many for us. The worst feature was the main buffet restaurant which was absolutely jam-packed. I felt sorry for the poor staff who had to cope with all the complaints 😥🤬☹️

Aside from the Clorox wipes, I think you need to add a black light to your arsenal. It could be entertaining seeing beyond what the naked eye can detect!

Stunned. Shocked. I am so sorry guys. I thought you were on the margaritaville ship! How awful. You have such a loyal following-like me (I cancelled my manicure because I can’t stop watching!🤷‍♀️🤣) and you would think that Norwegian would care that you had this experience. I had a bad experience with customer service on the phone about a year ago inquiring about a cruise. It was so bad, I said nope-I will never cruise with them. Ever. Looking forward to your next video. 38 days till we go on our first Virgin cruise! Love you guys!

Seeing everything wrong in the passenger areas of the ship makes me question what all is wrong in the essential areas of the ship! And they put this ship on one of the most bucket list cruises that most people save their entire lives to go on! Because they know it’s the only way to sell it. Shame on NCL! Just knowing that they would do this to passengers means I will never sail NCL! Ever! Thank you guys For showing the truth to people. You will save so many people from ruining their cruises!

That cabin layout is something else - someone somewhere ok'ed the idea of installing poop curtains and were probably given a raise by NCL executives for their ingenuity. A mind-blowingly awful concept, glad you survived the ordeal. Also, thanks for addressing cruising and its use of plastics. Would love to hear more about this topic from cruisers.

If you look at the overall design of the cabin, you'll see eccentric curves everywhere. When I was on Epic in 2015, even the bed was round! I once watched the steward change the bedding, astonished at how it was done with great extra effort. I guess they eventually figured out that square was more efficient.

I would take pictures of all the issues and send them to the cruise line and demand either a refund or a cruise on 1 of their better ships! The cabin was absolutely disgusting !

I always Put a plastic trash bag inside the paper bag for laundry. Keep it from ripping and you can smash more clothes into the bag

Sorry that was your experience. Seasoned NCL cruisers know to avoid Epic. Some avoid Pride because of its quirkiness. NCL is a really good line with the exception of Epic. Even the older ships have much better. I particularly love the Jewel class for the large showers and Breakaway+ for the Waterfront. I really wish NCL would take the hit and dispose of Epic.

It was a legal dispute between NCL and shipbuilder STX Europe that led to the Epic being the only ship in its class. Originally, NCL ordered 2 ships but due to the dispute, they cancelled the order for the 2nd ship.

The only time I became really ill on a cruise was on Norwegian. The bathroom smelled like vomit. I was miserable. It was very traumatizing.

We are currently on Ruby Princess, which is older than NCL Epic. We have 3 of us in 1 ocean view room and have cruised with 4 in an ocean view. While it’s a tight squeeze, it’s functional for all. I must say, Princess keeps the older ships maintained & clean.
