@ I see what you’re saying. Uncle Tony doesn’t have anything new enough to have that issue. From my experience 2000 year model vehicles don’t run all those systems through a computer, but by 2010 almost all vehicles have at least some subsystems going through a computer. The only thing i see applicable is the instrument panel/ gauges. As far as I know for abs there is no analog systems, so it would still need a computer, but not the ecu.

In the 1990s I spent a lot of time in the remote bush in northern Western Australia visiting Aboriginal Communities. I used roads that maybe had a car a week so I carried a lot of water and analog ignition parts and other essential bits. Electronic ignition and fuel injection were clearly liabilities in that environment. Old cars can usually be kept going enough to limp to safety while an electronic ignition will strand you as much as a thrown rod.

In an urban setting, Tony is correct. In very rural areas, diesels are king. And when he said that any car abandoned is a fuel source for a gas engine, that's also the fuel source for a diesel. If you are outside a city, the best EMP protected vehicle is a small farm gasoline tractor. Think old Ford N-series, Ferguson TO-series. You're less likely to need to bug out and more likely need to put in a huge garden. While it's been done, a pickup can't plow a field, a tractor can drive around town and off-road and go around abandoned vehicles choking roads and intersections.

Anyone worried about this of thing should have a battery powered AM radio, preferably one made before about 1972. AM travels very far at night. If power goes out in your area, internet will be down and FM radio will be down (no power to the station or the tranmiters). Am will be down too, during the day. But at night, especially if there is a large area without power, you can receive broadcasts from 1000 plus miles away, which may still have power. I'm in philly and routinely pick up Chicago stations at night with all the power on between Philly and Chicago. In the early days of radio, people were picking up stations from Europe in the US.

@@mikeray1544 The only thing is, it's a digital tuner. I don't think an EMP would damage the radio, especially if it was off when it happened, but to be on the safe side, you probably want a radio without any chips. More or less all modern radios are 100% chip (radio on a chip with a few supporting basic components even if it looks analog) and have been for quite a long time. I have an early 70s radio and even it has an IF amplifier chip, though it is mostly discrete component.

@UTG Tony this may or may not work. A while back Myth Busters took a 73ish F150 and drove it into a junkyard. Then they hovered the magnet over it, once it got close enough the truck died. When they took the magnet away it restarted instantly with no trouble. So if the flare keeps a magnetic field going the car won't run. But once it stops it will run.
@ateamfan42
@ateamfan42 8 күн бұрын
The relatively low level, steady-state magnetic field from a junkyard electromagnet is several orders of magnitude less energy than that produced by a massive solar flare. It is one thing to temporarily disrupt electric current with a strong magnet. A powerful enough EMP permanently destroys transistors, much the same way ESD can cause damage.

Electrical engineer here, I agree that points and carb are the best for solar and nuclear events. But I think that normal cars can be hardened easily. Cars are isolated from the ground and largely immune from solar effects that are low frequency. These low frequencies only really effect wires over long distances like telephone or electrical grid. Anything grid tied without good protection is vulnerable, so get whole house emp and surge protection. The only car emp testing that I know of on near modern cars simply didn't affect them or stalled the engine at worst and would restart fine, but that was with with limited energy. Emps are SUPER high frequency and can easily be blocked by adding some ferrite cores to the wiring of the car. They were the cylinders around the cables of CRT monitors. They are very inexpensive as well. Probably just a few, one on the positive battery cable and maybe some by the ECU would suffice or greatly harden it. Everything but the wheel speed sensors, radio/speakers, canbus, and cam/crank signals are low frequency or DC and won't be affected by the ferrite cores so wouldn't hurt to add more, but maybe add them while the engine is cold and running if you think that they might effect the car.

My friend made a biodiesel plant, I inherited it. My other friends new style tdi Beetle got destroyed by using what he made. Straight vegetable oil in a diesel is a problem, the glycerin in the vege oil sticks to the valve stem and cylinder walls and interferes with lubrication. Doable but you need to be good at it. I would buy a lot of head gaskets and figure how long before it gets clogged, then remove and clean the heads every time period. Straight vegetable oil needs to be heated to 400 F just before the injectors to minimize clogging.

For so many years I have argued the same thing you are talking about in this video. I only own vehicles that can either be converted to points or still run points. Most people are so invested (mentally) with electronics that they cannot see the clear and present danger in this electronic era. I still use a lot of things that are considered antiquated as they are much better for referring back to or keeping as a record of what was said or done.

Point use a capacitor and coils and gaps. Charging systems use diodes and coils and resistors. PLEASE tell me how those components in old cars will survive but the same ones in modern cars will fail?
@GlenJS
@GlenJS 18 күн бұрын
@@arthurfoyt6727 The capacitors and coils, even though the current ones would most likely fail, they are easily rebuilt and usable. Diodes on the other hand are much more sensitive to strong electrical variances. Points can be cleaned or refiled and used where the diodes are not able to be used quickly as they would need to be replaced and would take much more time to build than the earlier systems. Alternators originally had remote point driven control boxes that would be easy to build and replace meaning that they are much easier to get back to working in an EMP situation. If nothing else, we can go back to using generators driven by belts and pullies as the cars had before the advent of alternators. This is why the older cars are more desirable in any situation of disruption and disaster.

The other thing i never see talked about on this topic is having access to information pertinent to the things you want to keep going. The old school paper manuals are an absolute must, stuff saved on your phone/computer will likely be useless or inaccessible. Anything you intend to use get a hardcopy of the user, parts, and repair manuals so you can reference them when the normal resources you may take for granted now become inaccessible.

I put a diesel in a 1985 solid front axle 4Runner. The diesel sits a while but it starts and then it keeps going. Planned to run straight vegetable oil (also planned on removing the heads a lot to clean). The I realized I don't have 40 acres to grow seed oil, so no. Gasoline engines can run gaseous fuels, natural gas is easy to make. I have the 1970 350 for the 1978 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 in the garage. It will be tri-fuel : gasoline, propane, natural gas. So the 350 will be maximum compression ratio that works with cheap pump gas without detonation.

Any vehicle with a reliable engine and a manual transmission is the way to go. I like the idea of a magneto over a points distributor because of the reliability. Magnetos need no battery voltage to start. If your battery or charging system ever failed, you could always pop start the vehicle either by pushing it or always parking on an incline. Anyone considering buying a used magneto that came out of a sprint car or race car, I recommend having it reworked for the kind of street or off road driving that you are going to be doing. Magnetos are so reliable that they put them in airplanes, lawn mowers, generators, chainsaws and etc.

In my 70s. Been in ranching all my life. Also been a pilot since the early seventies. And I have learned dozens of Trades. Worked in the farrier trade for years starting at age 16. That's also when I started learning how to work metal and still have my forge. Also like you became proficient in gas welding in the early 70s. In the early eighties I started designing and building my own experimental airplanes. Also from the time I was 9 I was driving big trucks and other heavy equipment. Also know every phase of building construction. And along the way I learned how to lay up composites and TIG weld aluminum or chromoly for airframes. I have also been prepping since the 80s. Have a ranch in northern Arizona another in Colorado and a couple sections in the Ozarks. Early on in Arizona I bought undeveloped real estate around the Phoenix Valley. Sold all of it in the valley in 2006. Acreage I paid as little as $1500 a acre for sold 300,000 and up per acre. I then retired lol My diesel tractors will run regardless. The best day of my 39 Ford 9N was the day I put an electronic ignition on it. But still have the old points distributor and could be converted back quickly. And we could drive a nice new car but I refuse. The newest is still a 99. The bug-out vehicle I built years ago was a 80 Toyota 4x4 on 38s with 5:29 gears. And it has points. I also have more than a couple dozen old classics. Most run. Others are still projects Most still have their points. And the vehicles I feel would matter I have extra of anything that maybe needed. Fully expected diodes to fry in a alternator so I have a few rebuild kits. They like other electronics I feel are necessary like a tablet along with flash or thumb drives are in a faraday cage. Those can be as easy as a galvanized garbage can. We don't plan on bugging out anywhere. Unless there's a massive tidal wave capable of reaching a thousand feet making it to the Ozarks if the worst happens we just go underground. If there is a water event we go to Colorado. And that likely wouldn't be driving but either taking the faster all composite P-51 Mustang. Supercharged LS and very fast. Or the superSTOL bush plane. It is equipped with a supercharged type 1 2300 with points and has redundant ignition. Both could also fly from the Ozarks to Arizona Non-Stop. The ranches have private runways. You described the EMP event the best I've heard. I've known the repercussions of those since the 70s. I have to say we are currently going through a pole shift. And it is happening at an exponential rate. What mostly protect us from the Sun is Earth magnetic Shield. And it is currently 30% weaker than it was during the Carrington event. A diminishing at an exponential rate yearly. Eventually Earth's poles well shift. Perhaps this little is 15 to 30 years. Whether it's geological or not. Evidence says it could be. But it does typically happen every 6,000 years and we are due. And a EMP is much more powerful than nuclear airburst. There's a place called suspicious observers and there are hundreds of hours of documents and videos to watch on what's happening with the Sun and the Earth's pole reversal. I don't pay any attention to the site not because the information isn't relevant because it is. I just don't like the narcissist. But if the big one should happen Transformers fry. They don't even make the large ones in this country and even if they did they can take more than a year just to make one. The large ones require at least two semi trucks to move. It's estimated up to 10 years to get the grid up.but by then.... Because very few people prepare for anything even when they know it's coming it is estimated that 80-90% will perish within the first year. Meet Mad Max scenario. Consider if you're going to the forest everybody else has that planned also. Ever been camping on a holiday? Magnify that number a few thousand or more times. Even the best people just can't live off the land easy anymore. Imagine millions of people out there trying to survive all scared and hungry. Poaching game and not even eating it all because they can't use or carry it all. It's unlikely after a couple days you'll find any wildlife. And if you end up on private property no one knows it better than the landowner. And you won't be welcome. Nobody is to be trusted unless you already know them with a pre-plan. We are all surrounded here by like-minded Neighbors. I have all the tools necessary to do everything without the need of electricityever. And I'm not going to say much more. And whatever you prepare for don't tell anyone. If you think you'll need to bug out it's best to have a pre-planned Place to go. There is rural property just about everywhere that can be had for little money. Even an acre of your own with a obscure buried storm shelter is better than a tent or trailer out in the forest. Because in that you can keep enough food for at least a year and filters to clean any water you find. Now if you're the only one driving down the highway you will be a target for everyone who wants transportation. Sounds scary? Not nearly as much as living through it. I always go by the motto don't be scared be prepared. 30 year food needs to be rehydrated. In most cases fresh water will be harder to find than food. Canned goods can last a few years beyond their expiration date. Rice, instant potatoes should be transferred into airtight waterproof containers with decadent bags. I doubt anybody takes the time to read all this. But oh well. 🤠🐂

Ozark ... You have successfully posted the most important response for prep that I have seen anywhere on KZbin. I too have researched the data that the Suspicious Observers channel has posted for the last couple years. At first I thought it was a joke, but after learning & studying ... I realize the research and connected conclusion is valid. I grew up as a kid that loved to take things apart and see how it works. Dad let me use his tools as long as I took care to put them back the way I found them. If I wanted something he told me to go to work and earn the money to buy it or make it. Now at 73 I'm slowing down but self sufficiency is still of vital importance. We have been preparing for an " Event" since 2008. It was then that I learned everything I thought was true about our way of life and the world was not! Economies,war, -peace, freedom, stable society is very transitional and highly volatile. History is written by the people in power. And, we are a species with amnesia. Over the last year more and more people are beginning to realize that something is "Off". Something is coming. Prepping is making new conversations a lot. This channel is a great example. I appreciate the content. I love the ideas presented. I truely hope a lot of good choices come to us all in the future. The storm is coming! The sad reality is that only a few will survive and it's going to be hard. Nuff said! Prayers. From East Texas

Do the analog retrofit to the XJ, please. I own a 350 Corvette from 1973. The last year of points, no cats. Ground clearance is Poor. Stealth is non-existent. Underhood B&M blower. Moderate cam, etc. If I could get a clean body pre-1973 manual 4WD Suburban? I could swap the engine in to have some decent transportation. I'd probably go back to a Quadrajet or Carter. And I should be good to go. But, as always, you never know. I've always read to carry a spare condenser/capacitor in the glove box. Probably a set of high quality replacement points. And a large seperate cowl or fender mounted 12V regulator. A maybe even a spare (used?) set of good plugs and even wires. Big steel wheels and big tall tires. But that may be overkill. Spray paint and dent the fenders on 'Burban to make it look legit. Pre-1973 to avoid the front 5 mph bumper debacle. Thanks for making me think.

I wanna stir the pot here by suggesting that a properly grounded and shielded simple electronic ignition module (HEI or Duraspark, specifically) is still perfectly fine. Let's take the HEI module and its placement in the distributor cap, for instance - the entire time it's in operation, it's hovering right above that rotor, which is sending about 50kv to the plug wire stud, meaning the module is subjected to constant hammering from local EMP blasts. The only time this will be a problem is if your module is somehow not properly grounded. With that said, a couple further things to consider: Let's just say your ignition module *would* fry from a sudden EMP blast. It's not a big deal to account for that and it's really no different from what points guys are gonna need to do to plan for points not being something you can just walk into any parts store and get anymore. Just keep some replacements on hand. Store em in your farraday cage container and you're good to go. Not a big deal. Especially considering how common it is already for people to carry a spare in their vehicle if they're running these kinds of systems in the first place. Are points more certain to work? Probably. That's why it might be worth keeping a backup points (or electronic) distributor in your car alongside the modules (or points) as a belt and suspenders approach. I think this might be the most sure and flexible approach. Just imagine being able to get modules no problem after an EMP, but needing a new set of points and finding there's none around. . . Lastly, if worse comes to worse, you can use simple electronics components to make a 1:1 clone of your module if things really get that desperate; the schematics and tons of personal research projects are all over the internet if you want more info. I'm not so sure one can make a good set of points from scratch as easily. Either way, it's up to what makes sense for each person's circumstances, which means it's not bad to have a wider range of options available to consider. My advice is to not be so quick to write off those early electronic ignition systems - they could end up being just the thing you need to get out of a jam!

The issue with the gas vs diesel fuel supply issue is cars aren’t the only thing that uses gas. Lots of people, even people who aren’t full-on doomsday preppers have gas powered generators, and if there was an EMP that took out every car made in the last 40 years, you can bet your ass the power grid would also be fried, and people will be running generators 24/7, which will use up quite a bit of gas. I’m generally not a diesel guy, but for full-on doomsday prepper vehicle, I would still go with a 12v Cummins, unless you have a still to run the gas car on alcohol.

By the way, while most of these guys drive their bloated late model pickups made of cheezy plastic crap, miles of can buss and ECU's, Thinking they're all tough with their gun hoard and diesel pickups, I continue to drive 65-95 year old vehicles that I build and fix myself. Heck, I've never owned a smart phone !! I also have always maintained something very few of these guys even think about..... Real health and physical fitness. Very good observations about gasoline vs diesel, by the way !! (spark ignition engines are also able to burn a wide variety of fuels). "Collapse" or no, people have got to be less consuming, demand higher quality in the things they have, and wean themselves from the insane addiction to "tech", giant fancy everything, ect.

You're right, of course. But, I'm fat, stupid and lazy. I'll never give up my dependency. Give me cheap goods produced with Chinese slave labor, or give me death!

I'm interested! Making a series covering that sounds awesome. Also, I don't mind the longer video formats, I prefer it when the subject matter warrants it.

My thoughts for a basic go machine go to s Honda CB 750 and drive it with a belt and a simple tilt engine mount to slip engage a hundred dollar Harbor Freight. Also a robust lawn tractor with the drive pulleys reversed for twenty plus miles an hour travel Extra tall rear tires on a tractor we use in the field. Somebody after you just hit the fields

Thank you for this video, Uncle Tony. It's greatly appreciated. Honestly, I wish it were longer. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I'd love to see you do a bug-out conversion on one of your XJs.

Tony thanks for sharing, I would just go ahead and make the videos with out question. There are so many of your viewers that will glady watch and take notes, and there will be alot of scragglers that come across your videos that will do the same. What was that movie? "The people will come ray" ya get my point😂

Do it ,I would love seeing practical ideas to make an electronics centric vehicle more analog and less computer controlled. Right to repair a machine we paid good money for has been under attack by a consumer driven market controlled by corporations for decades.
