Get rid of key. Replace it with starter button. Put a secret cut out switch in starter circuit. Total cost less than $20. Make sure you can preheat glowplugs too.

And a stop button because the fuel cutoff seems to be solenoid operated. No glow plugs on the Bukh I believe.

Totally agree on losing the key switch but you need a power switch, kill switch and preheat switch with the Bukh DV 10 or at least the one I deal with. The preheat is a heater in the intake. I have momentary toggle switches for preheat and the kill solenoid.

A replacement ignition switch is a simple and relatively cheap fix. It’s not worth the frustration, just replace it with a toggle switch and a push button start.

May I suggest - also for other single handed sailors like James - hearing you'll be heading for Vanuatu, to visit Tonga Islands [Vavaú -Ha'apai - Tonga -Eua] - if you can - bcos, when I was there (twice) long time ago this, then almost untouched group of 90+ islands, was one of the highlights on our whole round-the-world adventures. Rajai Ampat, Indonesia is excellent for diving/snorkeling, but probably expensive...Fair winds!

Grips of jankey. Kubota knock-off ignition is my choice. A second is planned for the cabin. As is a twin mainsheet, after more money. Get a manual access to the deceleration on the pump. Most have just an electrical solenoid moving to deceleration/ cut-off. The Geck keeps improving halfway around the world.

Voyage repairs show the ingenuity of the person in charge of the engine space. 30 years ship repair I've seen it all. The Vice Grips were a clever fix. No rush to do a perminate fix as long as the temp works to the next long term port.

your 'new' windward sheeting end-of-boom system is basically half of Barry's (old sea dog) double-mainsheet system, which has it's own pros and cons .. you could double your system and mimic his, and reserve your mid-boom-sheeting system as a back up.

Do you have a multimeter on board? If not, get one. A basic understanding of 12v circuits would allow you to approach rewiring etc with more confidence . In the case of the ignition switch (really a stop/ start switch) you would see that swapping in an ignitiion switch is basic, and in this simple situation 2 momentary switchs would easily replace the start/stop switch.

So glad the engine is working out for you! Also like the creative thinking on the main for a better boom angle, but.... The padeye you are using on the deck is 90 degrees wrong. Yeah yeah, I know, little boat, I'll only use it when it's light air, blah blah blah, but that's really not good Holly. If it lets go you or someone else could really get hurt. If you send me the contact I'll send you a pair of padeyes adaquate for the load which you can mount aft and pependicular to the existing ones (Spin sheet blocks?). I wish I could be a Patreon, but I'm a poor rigger. I do have a lot of parts though, let me hook you up. It's the least I can do.

When I leave mine, I have a 12 volt dehumidifier I rig up powered by a solar panel, which discharges into the galley sink. When the sun comes up it charges a small battery from a car jump-start kit, and this runs the dehumidifier which draws less than five amps. I remove the main engine start battery and place in storage mode. To do this, I fully charge it, then empty it of its electrolyte and flush out the empty battery with a little distilled water. The electrolyte I keep aside in a proper plastic bottle for the purpose. When I return, I simply refill the battery with its electrolyte, top up if necessary with a little distilled water and give a top up charge, and it is as good as new. A battery may be preserved for years by using this simple ploy. No acid--no sulphation.

Thank you for all of the videos. I have enjoyed watching it for quite some time, and as someone who has been in the maritime industry for decades let me say, your resilience and abilities are quite impressive. In all the years I’ve watched this is the only time I’ve ever had any concern for anything that I have seen, and I’m a little worried about attaching what is now your main sheet onto that pad eyeand its ability to sustain and heavy weather just a thought captain . Thanks again you’re awesome .

@brendanh8978 Жыл бұрын
Came here to say the same thing. She said she'd tie it off with a preventer, I think, but still. If the strain is left on that padeye and she takes a squall or strong gust, it seems likely it would snap it. I don't want to see shards of metal, that block, or line whipping through her cockpit. She's a smart cookie, though, I'm sure she's thought of all this.
@johncarr950
@johncarr950 Жыл бұрын
I also admire the capabilities of this young woman and in particular her ability to think outside the box but sometimes a proper fix is better than a jury rig. A main track car system is designed to take the sudden loads of a gybe (upwards of 2 tonnes) where a pad eye is just small bolts through the deck and this system is only for light winds, nothing over 5-6kts. That can only be used with a preventer and monitoring the weather conditions (and I’m not trying to tell you how to suck eggs 🤣) as the sea has no mercy for the unwary. Enjoy NZ and I think you’re next leg up to Vanuatu which is a nice place to visit and you’ll find a quaint French influence as well. I bid you fair winds and safe sailing dear 👍👍🤩🤩

@bryancohn9406

I was thinking the same. Those switches are simple, you just transfer one wire or bunch of wires at a time to the new switch. Take a couple photos of the original switch with everything wired and use the photo for reference. The amount of time spent with a metal saw had to exceed how long it’d take to transfer a dozen (or less) wires. Baffling……
