I made a huge mistake. Don't buy a Veteran Sherman as your first EUC.

They say "it takes a big man to admit his mistakes". Well, I am a very big man in this episode because I admit to so many mistakes. #1 is getting one of the largest and heaviest Electric Unicycles (EUC), the Veteran Sherman, as my first EUC to learn on. Many painful lessons have been learned. This video should act as a warning to anyone else considering this same mistake.

@@arcrides6841 I've been calling insurance companies all day trying to get it insured though. Ewheels said they had a customer get insured through Nationwide, but they told me no. I'm sure someone will insure it. Really it should be offered by the manufacturer.

@@juliusnewman2094 Yeah I hear ya. But to be honest as long as you don't ride it into a lake it should be fine. It's pretty bulletproof with that roll bar. You'd have to really smash it up good to break this thing. Just make sure that Ewheels is good with servicing incase you need parts later.

I also purchased the Sherman as my first EUC. Its my 4th day riding it now and I put about 100 miles on it. Learning all the basics took me the first 2 days and it was smooth sailing from there. Learning EUC's has an odd learning curve, where it feels insurmountable and then suddenly everything clicks. So keep up with it and you will get it, you just have to overcome your anxiety. But, you need to make sure you are very well geared. My body is sore, bruised and scratched up from my learning experience. I also had a serious fall on day 3 that would have messed me up if it wasn't for my gear. My clavicle is still bothering me. I think age plays a very large role in how well you can tame the Sherman for sure. I am in my mid thirties and feel that I can put my body through the gauntlet. At 45 plus, probably pushing it. Good luck, I am sure things will click if you stay persistent. No need to push yourself just make time every day to achieve a goal and you will be riding it in no time.

It is heavy - therefore not beginner friendly. However, if you are planning to buy a fast and durable EUC, this is the one for you. This was my first wheel and I don't regret my purchase one bit. It took me about 5h to learn how to ride the Veteran Sherman and I must admit that it was hard at first because of its weight. But now, after a month of riding it, I know it was a good decision. Always buy the wheel you want to ride. Don't push yourself back by buying cheaper, lighter wheels because you're afraid you can't handle them. You will learn over time. The performance and feel of riding high-performance wheels like this is an absolute blast, but you have to grow your skills to appreciate it. Titling your video as: , "Don't buy a Veteran Sherman as your first EUC" is, in my opinion, total nonsense. Just because you didn't step up to the plate doesn't mean others won't too. To all those who consider buying this wheel as their first EUC: yes, it is worth it! But you need a little more effort and patience then on other wheels.

I totally agree. Heavy but once you are use to it you will love it because the weight makes it more stable and it is built like a tank so it can handle the occasional spill or drop without worrying you are going to break it. I am happy with my choice. Just a steep learning curve is what I wanted to get across to people.

The Sherman is an amazing, amazing EUC and can only be truly appreciated if and when you have ridden other wheels first. By going directly to the Sherman as your first EUC, you denied yourself that gift because your appreciation of the wheel is tainted by the frustration of learning on it. I’m sad about that but happy you realize your mistake and continuing to pursue riding EUCs. Once mastered, there is nothing like it. The big smiles and joy riding an EUC brings will be worth it.

I actually used to have kind of a loose, bummy knee and when I first started riding an euc the tendon on the inside of my knee would hurt, something that used to happen to me from other board sports. Riding an euc seems to have fixed my knee issue from strengthening it.

On a day 2 found this video, on day 3 returned heavy wheel and took small one ks14d. Next 7 days after that, each single day , not more than half of an hour learned how to ride. After next two weeks returned small wheel and took the heavy wheel back. It’s actually not about the size or weight, it’s about the way how to teach your brain to work with it as an extension of your body and with a small wheel you focus on it, instead of fear to drop, or injury yourself or refill motivation after failures.

I bought a King Song 18xl for my first EUC, and it took me about a week to learn. Apparently it's one of the better wheels to learn on, and is a good mid-range cruiser. It's frustrating at first, but there's nothing like the exhilaration of that first ride in a straight line for more than ten feet. That's when you start to think you could actually do this. EUC riding definitely uses muscles you don't use otherwise. My second night my hips hurt in every position except standing up. I had to take an aspirin to take the edge off enough to sleep, but since then I haven't had the problem again. You'll just have to accept that at least one recovery day will be included in that learning schedule. My sister recommends a basketball court for learning, just grab one of the poles and ride around that until you feel comfortable. We managed to teach my brother in 1 hour with the technique. Aside from to and from work, which takes me to another city, my 18xl gets more miles a week than my car does.

Great job! Fellow Kanatian here! I just bought an Inmotion V10F and am learning to ride myself. Looks like you were at Walter Baker Park. I had a hard time finding a paved area with a fence to grab too...drove around Kanata for close to an hour to find a spot to learn. After finally finally finding a spot and a couple of minutes holding on, I no longer needed the fence to start off from! I've logged about 60 km so far and getting better bit by bit. Your previous video on protection has helped me to seriously consider better safety measures, that and a couple of scary moments on the paths! Thanks.

Thanks for sharing! I always enjoy watching new riders experiences. Learning to ride an EUC is tough. No matter the size you get, you're going to feel some discomfort during the process. You would probably have a much easier time learning to ride a 16" wheel. I know you feel like you regret it now, but once you finally get it down that could change. When I first got my V11 I was so excited, but after riding it for a couple days I was not happy. It felt cumbersome and unwieldly (I'm like 120 lbs). I've now put thousands of miles on it and I have no regrets. It's perfect. In time, your Sherman may feel perfect to you. Well I just noticed this video was posted a year and a half ago. Haha... Guess I have to check now and see how it went for ya!

I almost bought the Sherman for my first Euc but I took Marty’s advice & got a Mten3 instead. It turned out to be a a great choice & wise decision to by a smaller to learn on. Happy New Year! I just stumbled on your channel and noticed the Sherman. Fortunately I started my EUC journey just before the Sherman released. I come from dual motor power scooters and Onewheels. I commuted for 5 years on scooters and the Onewheel was my snowboard surrogate. I think I would have been just like you and picked up a Sherman for my first wheel. Instead I picked up a 100v Gotway Nikola and have really enjoyed that wheel. It only took a few hours to be able to ride it but only after 325 miles do I feel comfortable riding around with it on San Francisco streets. I wanted to pick-up EUC as it was the only PEV that I didn't know how to ride. Now, I am already thinking about picking up the Sherman as my long range cruiser. I ride in a San Francisco PEV group (BAESK8) that does 25 mile plus group rides all around San Francisco. You need a powerful PEV to tackle San Francisco hills. Looking forward to seeing your content once you get your EUC legs.

Maybe a "mistake", but not a failure. Despite the pain you have had, you'll clearly make it. It looks like you're done with the hardest and most frustrating part. It may take a little more practice until it becomes recreational and enjoyable, but it will only get easier from here. Also, you'll always have a great story when someone asks how you started riding EUCs!

I am new as well and now I'm riding to work on the Veteran. it was my first wheel and I practiced on a wall and did some exercises to help with the process. You are right it is a lot more difficult but once you get off the wall you are good to go.

Thanks Scot. I did look for used EUCs around here in Ottawa. Perhaps it was because Winter was around the corner or perhaps there is just not a lot of EUCs around here but I didn't see any. Or I may have gone the used route to start. Once I decided to buy something new I researched everything and came up with the Sherman based on the massive range. I wanted to go on long rides. The learning curve was steeper than I expected. I get for someone that had previous boarding, or Onewheel experience it wouldn't have been so steep. I had no experience at all so I feel it took me longer. Just thought it was important to tell fellow NEWBs that you might want to start smaller, or used if possible.

I saw this video before I bought my Sherman, which is my first wheel, & I can confirm it is different for everyone. I definitely understand where you're coming from, however. So long as you know your physical limitations, have the discipline to start slow, keep it slow until you're ready to go quicker, & continually advance your skills, you'll likely be fine. I also began learning in a way that nobody mentioned, but it helped a lot. I started learning by riding around my house - having the walls to help maintain / improve balance. It helped me work on the more difficult skills involved with moving slowly. After a few days of doing that, I took it to a park to work on riding without anything to hold onto. I have used plastic cones to improve my turning abilities. Riding an EUC is certainly not for everyone, especially considering physical problems. I think the primary reason I've improved quickly is the joy I find in riding and gliding. It's the most fun I've had in a very long time. Either way, safety first, and enjoy the ride!

It is not for everyone! That is for sure! I just started with the KingSong 16x and have so much fun on it! I do find myself wanting to go faster, but realized after my first fall, that I am thankful I went with a “slower/learning” option before going full throttle.

@@kangaroowest I completely agree! Throttling down the speed is even why I haven't put anything but the stock pads on it yet. Given, I have managed to get the Sherman up to just shy of 45 mph, but it's not easy for a light rider to do without better pads. I'm over the 500 mile mark now, with many of those miles being around my house for "slow practice", so I will be putting some better pads on it soon. It has been incredibly fun! Keep riding, & be safe!

If your very experienced with all things wheels and athletic there is no reason to not get a Sherman as the first. I would have got it as my first but its sold out. I got a King Song S18 and hopped on a rode it immediately. I love the suspension (I do lots of mountain bike trail riding) but its very easy for me to overpower it. I think the stock pads on all EUCs will a problem if your body does not conform to whatever the manufacturer thinks is the most common. I'm 6'4'' and have calf muscles that bulge out like crazy compared to most people and the stock pads on the S18 felt like they were stabbing me in the calf muscles. I actually had to cut large holes in the stock pads where my calves are located.

I also agree that in my present riding level I say I won't go fast but once I have it mastered I am sure the speed will increase. Going 40 mph at my present level seems insanely fast. It won't feel fast once I have it mastered.

@@Bowmans-Woods I felt exactly the same about my 16x at first, and then suddenly I was pushing up against my max limit and annoyed at my EUC beeping at me. Every few days I would up the speed for the tiltback again and then invariably would hit the threshold a day later. Next thing you know..my EUC is just too slow for me! Stick with it. It'll happen. Might help to borrow or temporarily trade for a lighter EUC until it feels natural and then switch back to your Sherman. Won't be long before all you think about is riding it! :D

I'm glad I'm starting out on a 16x i road rashed the hell out of my pedals, lol. I found that if I lightly carve i stay more stable, only have 22 miles and im catching on well. Sore as hell but I'm getting it.

At 53 my first euc was Gotway Nikola Amazing machine but big, 52 pounds worth. What holds people back is fear, I got angry with myself because I was having some trouble getting the hange of it. Hopped on it and went flying down the road! Funny because it was almost 0 degrees out and I was in a parka. I believe that my anger overcame my apprehension. to ride it's just counter intuitive to what are brain thinks of balance or how thing's should work. So my recommendation to anyone trying to learn is put on enough protective gear that you feel safe if you would fall.

Good advice. I got used to it and now enjoy it but you are right. If you have never ridden and EUC or something similar, then expect a steep learning curve. You will get the hang of it with time. I ride mine all the time now, but you have to overcome your fear of falling off before you can relax and go with the flow of the EUC. Even very experienced riders will fall off from time to time if something unexpected happened pend but usually your skill allows you to slow down before you fall off and nothing serious happens. The Sherman is built like a tank so it can handle the drops.

I have a scooter and this EUC. If I want a quick ride to the store or fun ride with others with scooters. I ride the scooter. The EUC is fun but you need to wear way more protective gear. Much higher chance of something going wrong an taking a fall. A scooter is like riding a bike. So easy you almost feel like you shouldn't bother wearing a helmet at all. I don't wear elbow and knee pads to ride my scooter. Even off road.

You can learn on any EUC; benefits of learning on a small EUC is that you learn the basics and controll better/sooner. A big heavy wheel may have a slightly harder begining stage. But, once you can balance you rely on the weight and power of the wheel and not your ability....Sort of like learning to ride offroad on a dirt bike. If you start on a small 250cc (4 stroke) you learn ballance, control, choosing lines, etc better, because you have to. A big KTM 500cc will just plow through while you hang on creating possible bad habits and make it hard to get on smaller bikes. Well, that is my take atleast.

I hear you about the aches and pain. I'm 60 and started out on the Tesla V2. It was definitely a workout. After 7 days I was cruising the side streets though. A couple months later I bought the MSX Pro. That took several weeks to get a handle on, but definitely the heavier weight was an advantage after getting used to it. It may take a little more work but you'll get used to it. Keep after it!

Tank you for sharing your experianc, it realy takes a man to admit a mistakeI. I just got myself an Inmotion V8 that fits perfectly on my boat. It is 15 Kg and easy to handle. I have been riding for 3 days and already did 40 km. The speed is limited to 25km/h so I am only wearing wrist protectors and shoes that cover the ancles. I do a lot of Island hopping in the dutch Wattenmeer, The roads there are a litle bit to rough for a scoter, but for a EUC it is no problem.

Im the same. My first bike was a FZR 1000. First car Camaro, Hang-gliding, went straight out and baught all the equipment. Though I started with a V8F mainly because it was second hand and cheap. My next wheel will be a V13 though

No doubt the change in weather will help considerably with your willingness to let your legs take a beating ;) My advice is spend more time riding and less time getting on and off (as soon as you are able to stay up as long as you want). It gives your legs a break from the constant pressure, and keeps the fun level up while you continue to build your comfort level. Starting out is always a bear in large part because your EUC spends most of its time at an angle and jamming into your inner leg. Not fun with an EUC of any significant weight! Seems like a good choice. Just remember all those extra moving parts mean more chance of breaking it if you wipe out. Sherman is heavy but it’s built like a tank and can take the drops.

Ya. Its a whole different type of Physics than riding anything else so there is some steep learning curve. I did my MC license test on my V-Rod. That is one long and heavy bike to be doing a test on. But, like I said, no real issue. I guess I figured I would be a natural at EUC as well. ummmm, not so much. Especially in the freezing cold. Not as much fun when you are cold and stiff. I wont give up though.

I have 2 Sherman. My first wheel was a Gotway Nikola+ 100volt. I had a 42.5 mph crash the first month of riding. Luckily the Nikola is round and built like a tank so it only got scraped up. I had good saftey gear on and escaped with minor injuries. I put over 4,000 miles on since my first EUC ride last April. I am absolutely obsessed. I hope you don't get put off riding. This sport is about 100% easier in the summer.

I learned on an 18XL and that is 53lbs. as much as I want to grab a Veteran, I'm not sure if its worth the extra weight, the Abrams is even more than the Sherman, and I use it for my daily commute and I don't have an office job so I have to roll it around my entire shift.... but honestly practicality aside... COST is what's holding me back

I’m happy with the Sherman. Solid and long range. I bought the Apollo Ghost scooter for Janice. It’s so easy to ride and no need for tons of protective gear so if I did it over I’d have to decide if I wanted an EUC or just go with the simple to ride scooter.

My kingsong 18L was my first, wish i got smaller to learn but eventually got the hang of it. quite a few spills before I was experienced enough. lucky I and the kingsong suffered no serious injury, great fun

I just went from a onewheel XR to a EUC.. I choosed a gotway MSP HS, thanks mostly to Marty and U-Stride, ans after 200km i'm starting to really enjoy it a lot. I have absolutly no regret, although riding a onewheel is really awesome carve wise.. But this power, the range, the POWER ! Already hiting some 60km/h speed.. I love it. So yeah, keep working on it. You will eventually succed !

I have a friend that bought an EUC before me and let me try it out, which is what drove me to buy one myself. Luckily I’ve always had great balance so it took me all of 5 mins to pick it up, being able to take off without holding onto anything and make full turns. It definitely depends on the person as to which one you should start off with.

Very informative. I’m 67 years old, have been doing power-scooters for some 3 years. I was thinking of going UP from my dual-motor 3200 watt (nominal) scooter, and became interested in EUCs. My present scooter weighs in at 87 pounds, and is a problem carrying up 2 flights of stairs, even with an over-the-shoulder carrying strap. I was thinking that instead of carrying a 5 FT long(folded) scooter, an EUC would be easier AND it looks like more fun. BUT, I really like the SPEED of my WOLF KING(60 mph). I had, like you, thought that I had always been able to conquer what others thought were the “odds”. After watching this video, I will go smaller, but not small. Gonna order a V-11, after consideration, and watching WRONG WAY’s videos. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Others will appreciate it, also. I’m sure!

Thats very funny! One of my favourite sailing channel got into EUC. Let me assure you one thing: NOW, that you have mastered to drive the first meters(even when its wobbly as hell as you showed us)....from now on it will only get better with your riding, and that VERY fast! 3-4 weeks froom now you will not think about what you are doing while riding anymore, and it will get into your brain and blood like breathing! Trust me! You will totally comfortably glide alonog with 20-25mph and feel just great..... its just getting used to it. You will also NOT regret anymore that you bought one of the best EUC from the getgo ;-)

Nice video and in a lot of ways we are similar as in going all in and my Wolf Warrior Scooter 11 is testament to that when I recently went google shopping for one. However I took the advice from a few seasoned riders when it came to an EUC and bought the in motion V10F as a starter wheel for my 60th birthday treat. A few weeks in now and I’ve covered over 300mi now with many rides over 20mi+ and my confidence and skill has have gone from Zero to feeling like a Hero. What I have learned this past few weeks has taught me to not rush into the beast that is the Sherman and although I have been offered a few times to ride one in my local riders group I will only take up the offer when I hit around 1000 miles. Will my next wheel be a Sherman ? Probably not now I know how these things perform. I currently ride my V10F flat out 90% of the time so 20-25mph and now feel like I’m ready to up it another 10MPH so have my eyes on the new V12 when the reviews are in. My limited advice is don’t give up EUCs are a lot more fun than scooters just buy a beginner wheel and you won’t look back. @@Bowmans-Woods I’m 1300 miles down on my V10F now and bought another to ride me over till my v12 arrives (bought and paid for) I’ve rode a few Sherman’s now along with a Nikola and V11 and TBH still love the agility of the V10. which now has jump pads fitted and I can jump kerbs, potholes and tree roots with ease. I can’t on the aforementioned wheels due to size and weight and me being a skinny lightweight rider. Great to hear you now mastered the Sherman and enjoying it. I’ve come to the conclusion there’s no bad wheels out there just ride what suits your style of riding. Keep on crushing dude 👍

Good info for beginners! Will be eyeing the Sherman 2 when it comes out but KS16X is/was my first wheel, no regrets so far after 800km for anyone else new to the hobby. Very manageable at 50 lbs, plenty of zip even for a bigger guy over 200 lbs, I just keep it close to 40kph to be safe. Trolley handle is really convenient too and I comfortably get about 55-60km range out of it.

If you you take your time respect the machine it can easily be your first wheel .. veteran Sherman max is my first wheel learned to ride in a couple days.. after 500 miles it feels like it’s part of me.. same as a motorcycle take your time, no your limits and respect the machine.. not everyone can afford to afford 2 machines one to learn and then upgrade..and like myself I always go big at first and take my time because I quickly out grow smaller slower vehicles

You're a bigger man than most to be able to admit the difficulty. When I started on a 30lb wheel I was shocked at how big and heavy and hard on my legs it was. Only after a year or so did riding a bigger wheel become something I was interested in. Learning on a 30lb wheel is infinitely easier than learning on a 60-75lb wheel. In many ways the smaller wheels are more fun too. If I was you I'd keep the Sherman but I'd double down and buy an MCM5 or a V8F. The maneuverability, acceleration and portability of the smaller wheel is what will ADDICT you. Riding a smaller wheel feels like driving a sports car compared to the Sherman which feels like like driving an oversized Hummer.

I did exactly the same thing 😜😃 my wife and I both are motorcyclists advanced test pass with a GS adventure and have inline skated, skateboarded learned to juggle etc So just like you, thought yeah we’ll get this. We had to take two steps back. I purchased a KS16X for my wife, but also for us both to learn on and then got a M-Ten 3 also just to make it even easier. We’re riding now at a ‘reasonable’ level but still lots and lots to learn. 😁
