I love how this season (and this episode in particular) really seems to compliment Subaru's arc from the first season. - He spent so much time gaining people's trust and making amends (Emilia, Rem, Ram, the entire royal court, etc.) and now he finds himself wondering who *he* can trust/ask for help. Roswaal admitted that he orchestrated the attack on Arlam. Ram seems to be on his side. Emilia is more or less traumatized from her trial. Frederica's still a wildcard. Garf is...well...doing exactly what you'd expect a character with the same VA as Bakugo to do in a series like this. And now Beatrice basically derails all the trust and friendship Subaru had built with her. - So glad Otto earned the MVC (most valuable character) spot this episode by proving to be a genuine ally for Subaru in the end.

Beatrice betrayed her own feelings towards Subaru here, you can see in her eyes and words that she is really conflicted about this and is repeating "you are just human" as if trying to convince herself that Subaru never meant anything to her. The last thing Subaru sees before dying in this loop confirms it for me - Beako is devastated to see him die but can't move becase of her sense of loyalty to the book which was her whole life before meeting him.

Is it because he's just that lucky, or is it because deep down, subconsciencely in a place she doesn't want to admit to, she is just that lonely and desperate for connection? Of course she cares. And those times she tells him to die where she can't see him, it is because she knows everything is hopeless and doesn't want to see with her waking eyes the only remaining hope she has left vanish in front of her, even if she knows it's gone. She's had everything taken from her too many times already and it's left her so worn down and exhausted that she can't handle it anymore. Remember what she said in season 1 when she uttered that line. "Betty is not like Roswaal, even if it would secure a future for me, I've had enough of pain, suffering, fear...Everything, I suppose!"

In this particular case... I don't know if that metaphor works. Very Cryptic Spoilers: Unless in this case the bet was actually to stand still for centuries and her going out with you was entirely her own choice, and she's incredibly conflicted by her breaking the bet, and is denying any feelings for you because of her intense fear of isolation, betrayal, emptiness, and uselessness. Also unbeknownst to her the person she made the bet with was totally trying to wingman for you, and the entire end goal of the bet to begin with was so she could be with you.

He remembers about his time being at Petelgeuse’s cave and how lonely he is except that time he had Rem to save him but this time he’s truly alone. He thinks about death very very much for three days to a point that he lost all of his senses. Every cell of his body only sought death until Otto’s arrival. Absurd Turk People deal with these types of things in different ways. He mentally broke in episode 15. In episode 16 he wasn’t thinking right and caused some events that lead to Rem getting killed by the white whale, caused Emilia to get killed and caused Puck to end the world. 18 The events from those 3 episodes caused him to completely give up and was shocked at how Rem could sit there and say that she loved him because he was traumatized about from those events and how in the past he didn’t like his life.

On my part, I think, she truly loves Subaru, she saved him not because the book told her to do but because she sees him more or less as a friend. Nothing concerning Subaru is written in the book I think (as with the book of Bételgeuse) That's why she tried to protect him many times and searchs excuses like Rebecca to perform some action (example : She didn't removed the curse of Subaru on a loop but did it when Subaru told her about the debt puck has vis a vis to Subaru or then, when she applied a contract with him that said, she will protect him until he die, which in both cases are a divergence from what would normally be written in the book if some passages would have concerned him (So basically the Kashira)

Absurd Turk Whoever pretended to be does not return to his situation less harsh. In this case Subaru's own mind was FORCED to go crazy to protect itself. It was so bad that he feigned dementia to avoid suffering more. If he didn't pretend to be crazy to cope with the situation, Subaru would genuinely go insane. Suddenly that vocal tic of hers has a lot more meaning. Before, you would just assume that as a spirit with her power, she'd be far removed from needing or wanting to learn about the nuances of human discussion, so she just uses the phrase at frequent, random intervals as a substitute for those nuances to push an aloof, noncommittal front. Now, we can guess that she uses the phrase whenever she says or does anything according to the Gospel. It isn't that she doesn't care about anything and wants to convince you that she doesn't. It's that she cares a _lot,_ and she's trying to convince _herself_ that she doesn't. Of course, this is coming from a fan of the anime, so I could be completely wrong.

For me she's obviously lying to him. Remember in the S1, Betelgueuse said Subaru wasn't mention in his book, I think it's the same for Beatrice. Subaru is the only one that Beatrice can interact with freely and She saved him multiple because she likes him. Plus Bea let Subaru die so many times in others timelines if she had to protect subaru from the beginning she's suck at it.
