Spoilers The title is a bit misleading. That isn't just 1 space alien. It is a symbiotic colony. Most parasites in the show have taken only 1 host and are able to cover only part of it's body. This is a very dominant parasite that has partnered with several others. It controls the head and upper body while they cover the arms, legs, torso, etc. They relinquish full body control in return for sharing the host. They are all sentient but yield to the dominant one under a hive mind. By using it's lesser siblings in this way the prime parasyte is able to achieve "1 man army", levels of combat. It could have taken every bullet and sword strike thrown here and shrugged them off. It just wasn't sure of itself yet so it did a field test.
