I think it was Donald McLeod who said the crunluath should create a rippling effect. Getting them to flow is hard but this is a great exercise for those new (and old) to it.

Could you do a variant of this with the "redundant low A"?

To be honest, that's probably a ways off. I personally don't play the redundant low A version (and think it sounds like the piper is making a mistake, even when done correctly). That said, I'd try like a half note on the theme note, the next beat would be an even triplet across the third beat of low G, Low G, Low A, and then beat four would be the other two 16th note low A's heading to an eighth note E.
