Crusaders Live in Seattle 1973 full

Not sure if he still lives in the Seattle area, but Stix Hooper moved in down the street from me when I was in middle school. I had no clue who he or the Crusaders were at the time, but luckily my friend really loved them. Not sure how he heard about Stix moving in, but was adamant that we knock on his door and welcome him to the neighborhood, despite my insistence we just leave him be. Stix answered the door in an apron (whatever he was cooking smelled amazing) and he was incredibly gracious to briefly talk shop with some young aspiring musicians even while he still had something on the stove. Strange but cherished memory especially as my appreciation for this group only grows with time. Thank you for posting!

That’s a great story and a great memory that you have obviously carried with you through your life. I think it was Eddie Harris who said that in order to be a good musician you must first be a good person. Your story definitely reveals what type of person Stix Hooper is. Fantastic set. I find myself coming back to this frozen moment in time, and it never gets old. Wish this was avail on Cd or LP. One by of my favorite bands of all time. What a group of musicians … I love the early straight ahead stuff all the way up to the late 70’s recordings. Unique sound and great compositions, … grooving to - 50 years later ! With all that talent, how about a call out for bassist Rupert Hughes killing it all over here - and on Watts Happening - look out ! Never knew of him before this … set the stage for Robert Popwell to follow I’d imagine. Thanks for posting this.

So blessed to have met Norbert "Stix" Hooper, a founding member, years back before I knew how great this band was, and to have several of their albums on vinyl since finding out how awesome this band was. True talent, real sweat, devoted musicians making music that outlasts fads and trends. Bless their souls.

I was in Jr. High from 1969 - 1972, and in High School from 1972 - 1975. So somewhere in in the early part of the 70's I heard The Crusaders and Passport on FM Radio, when FM Rock Stations were independently owned and quite few them (the DJ's who had free reign back then) would spin a lot of this type of Cool Progressive Jazz. FM Rock Stations went downhill in the late 70's early 80's. Thank God for KZbin! This is where I listen to a lot of my favorite music. Very rare do I listen to the radio. Late at night just so I can go to sleep. AM Talk Radio or an FM Classical Station. (And I downloaded Ad Blocker, so no ads on KZbin to bother me.)

For great follow to this period Crusaders, reference can be made to Joe Sample/Randi Crawford live album release. And for some good contrast, the Marvin Gaye: Live in Oakland (audio CD) has Sample on keys and it’s simply fantastic comping behind Gene Paige charts. Crusaders were the heaviest cats on the scene, for a helluva long time.

This is what a really tight band sounds like live. These guys were one of the truly great fusion jazz groups, much underrated, but their early 70s work is unique. RIP Joe Sample and Wayne Henderson!

I think the personnel listing on this video is incorrect. Although Robert 'Pops' Popwell was the bassist for The Crusaders, you can distinctly hear Henderson naming Luther Hughes during the final song. Luther Hughes does list The Crusaders in his bio, so maybe a fill in that performance or tour? The original 1972 studio recording bassist was Chuck Rainey.

The group was sounding very good here but they got even better IMO, check out this from Soul Power the film of the Ali/Foreman concert in Zaire.
