Bearing spread is the distance between two faces of shell bearing.

You can't check bearing shell ovality. However, you can measure bearing shell thickness at various points on both sides of shell and compare that with thickness given in Manual as a criteria whether to use bearing or not. There are other checks of bearing. Checking bearing shell is another question to explain. Can't write too much in words. Ovality is checked for con rod after tightening two parts of con rod at hydraulic pressure given in Manual. Appreciate your questions. I hope I told you in brief and you got some idea.
