I'm already doing a lot of rucking with steep hills to climb and descend. Do you think that's good enough? Also, don't you think that stepups work well for the descent, since you must step down off the box?

Training outdoors on actual rugged terrain with weight on your back is absolutely the ideal training environment. Keep that up 100%. And yes, step ups are a phenomenal and easily accessible exercise to incorporate in your training. For those that do not have access to natural inclines or terrain - we recommend this addition to their training. The more parallels we can apply in training that simulate being outside trekking up and down mountains - the better prepared we can be. Keep up the great work!

I have a friend who just ran the Georgia Death race who says he has trouble losing toenails on the downhills; do you have any suggestions that might help him with this issue? He's looked at shoes and a number of other solutions to no avail.

Going a half size larger on your shoes is the best advice for that. A wider toe box shoe can also help. Altras, topo, or flux are some of the wider toe box brands. But to a degree...it's unavoidable for some folks.
