I first heard of Nick de Firmian via the Modern Chess Opening series where he was both author/co-author at various times. He is widely regarded as an openings expert and is a three time US champion, so definitely no slouch. I still have my original MCO copy, spine broken, yellow with age and smudged with whatever I may have been eating at the time......good times. Regarding the game, black is completely equal after 8) e5 so this is by no means a Benoni-killer. After 15) ...Rxe6, black goes from almost a pawn up to a pawn and a half down...with the simple 15)...Kg8, black holds a solid advantage. Such is the Benoni, son of my sorrow, live by the sword, die by the sword.

Someone at my club plays the Benoni. He plays a side line to skip some of the bad positions you can get if your opponent knows how to attack it.

I'm a Benoni guy. Works pretty well at my level. I want to learn the Nimzo so I can have the flexibility in the opening of doing both, similar to the way this game started. Benoni works well when white playes Nf3 first.
