In Vladimir Putin’s Russia, opposition to the regime is more dangerous than ever. The same goes for public criticism of those in charge. The right to demonstrate has been successively restricted in recent years, media freedoms curtailed, and NGOs denigrated or banned.
The film shows how difficult it is in Russia to take the streets. There, any form of protest can be punished with long prison sentences. Members of the opposition risk their lives, and a dozen of them have been actively poisoned. Alexei Navalny is only the latest name in an ever-growing list. When he surprised everyone by returning to Moscow after treatment at a hospital in Berlin, Olga Romanova was one of those who tried to go to the airport to meet him. She also went to one of the demonstrations Navalny called for, a decision that would have serious consequences...
The Russian regime promotes the idea that foreign agents feed Western Russophobia, and that Navalny, his supporters, NGOs, and journalists are all complicit in this. But Navalny and his supporters, as well as dissidents both inside and outside Russia, tell a different story. They describe President Putin’s regime as a kleptocracy.
[Editor's Note: On 16 February 2024, Russian officials announced that opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in prison. Navalny, one of the most prominent critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had been serving a prison sentence since 2021. In late December 2023, he was transferred to a remote Arctic penal colony.]

Finally someone made a good documentary explaining inside things going in Russia. I had to leave the country because of opposing the war, I was making graffitis in my city at nights with anti war rhetorics. For you to understand, they got painted over in like hours! Anyway, what was kinda sad that people abroad don’t understand government and police oppression in Russia, asking why they’ve never heard of big opposition of war and Putin. And I had to explain every time that opposition is either jailed, killed or outside the country or scared and being quiet inside. Now I can just show this video instead, thanks! And peace!

I lived in Russia for 10 years and would like to give my testimony: There is much more simple people that just died or got in prision for much less. My neighboor was killed because of politics and nobody know her. Another friend of mine went to jail because he was in protests. Navalny is just one more famous. A LOT of people go to jail in Russia for much less. In cities where the opposition win elections, the federal government just dont repass the money. The city become a ruin until people decides to vote for Putin. If something goes wrong, they just cut the money. In pandemics you where allowed to vote at distance. I saw with my eyes people voting 2 times. I´m happy i left that place after all

"I'd like to teach my son about courage". That is the most essential part of this video and it's not just applicable to Russia. The elites in Russia enable Putin and countries in the west aren't far from the same fate. Too many people without courage and too many elites being granted power.

The elites? The people of Russia enable Putin to do what he’s doing. The people. Because taxes, because support and elections, because drafted people who agree to go and fight for him. The main problem is with the people. Not even with Putin.
@pauliewalnuts240
@pauliewalnuts240 6 ай бұрын
Have to agree with the gentlemen above Me. Putin eliminates "elites" that dont toe the line. He doesn't need them, putin lets them enrich themselves if they support the state narrative. As long as putin can pacify the people to become unknowingly subservient, or outright supportive, hes safely in power. I dont buy the global elite theory. Rich people have some power, but heads of state have support from the government, military, and police aslong as the people support them.

@@Hartleymolly For your sister in law this video is probably not news if we talk about the majority of people in russia. Most don't look for alternative news sources and if they stumble upon one they don't understand it. Speaking foreign language in a serious manner or loudly doesn't make other understand it. Heck, reading subtitles is even too much for the masses, convenience is seriously underrated here. So when we talk about delivering viewpoints, russia kick everybody's ass, where it's critical. Sadly Europe hasn't realized it in last 30+ years. 'The ones who look for info, will find it' attitude is deeply embedded in most of the countries. In post soviet countries this 'attitude' is subconsciously fueled by hate towards russians, historically. Ironically we willingly play along with "us and them" mentality more then we'd like to think.

I may not support Hamas but someone has the right to think and feel that way even if I don't, that inalienable right has just been made illegal in Europe. Most Russian people really like Russian politicians, the social order in Russia and comfortable life in Russia. And 90% of Russians also like Putin very much and always vote for Putin. I hear these conversations every day, and I have never seen the opposition. Maybe there are oppositionists somewhere, but I have never seen them in real life. This film is an absolute lie.

Dmitry activist is Dmitry Novikov, you can google this guy
@dannydetonator
@dannydetonator 5 ай бұрын
Dmitry Novikov was the leader of the National Democrats in Kazan. He spent 10 years in Russian detention facilities, where he was subjected to physical and psychological torture. Threatened with a return to prison, he decided to flee the country and found his way to Lithuania. Novikov started his activism in 2008 when Kazan’s National Democrats “were among the first to say that Vladimir Putin and his officials are the main enemies of Russia”. “We simply criticised the authorities and held rallies,” Novikov told LRT Novosti. “For this, we were accused of engaging in terrorism aimed at overthrowing the system.” At the beginning of 2010, Russian officials came to Novikov’s house with a search warrant. The activist was taken to the Centre for Countering Extremism, where he was instructed to act as a government agent if he wanted to avoid a prison sentence. “Naturally, I refused. […] I was sentenced to three and a half years in prison,” the man said. Dmitry Novikov / E.Blaževič/LRT Later, his prison sentence was extended as he was accused of founding an extremist community and instructing it to set fire to the Tatar Public Centre. “As it turned out, the Centre itself did not know anything about this alleged arson,” Novikov said, adding that charges brought against him were falsified. Novikov spent over two years at the correctional colony No. 3 in Russia’s Vladimir region, where Alexei Navalny is currently serving time. “There is a psychiatric hospital, where torture and punitive psychiatry is being used,” the man said. “They torture the most odious oppositionists there.” Penal colony in Vladimir region where Alexei Navalny is serving time / Vida Press Asked about methods of torture, Novikov mentioned beatings and dubious injections. After an injection, “you see everything in black and white, you do not understand what is going on”, he said. According to Novikov, he survived Russian prison thanks to his strong conviction in what he was doing and his belief “that all this was not in vain”. Novikov had to be released in 2017, but his sentence was extended again. “A week before my release, I was taken to a pre-trial detention centre. I was arrested again for propaganda and extremism on the Internet. I was accused of reposting some statements, which I did not do,” he said. President Vladimir Putin at May 9 event in Moscow / AP The man was finally released in December 2019. Not long after that, he was forced to leave Russia. “When I left prison, I did not calm down and continued my activities. Soon, my acquaintances told me that [Russian officials] were again interested in me,” the activist said. “I decided not to wait, packed my things, and on October 23 last year, I hitchhiked to Ukraine to ask for asylum there,” he added. But Novikov was denied asylum in Ukraine. “I was placed in a temporary detention centre for foreigners. There, I met a person who told me to think about the Baltic countries. I didn't have much choice,” he said. “I got to Kyiv, my friend was waiting for me there, and we went through Belarusian swamps to Lithuania,” the activist added. Novikov has requested asylum in Lithuania. Here, i did it for you. He's wellcome and settling in Lithuania now, away from fascist zombies, unfortunately not away from genocidal fascist bots still persecuting him like you.
