I'm big fan of a lot of animated "kid shows" like Amphibia, Steven Universe and most importantly Ninjago, and the thing that people forget is that this kid shows have great narrative, lore, characters and cover universal themes, like SU that covers themes like grief, trauma and rebellion, Ninjago covers corruption, trauma, death and treasome and Amphibia covers change, toxic relationships, autism and identity and that's just to mention a couple of kid shows. It's not about if it's a kids show or not, it's the fact that the shows have a really good story with fantastic characters and worlds.

Yeah. As much as people like to deny it this show is meant for kids and to sell toys to those kids. "Dark themes!!!" Yeah no darker tones is common in kids movies and shows. Just because a character dies (and in Ninjago's case nobody actually dies) doesn't mean it's a highly sophisticated adult 18+ show. The show is meant for kids it's just a fact but that doesn't stop the show from being well written.

I can’t believe I’m about to say this. But uh, I never even realized how DARK, Ninjago actually really is until someone pointed it out 😂🤦🏼‍♀️😭. But yeah! Almost every single past villains have died, along with some of our ninja too. There’s also a lot of possession and betrayal in this show. So much to the point where you start questioning yourself if it’s even a kids show like it used to be. But yeah! Idc if it’s a kids show and it’s dark. All it matters is that it’s written so well. Agreed- and honestly I think it’s kind of a special art form to write something meaningful even despite the limitations of having to cater to kids. It sometimes makes things much more interpretive, implied, or beautiful/subtle in a sense when kids, teens, and adults alike see how the themes of Ninjago are carried through its story. Another thing about this that absolutely bothers me is people complaining about things in Ninjago being “childish”. Even if you don’t like something(I.e. explorer’s club), calling it childish is frankly not a valid or valuable criticism when criticizing Ninjago. Perhaps it doesn’t appeal to specific people or specific reasons, but the sole reason of something being “childish” in Ninjago should not be something that is a direct fault of the show(because that is literally its intention). Basically, maturity =/= good writing.

I’m in high school and I enjoy just a few hobbies that won’t (typically) be made fun of by the average high school student (Some being working out, playing/listening to music, and just playing video games). Unfortunately, another hobby of mine is looked down upon by people my age. Building legos. I used to watch ninjago all the time when I was younger and I have always wanted a lego collection of all the figures/sets. But apparently legos are only for kids. It’s literally just a model you stick on your shelf! I don’t play with them, I just think they look cool! I feel like an idiot buying legos in stores now since I have obviously grown since 2016 when I was able to enjoy the feelingly buying a new ninjago set and not be embarrassed. Now I am kinda saying this because I saw someone from my school I had in one of my classes that used to talk to me at target with a lego set today. At this point I might just be done with buying legos In stores because it’s seen as childish and I need to grow out of it. All I want to do is try and fulfill my childhood dream of having such a large lego collection.

The WRITING is what determines a show better. Compare shows like Ninjago, My Little Pony (2010), Gravity Falls, and Bluey to shows like Peppa Pig and Super Why, and you feel the difference. One type feels aimed at entertaining kids / teaching them lessons, and the other type feels like it aims to include all ages with good writing. A kids show can be written well for all ages, or it can be aimed specifically just at young kids. The first kind is better.

Of course there are many chidlish moments and that's normal. Ok the video isn't out yet but I'm kinda annoyed. Kids aren't as innocent anymore as you think (especially the ones in my school) stuff happens we can't act like it doesn't just so kids can be happy (and stupid) bc when someone close to them DOES die or when they go through something similar they will be unprepared and it'll hit even harder. Kids grow up eventually adults aren't the only people on this planet. Srsly I'd rather grow up with ninjago than those disney sitcoms where nothing bad ever happens to the protagonist. I also think that mental disorders and trauma and stuff like that is basically non-existent for kids which I mean I guess is a good thing to some extent. I had no idea what autism was until 4th grade and in 2th grade there was an autistic kid in my class that a lot of people bullied bc they thought he was weird. I know autism isn't as un child-friendly as trauma and stuff but it's stll something people don't bother educating kids about until they find out for themselves or encounter a person like that. I will admit tho, some of the Llorumi scenes aren't exactly the best thing for Little Timmy to be watching

Season 8-10 had a dark atmosphere that was definitely aiming for higher age group. However season 11 just threw that out the window. They are trying to revive the dark tone with Crystallized, but due to the damage Season 11 did, I can’t say it’s not meant for kids

Something I think we all should do is define what is a kids show. Like Avatar is considered a kid show but it deals with things like genocide and aang finding Monk Gyatso skeleton corpse . I say that’s not for kids. Invaders Zim is a kids show yet that show has children getting their eyeballs ripped out, One of the main characters getting tortured throughout his entire childhood and suffering lost teeth and limb and needing an oxygen tank. The creator was also the one who wrote a comic called “ Johnny the homicidal maniac“ and wanted to kill characters multiple times but Nickelodeon fight with him for it. I wouldn’t consider either of these shows kid shows but if you insist that they are kids just because they appeared on kids network then Ninjago is definitely a kid show

I don't watch ninjago (although I did watch the first 4 seasons when I was younger but I felt it kinda fell off after that) I agree that kid shows can explore mature themes. Look at Avatar the Last Airbender, that show does target children yet it has some of the most adult themes and acts more mature then a lot of modern teen/adult media, even covering war, trauma, revenge, oppression, genocide, loss, death, and various other things

Fun fact: Zane getting the crap beaten out of him is actually more disturbing to me both now and when I was the target demographic than actual blood and gore though I know it's different from person to person. Further reason why trigger and content warnings in a show description work better than kids show restrictions. Fr ya'll give Zane a day off. Let him be relevant in a way that isn't the villian taking out the powerhouse first or trying to dismember him to steal his parts or trying to use him as a battery.

This discussion comes up a lot when discussing Avatar The Last Airbender. Avatar is a kids show. But that doesn't make it any less valid or good. In fact, Avatar The Last Airbender is my FAVORITE show of all time! Just because a show had dark themes doesn't make it any less for kids. Avatar is very dark when you look at it. Avatar explores abuse, existential crises, family issues, etc etc. Lots of dark themes. But it is still a kids show. "Kids show" doesn't make something immature. You can go as far to say that kid shows should strive to be a bit more mature Everything I said applies to Ninjago too

Ninjago was made for kids at the beggining, and it grew up along with its audience most of the time. Yes s11-12 were much more childish but those were exceptions.

Yes, Ninjago is for all ages not only children, but Ninjago is not an innocent little kid’s show like nursery rhymes, so it’s not a big deal to have a little violent since it’s an action genre. Plus, too innocent shows are boring. The show should have some dark, violent, dramatic scene so the audience will feel the emotion while watching the show.

The 3DS version was. The N64 original was E for everyone. Even then, a T translates to a 12 in the UK, so I'd say thats still for kids

See the thing people dont understand is, it IS a kids show but that doesn’t mean its mature. I mean look at it like this, lego ninjago is a series created by the company lego, and is about 4 (later 6) ninja who try to stop a villain trying to take over ninjago. First off, their ninja. Ninja are based of japan, and their deadly because of their skills in stealth and skill, sure you can make it more kids friendly but i have other evidence. Second, they have powers. Ok i get it, its like every kids show has a power or something, but i mean like, look at the names and there usage. Third, if it was completely a kids show, then 1. Some older audience may not enjoy it, and 2. It would just be some animated power rangers.

yes. probably a kids show. LIKE PROBABLY 2 girls kissing 1 boy, trying to kill your boyfriend then 8 seasons later the boy hugging the girl while FALLING FROM A FLYING TEMPLE then the girl falls top of the boy, boy shoves/pushes the girl for dozen times etc etc. but my 5 year old cousin watches it anyways lol but season 1/2 was really childish

Lego Ninjago is a kids show. Don't be upset at people saying that, be upset at people who say you can't watch it BECAUSE it's a kids show. Also, in my opinion, kids shows can be and often are shows that kids can watch, not that adults can't watch. Kids shows can still be good and cover mature topics as long as it's not too brutal and still allows for a young audience.
