I think the comments re speculation on the next conclave are very valid as there are currently 140 electors and most do not know much about any of their colleagues, especially those who live in Asia, the pacific and africa. They hardly ever meet and should a conclave be called very suddenly, they would have just 2 weeks in Rome for pre conclave meetings to try and assess who would be the 267th successor. No time once in the Sistine chapel and having to write the name of the person you believe to be the Successor of Peter. A young cardinal or an old one. a Curia man or a pastoral man. An italian or european or an asian or an African. And how holy is the man you want. So many questions. There needs to be be at least 3 weeks in Rome for all cardinals before the conclave in which they can meet, chat, share and question what is needed in the Church of this century and who is best to take the seat of Peter. Huge challenge.

John Allen reports on the anonymous Vatican employee complaint about the gay Lobby in the Curia, and then he reports that the jubilee ad for an LGBTQ+ has been at least temporarily removed from the Vatican Web Site. He does not co-relate these stories; but he might as well do so, given his closing report on the (Peronist) style of this papacy to send mixed signals to off-balance all opposition.

I watched the visit to Corsica. At the end of the day, the pope had difficulty to breath and speak, something that was not visible at the beginning of his visit. The man is 88.

On the issue of speculating the papbile: The people who say we shouldn't speculate on who would be the next pope are hypocrites. Those same people would speculate about who the next secular leader will be after any important decision without batting an eye, but once the issue of the speculating on the succession of the pope (when the pope is alive), then it's unbecoming and should not happen when the pontiff is alive.

The pope must be a priest and since priests cannot be married …. They could invoke a precedent: as the legitimacy of the papacy is based on the succession of Peter and Peter was a married man, it would be rather easy to defend a married pope. :)

Conjecture about candidates is inevitable and necessary, especially when done with charity and respect. The respect has already been earned by a life of service to the Kingdom. The actual electors can use all the help they get because, with few exceptions among the longer serving, the cardinals have only small amounts of direct personal contact.

Yes…could a large group of Latin traditionalists have a pilgrimage in the Jubilee year or those 20-30 or white Frenchmen, or 70+ Spaniards or intellectual Austrians over 40 or Men who work in tech industries or women who work in supermarket check out counters? Just what is a pilgrimage group and what makes it different to just CATHOLICS, MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES making a pilgrimage. Could be from any state but why make divisions of gender or sexuality so obvious? Just a thought.

@@joserodriguez5211 Thank you. Couldn’t agree more. I hope John will take the time to develop a profile for the new pope, as if he were a cardinal of the church. What will the “average” cardinal look for? Francis cleaned up the church finances and while that’s not exactly the thing you look for in a pope as a run of the milll Catholic, I was told this was critically important to the church. He created cardinals in places where the church is growing and not in places where the church has been in decline for almost 80 years or more. You can hardly blame him for that. Every CEO worth his salt promotes people who deliver results. He reaches out to the non believers. Against, it’s hard to find fault in that if you declare your faith in the apostolic church every Sunday. I hope the next pope will be a bit more doctrinally sound or careful with words so the Vatican officials don’t have to scramble after unscripted press moments to “clarify” what the pope intended to say. I hope the next pope is less conflicted in accepting the advantages his role as head of state give him.

If that is true, that the Holy Spirit chooses the Pope, He sure made a mistake this last time. In truth, it is men with political maneuvering and flawed wills that choose the pope who is essentially a Vatican insider. Nothing mystical about it. God deals with it, to be sure, and works through him, to be sure. He's been working overtime these past 10 years.

My guess and it is just that, a guess, is that Francis will retired at age 90. The cardinals will then elect either Cardinal Parolin or Cardinal Tagle as the next pope. Both of these men are extremely intelligent, know church history and are fluent in many languages. They are also young enough to lead the church for the next twenty years.

That's what the Chruch doesn't want, a pope that will last for more than 15 years. Plus, Parolin and Tagle are both very liberal and wouldn't unite the church.
